I played this game to death. Love it. Some additional hints/feedback: Your info about what you earn isn't exactly correct. The 10-3 doesn't cost you 10. It costs 13 because 1 time is exactly 1 money in this game. Calculate it always like thatI The 7x7 is only important at a very high level. First learn the two phases of the game: 1. Generate optimal income early 2 Switch to filling the board as effective as possible Generating income is paying as little money for the buttons that are on the patch. Prevent buying pieces without buttons as much as possible in phase 1. The 0 3 piece is clearly best. It costs 3 and has 1 button. But the 7 6 can also be a great opening piece because you pay 13 money for 3 buttons that's average 4,33 per button. The lowest in the entire game after the 0-3! But if you get it a bit later, let's say after the 3rd payment you will miss out on 3 payments which is 9 so these 3 button pieces lose value quick. Another example: The 7 4 with 2 buttons is 5,5 money per button and that's just worse than most pieces with buttons on them so in general I avoid this piece in the income phase unless no better options are available. Filling the board is the second phase and usually means buying stuff with 1 or 2 time steps as much as possible. The key is to switch from income generation to efficient filling as late as possible. Of course it depends what pieces have been bought already, but a general rule of thumb is per 1 time you can fill 2 squares during the filling phase. So if you have 30 time and 50 empty squares you should still focus on income, as you are in the income phase. But with 20 time remaining and 40 empty squares you should switch to filling or you will end up with lots of minus points for empty squares. When I started playing on boardgamearena I focused on this principle, learning when to switch and made it to 500 elo (expert level) without practically ever getting the 7x7. It's easily possible to run away with 30-40 points difference against people that don't understand this well. I just played a little tournament with 15 participants that weren't very good, but not terrible either. I won all 14 games and averaged 35 points win margin per game (502 point win margin over all games). Yes, I probably got the 7x7 in most of those games too, I don't remember. Just saying that more than 80% of the point difference I made came from buying the correct pieces, not by puzzling the 7x7 as fast as possible. If you want to become master level on boardgamearena (700+ elo) you should start to focus on the 7x7. But the 1x1 patches are maybe even more crucial as getting them all 5 means getting 10 points that your opponent didn't. A 20 point swing, even more than 14 points. Positioning on the time track is very important to get those. But that's a topic on itself. Good video otherwise, plenty helpful stuff in there to get to the 300-500 "strong" player range on BGA. Maybe reviewing some games between high and low rated players would make it more easily understandable. Why do they make what move? Can we identify clear mistakes?

We're looking into partnering with BGA to have a designated WSBG training zone, but the best way is to come and try your skills. Our winner this year (Malinda) only purchased a single ring entry to Splendor and ended up winning the Ring, so anyone can go on a run! You can also check out our website for upcoming conventions with official WSBG events/tournaments. Hope to see you in September :)

I've watched a few Wingspan videos and I'm not fluent in nerdspeak and need a translator. Everyone speaks about an engine like you're supposed to know what the fuck that is. I guess if you've grown up in your mom's basement playing dnd your whole life you know what that is. Can I get a non virgin translation?
@espio1653Ай бұрын
I can sympathize with where you're coming from but there's no need to be so rude about it. Terms like "engine" are extremely common in games as a whole. There's nothing "virgin" about it, it's just a helpful shorthand. In the context of Wingspan, your engine means a row of birds with strong brown powers that you intend to get numerous activations of over the course of the game. For example, a "tuck engine" is typically a row of birds on the bottom "Draw Bird Cards" row that have powers involving tucking cards from your hand to generate points. It is usually wise to focus on one or maybe two strong engine rows, rather than having a weaker engine in all three rows.
@goodtelly631419 күн бұрын
I’m super new to gaming, like just started this week, but for me the word engine means something that you put in place in a game and once it’s added it becomes an “engine” that just repeats itself over and over. Like pistons in a motor, once they get added into the engine, all they do is go back and forth for forever but that single action is powerful enough to propel cars around the world. So an engine in Wingspan is something that is put in place (a card) with an instruction that’s gonna get repeated over and over all game. The more powerful the engine, the more it produces each time. Since Wingspan is all about getting points, you want to add engines/cards that crank out points. Wingspan is about finding the best combinations that generates the most points.

Tips 5 is a bit off, the level 1 card which require 2-1 is crucial to build your level 3 card, however the level 2 card 2-3-3 or 2-2-3 with 1 point is literally trash, cost a lot of resource with only 1 point.

Thanks for the tips! Everyone is saying how important to get up two steps on the Conservation track, but no one says which of the choices is better! Sure, you could say "it depends", but isn't there one of them that is usually better?! I would think it's getting one more association worker?
@Jonatan-y6m3 ай бұрын
Great question! It is almost always correct to go for the card upgrade. Some of the top players will at times go for the worker when the break is expected to last a bit longer and it is crucial to take snapping as the reward. But such cases are rare and difficult to determine, so the safest bet is to go for the upgrade. However, it is important to try different approaches for the sake of learning. Hopefully this provides some clarity. (For reference, this is coming from someone with hundreds and hundreds of games played on board game arena with a 75% win rate and who frequently watches high level gameplay)

I have a bad feeling for the new map, too dependent on early project, too luck base for tournament
@Lightningdude3 ай бұрын
Why would they change attacking cards ?
@alexchen10063 ай бұрын
This map should fix the problems of racing uni in 4players game because you no longer need 2uni for an upgrade. Also, snapping is nerfed in this map. Although you can discard a card to boost 1strength, it is kinda not worth.
@goldsmeeth27713 ай бұрын
But the players who can get fast projects gets too much advantage. The double uni was what allow you in the game if you didn't get the right cards early
@markvanderwerf85924 ай бұрын
A card upgrade per uni and partner zoo and the reputation on extra worker seems interesting. Really kinda favours getting an extra worker early as for example partner zoo/uni into project + worker and then zoo/uni should easily enable 3 upgrades early. And then you can do uni + zoo again next round (typically the downside of early worker is other player rushing the round or not having a project to do but being incentivized to do partner zoo and uni at same time benefits that). The discard for power ability also seems interesting might make the whole thing just stronger than snapping especially as this map seems to give a lot of reputation midgame with that 3 rep reward and two from workers. Seems like it will be pretty common to get effectively 4 rep (3 from bonus which gives extra worker). Not sure if i like the map that way, could be a bit snowbally. Many openings could easily use that 3 rep for a second worker early but way better as you also kinda get snapping power that way. Without snapping reward reputation already gets far more important.

I think it's so interesting how in tournament play, reserved cards are face down so other players I suppose have to remember what cards their opponents reserved. In our family games, we handle reserved cards by having them turned sideways so we know they aren't in play yet. The only time we keep them face down is if we reserve a card from the deck vs. one of the ones on display in game. Do the rules specify it should be done one way or the other? Edit: Commentator addresses this at about the 25:00 marker. That's interesting that in tournaments, once a card is reserved it stays face down until purchased so it's incumbent on rival players to mentally track all of that. I'm not a big fan of that tournament rule if that is standard practice. The other thing that bugs me is how they stack their chips. I think they should be at least a little staggered like the top left player demonstrates his hand at 19:35 so players can track how many gems opponents have on hand and of what colors. I similarly think that bit is "public knowledge" that shouldn't be hidden in any way.
@WSBGofficial4 ай бұрын
It is standard to keep the cards face down, that is in the rulebook :)
@raoulduke28204 ай бұрын
Reguarding @ 6:40, one thing I learned is going for the color that will interact with the most nobles is a mistake because there will be a lot more competition for those, especially among the players that are going for the nobles. Doing the opposite and ramping up a color that only 1 or 2 nobles need will leave those cards mostly free game for you.

@jeremyrioux4 ай бұрын
To reply to tip number 2, if you have extra bird cards at the end of the game, is that also seen as a waste and not efficient?
@JohnCollinsIsAWizard5 күн бұрын
generally yes, I think so. there are of course edge cases like choosing the Visionary Leader bonus card or seeing "Cards in Hand" as the final-round goal (a round goal introduced in one of the expansions, I believe). but the chief benefit of building out the wetlands is, of course, that you see more cards & can hopefully use all that information to play your best birds rather than just settling for what's in your hand. sometimes you just can't draw a decent card to save your life. at some point, it's better to cut your losses & pivot to laying eggs at the end, but knowing when it's that time is super situational. I would say that ending with a hand full of mediocre cards is less a testament to wasted inefficiency and more a testament to bad luck.
