Very thorough review. One thing to add about the two Shimano shoes: The RC903 Boas are hard plastic while the RC703 Boas have a rubberized edge which in my opinion makes them easier to grip.

Well, Steve, I have promptly watched your SRAM Force and Red reviews- I am going mostly with the Red because it’s a new bike build, so why not?? I have a follow-up question though. My mechanic suggested.an XPLR rear derailleur, and when I mentioned simply getting a SRAM Red AXS for the Soloist (it’s a road bike set up, after all), he seemed pretty committed to the XPLR . I am forgetting the exact reasons he gave me, except that you could potentially put a bigger cassette with the XPLR… But I think I may never need a bigger cassette. On my current Cervelo Aspero set up (in the semi-road mode), I only use the bottom 10 to 15t cogs, the way I ride, so I cannot imagine when and why I would ever want to have a 44t cassette (I don’t like climbing and essentially, I never climb. It’s all going all out on the flats and speed for me). So, if you are so kind, could you please give me the reasons (or a distinct advantage) of purchasing a SRAM XPLR derailer VS SRAM Red AXS (where I have an awesome deal now)??? Conversely, if I insisted on SRAM Red AXS, wouldn’t it be a mistake on my part?? Thank you! I think the main reason he said XPLR was that a lot of guys in the local cycling community have their brains framed around the gravel cycling concepts- I literally live in the “ gravel capital” of the United States, but I am a road cycling guy through and through. That’s why even my Aspero is set up as a road bike now, and I got to ride some awesome paved trails in the PNW over the summer, and I never even thought about getting my gravel wheelset back on, until now in almost in December…. Anyway, to recap my story/question, is it worth to go with the XPLR derailer for a Cervélo Soloist, on which I think I would like to have a 33T cassette?

Beyond all the reasons you explained why you wouldn't want one, the XPLR is a 1x groupset and only goes on bikes that are UDH (universal derailleur hanger) compatible. The Soloist is not. The Aspero is; your mechanic may have thought you were referring to that bike. If not, time to find a new mechanic.😀

@@intheknowcycling Wow, that has been a crash course in Biking 101 for me! I have now spent x xumber of hours googling up everything there is about XPLR, UDH, and the Soloist frame. You Seem to be correct, once again. The Soloist Does not seem to be UDH Compatible. In fairness, the Soloist I am building WILL Indeed be a 1x! (Personal necessity) So, the mechanic talked about XPLR In the context of that being the major “1x Only” Option… But yes, he was talking about the Soloist… So, SRAM Red AXS E1 Is the way to go! As a side note, it’s funny how 90% of Nate’s talk about the new RED AXS was in terms of brake levers, and this is the only area I thought I could cheapen out and go with FORCE… so, I I felt bummed after watching this video, and decided to upgrade to SRAM Red brakes as well. I am now debating whether the new E1 is worth the extra $280 that I would have to pay over the great clearance(!!!) deals that I already found on the SRAM Red AXS brakes-previous iteration… the question is literally, should I cancel my order that I just placed last night fore “regular” Red AXS brakes and shoot for the E1 version or is it not really going to make a world of difference, like many KZbin reviews claim??? Thanks! P.S. And no, my name is not Jonas or Tadej 🙂 I am very likely, not even Nate from your videos!! I just like the new stuff and thinking that if I go one-or half the level- down now, I’m going to regret it immediately, especially since this technology is here to stay for the next five years (we hope)… It’s like buying a car in mid-level trim, and immediately wishing you had gotten the top trim.

hi. Great review. I own a Prince 2019 Disk with mechanical Ultegra and factory wheels (fulcrum wheels); I used to live in Miami when I bought this bike and it was great for flats - but now I live in a hilly region and am struggling to keep up with others going on steep climbs. (gear ratio is 50:34, 11:28); I'm now considering selling my Prince and upgrading to the new Madone SL7 Gen 8. nicer wheels, DI2 and better gear ratio (50;34, 11;34). let me know your thoughts?
@intheknowcycling
@intheknowcycling 9 күн бұрын
That'd be a nice upgrade, but the Madone isn't a particularly light bike. Depending on how "hilly" it is where you live now, if you still like your Prince, you might try training a bit for the hills, getting some lighter wheels, and getting a long cage derailleur and 11/34 cassette (in that order) before buying a new bike.

@@conradopetrov8137 Sounds like you want a new bike. That's cool. Great review and well-deserved like! A question about sizing here. How tall is Miles and what size frame is it? Asking for the reference point for myself. I appreciate that you filmed this video with Miles standing behind the bike and holding it vertically. So we can see the distance between the top tube and his jewels.:) I’m looking into getting the Soloist myself now, and I think I’d like to shoot for the same type of stand over height for me… I am 5’7” tall and currently have the Cervelo Aspero in size 51 - it is a good fit, except I keep wishing I had narrower handlebars, a 10 mm longer stem, and the 165 mm cranks on it… Which may be pointing that I’m ready for frame altogether! When I compared the geometry for the 51 Aspero vs.b51 Soloist, I was quite a bit worried about the 16 mm difference in stand over height, with the Soloist being taller somehow. My.LBS that is going to do the build for me suggested that I go with size 48 frame…. At first, I thought that would be way way too small for me, but seeing many great riders opting for the smaller size frames, I’m trying to make up my mind whether or not I will be OK with the 48 size frame, especially considering that the stem on my 51 cm Aspero is completely slammed now, and I have NO issues whatsoever getting in the lower position and in fact often find myself _wanting_ to go EVEN lower and trying to do it subconsciously when I ride. What are your thoughts about the 48 cm Soloist for a guy who is 5‘7“ tall, with about 29 inch inseam; comfortable with the 51 cm ASPERO but seemingly ready to experiment with the smaller size frame (OR components), and rides about 16 hours a week on average, just like Miles? Any insight will be much appreciated!
@intheknowcycling
@intheknowcycling 16 күн бұрын
Miles is 5' 10". He's on a 54 Soloist and is very flexible. I'd suggest you focus on stack and reach rather than stand over height. I'm also 5' 10" and just finished reviewing a 56 Aspero with Nate who is 5' 11 and Conor who is 6'. The bike seemed a bit stretched out for us so maybe a 54 would have been better.
@akmola1
@akmola1 16 күн бұрын
@@intheknowcycling thank you for the response, sir! Much appreciated. I have not watched your review of the Aspero. It is a bit shocking that someone who is 6 feet tall - a good 5 inches taller than I am - would feel more comfortable on 54 frame (while the Cervelo website suggest they should be firmly in the 58 cm range)… This is also an affirmation, I guess, that if I go two sizes down from the suggested frame size., I should be OK with the 48 Soloist, especially if other indicators are also pointing in that direction (wanting narrower handlebars, smaller 165 mm cranks, and longer stem on the 51 Aspero).
@intheknowcycling
@intheknowcycling 16 күн бұрын
@@akmola1 You may have misinterpreted my message or perhaps I misinterpreted yours. Miles at 5'10" and rides a 54 Soloist. Conor at 6', and I at 5'10" rode a 56 Aspero. I urge you to measure your stack and reach to decide on your frame size. You can specify your handlebar width and stem length (Miles specified 37cm bars and 110cm stem) and cranks (I use 165mm) on any frame. You may be justifying going to a smaller size frame based on things irrelevant to frame size choice. Size the frame first based on the right factors (stack and reach, not standover height) and spec the components next. If the combo you want doesn't come stock, buy the frame (see snp.link/4a80960d) and components separately and have them built up. Better to do that than compromise frame or components. Unless you've got very short legs, I wouldn't think a 48 would be right for your height.
@akmola1
@akmola1 6 күн бұрын
@@intheknowcycling thank you for imparting your words of wisdom on me, sir! Over the past week, I have had a chance to analyze the information about the Soloist geometry in these two sizes, and I have come to the conclusion that I am firmly within size 51 range for both the Aspero and the Soloist- this is also what my bike fitter said who did the fit for me on the Aspero,.. the stack of of the Soloist is actually 15mm lower, which w will be ideal for me, and if I need to make any more tweaks, I will easily be able to make those with stem length and seat height. Part of the reason I came to this conclusion is by comparing the geometry of different brands in the same all-around race, bike category. What I discovered was that the Cervélo Soloist size 51 is identical (down to a millimeter across-the-board!!) to size 49 Tarmac SL8, and it would have been insane at my height to even think about looking at one size down, the 44 Tarmac. As for the standover height, I was overthinking it too much. To my surprise, I just discovered that my other bike. Canyon Roadlite, has a standover height of 770 mm in Size S. It is 22 mm higher than the claimed standover height of the Soloist that I will be building, and yet I have had no issues whatsoever operating the Canyon bike.. In any case, long-winded story, but thank you again for making me think twice. This is indeed very important before pulling a trigger and ordering a frameset online, only to discover that it does not fit you and having to mess with the whole completed bike build and return/exchange the frame. By the way,Cervélo pricing rocks! My Soloist build looks to be in the $6500 range, with 70/30 SRAM Red/SRAM Force components and carbon everything, except possibly the stem!!! (I do have a wheel set already that I plan to use with the new bike, though).

I recently ordered this bike in the Azure color and can't wait to get my hands on it, this video definitely helped me make the decision to pick the Soloist so thank you for the great review. I was also considering the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod with Ultegra but as Miles mentioned the stock wheelset on the Soloist is probably the best you can get on a bike that doesn't cost $10K+. The 2025 Ultegra Di2 model now comes with the 42/49 wheelset and a double sided power meter from 4iiii, usually you'll only see SRAM equipped bikes with power meters included so it's an amazing addition especially at this price point. Also I'm curious how they can sell the frameset for $2.700, it's heavier than many bikes out there now but at around 900 grams for a size 54 or 56cm it is certainly not a pig. We can only assume it's a lower quality carbon than the R5 and S5 frames but it still weighs less than the S5, no idea how they pulled that off but I'm glad they did. I'm sure Cervelo is making decent money off of the bike but clearly they are not as greedy as their competitors, really smart move on their part to spec the Soloist the way they have. We should probably expect to see more of these out on the road soon.

The originals were, I think, Knogs from the 2000’s and since then they have been shamelessly bootlegged so many times 😢 I’ve a set myself and they make great backup lights, I especially appreciate the solid clip on the rear for fixing to saddlebags or rucksacks. However, they are ‘dumb’ lights and as your vid demonstrates other lights have USPs, albeit at a substantial increase in price. My go to rear light is a Bontrager RT and Trek reckon that the flash pattern was scientifically developed to be more noticeable to the human eye.

Wheels, tubes and tyres make such a difference, if you're making a review based on how the bike compares to what you're riding usually, I'm not even sure I'd bother using the supplied tubes and tyres. My own bike, with the same wheels, whether I'm running 28C or 32C feels like an entirely different bike, so ride feel and stiffness mean virtually nothing unless you're using a given set of tyres, tubes and pressure. And for almost anyone buying any bike that's not high end ever, I'd probably always budget 120$ extra to put on gp5000 and TPU tubes. I wouldn't even ride the stock tyres so I can sell them as new on ebay.

We reviewed the stock bike in comparison to other stock bikes (Nate's Specialized Venge) and with stock wheels and tires we know from riding other bikes (we've previously ridden and reviewed the stock Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 wheels and Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite tires on several other bikes that our our daily drivers). To review the frame, we compared the effect of other wheels and tires we've also tested on other bikes (the Reserve and Black Inc wheels and the GP5000 S TR and Trek Aeolus RSL tires) and the groupsets we've tested on other bikes (the Ultegra 8100 that comes stock and the Sram Red AXS and Force AXS). It's not an exact science, but if you test enough of the components on different bikes, you can make a fair assessment of their individual and collective contribution to the performance of this bike. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the straight forward review. I do have a frustration with reviews of these products however. Seldom are the Garmin Connect eco-system or the extra safety measures built in to the Garmin units mentioned in the review. To my knowledge, only the Garmins have the ability to notify an emergency contact in the event of an incident (Incident Detection). For obvious reasons this alone is reason to go with Garmin. Garmin Connect allows for straight forward route creation and training session creation without the need for an extra subscription to another service. This is a big cost savings long term. Having said all of this, I have found numerous Edge units to be extremely buggy and frustrating. I live in an area with spotty cell service and this seems to be the source of a lot of issues. The live tracking mostly works, until it doesn't, which is more often than is optimal. Other issues seem to pop up when the software is updated. Last week my Edge 540 completely lost a ride, failed to track me and forgot the Varia radar. These were three problems in three consecutive rides, not all in one ride. That is one week of snafu's with no explanation from Garmin Support. My old Edge 520 Plus is by far my most reliable unit, which makes no sense since the 530 and 540 are used in the same manner. I would love to have a Wahoo that had incident detection and the built in eco system for routes and workouts. I have had these units and all of the advantages noted are correct, however all in all the overall value is still with Garmin, even with the aforementioned problems.

I want to see notifications when my family reaches out to me on Messenger, Whatsapp, Viber, or whatever else chat program. Wahoo does not cover that use case at all and it is almost a deal breaker for me. However, I'm surprised that you found the complexity of figuring out the UI on Garmin and Wahoo about the same. I consider the Wahoo UI to be very clear and well-designed, with Garmin being powerful but rather confusing.

I got an 840 for 20% off. After four rides I'm returning. It's way too complex, and I'm in a complex field in IT. It seems like every feature is turned on so it takes forever to turn it all off and I still couldn't do it. I'm just riding along and all of a sudden new screen and functionality shows up that I didn't ask for and don't want. Data fields stopped recording and it would disconnect from Di2. They really, really, want you to log in to social media and I assume they track your use of them and sell the data. Several times I wanted to smash it against the pavement it was so frustrating to use. It's really crazy that as long as Garmin has been in the bike computer business their screen is reflective in the sun. Also the touch screen has poor sensitivity. I had to swipe multiple times to get it to work. I can't wait to send it back. I will probably try the Wahoo, but my Apple Watch Ultra will suffice for now.

I recently purchased the Ravemen FR300. Really liked the features of the light. Unfortunately, I was unhappy with the way my Wahoo Roam V2 connected (on top of it). I tried a couple different adapters, but was unable to get a solid and trustworthy fit. I'm guessing the Garmin and Hammerhead fits are more secure.

Did you try attaching it to the Ravemen itself without an adapter? Specifically, unscrew the two screws on top, rotate the connector 90 degrees and screw them back in? That's what I do when I use the Ravemen with my Roam.

@@intheknowcycling "Adapters" was not the correct term in my post. I should have used "connectors". My units came with 4 connectors, a male and female for both Garmin and Wahoo. My Roam did not connect firmly enough, causing it to vibrate when going down the road, and I felt that a good size bump would jettison it. I contacted Ravemen and they just told me to go back to the retailer and ask for other connectors. My results were only slightly better.

@@MacGruberville Ah. Must be a prior design of the FR300. The one I got doesn't have separate Wahoo and Garmin connectors. There's just one on the bottom to connect to your out-front and another on the top to connect to your GPS. With each, there are 4 holes in both the connector and housing at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, two screws, and two slots in the connector to accept the GPS. I merely unscrewed the two screws, turned the connector so the slots lined up with the Wahoo or Garmin quarter turn orientation and screwed the connector back down. So it connects equally well with the Wahoo and Garmin or the Hammerhead I used in the video that had a Garmin adapter.

I have a multitude of lights in all directions; both flashing and solid.
