Great read! Finished it in two sittings a few days ago. It runs the gamut of emotions and is wickedly funny. From being a drunk in recovery myself (and a dude), it was refreshing to read about the hell of booze addiction from a female perspective. Nicely done.

Hey Sarah, I don't know if you read these comments or not, but I have to say that your depictions of yourself when you were drunk...I mean they represent some of the sexiest, most beautiful writing I've ever come across...until I read Caroline Knapp's "Drinking: A Love Story", and I had to do several double takes with some of the magnificent scenery in that one. That need to drink is just so ingrained in you, and other women like you, how could you shut it off completely? It just lays dormant inside of you, and you never know when it will rear it's head again. Now I'm not an alcoholic, I have no idea what constitutes good liquor or bad liquor or what have you, I tend to black out myself but that's due to some problems with sleep I have, but in the same way you said that you nearly salivated when you caught the whiff of a drunk homeless guy, if I were to send you a bottle or two, or if you see an ad for some beer or liquor, does that dormant part of you stir and make you do a double take, think about the good times you had, and what you had to sacrifice to stifle that need? It's just so beautiful to see craving displayed in such a raw form

SOIL is a beautifully constructed and imminently engrossing novel. HIGHLY recommended! I look forward to your next book.

I just read your book, for trying to understand why the alcoholic in my life does what they do, this gave me very good insight to what they are feeling. I learned its not about me BUT THEM and there feelings towards themselves. Your writing was so funny at times and flowed so freely. But the bottom line was the TRUTH and RAW pain you were going through, I so appreciated your honesty. I plan to send your book to this person I am worried about, I hope they read it and see that we all are in pain and there is HOPE. Thank you

I read your book about 4 months ago. Thank you for writing it, I really relate to a lot of it. I too love to drink. Five years coming up in a couple of days. And quite honestly I found a lot of things in your book that I could relate to.

Such a great story. ..'Didn't stop walking until he found a home'...Marvellous. Arthur now has a fantastic life with a family who love him. Bravo Arthur ! His story with Mikael & the rest of his Team Peak Performance colleagues is marvellous, & he has such a special bond with Mikael which is fantastic, but I also think that Mrs. Lindnord - Helena - deserves a great deal of credit too for giving him such a wonderful home life.

It's rather unfortunate that this interview makes the book sound pretty flat and boring. It's not. It's brilliant.

You have described the course of so many people's history of drinking, Very, very common scenario. Kinda sounds like binge drinking for the most part but whether that reached the depths of hard core alcoholism is not that clear. Do you consider yourself an alcoholic or just a reformed hard drinker?
@jenniferbenson85152 жыл бұрын
I hope you don't mind me answering this question. A binge drinker can be an alcoholic. Not all drink everyday. It's more about not being able to stop once you start, and becoming drunk, or say you will have one, and end up having way more. Normal drinkers do not drink to get get drunk.

If you drink alcohol in order to deal with your anxiety, low self confidence...etc., seek help. Same goes for other drugs.

Hope the recovery narrative is sharp as the retelling of the misbehavior that inspired it. Great prose style. Wry and ribald.
