Great video! I must say, my Leica M8 is incredibly slow-I have to wait until the red light stops blinking before taking the next shot. If I don’t, the camera shuts down, and I’m stuck waiting for minutes before it’s operational again. I also noticed that many of your images look more "washed out" compared to mine. I suppose that's a look some people prefer when using the M8. Personally, I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant tones of Kodachrome 25 ASA and Fuji Velvia in my film days, and I try to replicate that feeling. I find that the Hasselblad X1D and Hasselblad H4D often come closest to achieving the Velvia-like richness. I was particularly surprised when comparing the results from my Leica M8 with a Summicron 35mm lens to those from the Hasselblad X1D II with a 45mm lens. Despite one having just 10 megapixels and the other 50, the resulting images were remarkably similar-even under close scrutiny at the pixel level.

I’ve been a professional photographer since 1980 using 2 Nikon FM’s and an F3 and Nikon all the way through film and digital. The ZF is absolutely incredible! In this little fellow not much bigger than an FM you have a system camera that is as capable as the Nikon Z8 or even the flagship Z9! You have the ability to use it manually changing speeds with a manual dial or you can use the wheel dials as with non ‘retro’ models. So say the ergonomics are not good with larger lenses but fitted with a grip I can use my 400mm without even thinking about it left hand under the lens barrel right hand on the grip and shutter just like I did all those years ago with the FM’s! I absolutely love this little marvel of a camera especially when paired with Voigtlander lenses you get that ‘back to the future’ pleasure which affords my love of photography to flow. Sorry you didn’t like it but everyone to their own, but it is truly a professional camera because I make my living using it.

I shoot for some big name magazines and generally use film. But at times they need a next day turn around so I stick on the digital back. I use the old phase one ccd primarily as it looks closer to my analog work. CCD is by far a nicer sensor in my opinion. Yes it has its disadvantages but in the right environment and settings, it blows away cmos for texture depth and colour ❤❤

100% agree with your thoughts. The Zf felt cheap and flimsy to me when I held it, even compared to a more modern Nikon d700 (which is built like a tank). The reviews that say the build quality is good, apparently don't know what good build quality is anymore. I still might get one bc it's a good deal for more modern tech, but I would have paid more for all metal construction and better tactile buttons.

A most enjoyable camera, and a camera I came back to after having sold my original M8 some 11 years ago. I call the images it produces the sweet spot between analog and digital even with the advanced CMOS sensors of today. I agree the LCD screen doesn’t deliver a quality image but it does help me to check how well I framed my photo and if I need to I can adjust the angle. It’s also a good way to check your focusing after the shot and exposure. I’m am happy to have it back even if by today’s standards it is a klonker. At the end of the day it’s all about the quality of the image it produces. It’s a shame that Kodak is no longer making CCD sensors.

I had a Leica m240 and I sold it. I just bought a Nikon Zf with the money I got from m240. To be honest the image quality is better with Zf, Af works perfect plus it is also fun to use manual lenses. The PSAM mode selector I think better than Fuji's way. It is much quicker when you need to get another mode. I think you are not used to as you said.

So far,I’m loving the M8… and how this camera feels in my hands… I just want to hold it and go shoot frames… I’m also now thinking about selling my X100V and getting the XPro 2.. best of both worlds…. now where do I find a good 28mm for the M8…😊

I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these. I want to use it to shoot still life and portraits. I still have a Sunpak 522 that works perfectly, so I think that could be useful to shoot with, thankfully I have an 8' PC cord because I can't see holding the camera and the Sunpak. I used my dad's 500 long ago, that is my only experience with Hasselblad. I think that the main reason I want to get one of these is that it will force me to really concentrate on the shot. It's like putting the art back into the camera and not in the computer.

Totally agree with what you said that a photography should at least be able to use/shoot with a Leica once. Not own a Leica. Just have a go at it for the experience. Different strokes for different folks, they say. Because then you would know if Leica fits your style of shooting. I was able to get my hands on my first Leica M body last year, and while I can say -- after a considerable amount of rolls, and bringing it with me almost anywhere I go -- that the build quality and the rangefinder shooting experience is topnotch, they are still tools. And with my style of shooting as of the moment, there are just other tools that I gravitate towards more than my M4 or M6. :) Thank you for this video and for sharing your Leica journey.

Great narrative, thank you as always. I have Rollei 35, took few pictures this summer in Greece as well and just got me thinking. I think it the process of taking the picture that can contribute to shaping it.. and the photographer needs to enjoy this process to use such camera. I had my Leica Q3 as well, that is my first and only Leica. While it is a different beast, one can achieve any kind of results in post these days though. Still thinking if I should sell the Q, get this one and in case I need buy some 'boring' digital beast, should be enough budget after sale of Q 🙂 Need to sleep on it, or get some amazing advice ;-) Best and warmest regards, Filip

@f__e__e__l__e__e__p Thank you so much for your appreciation! 🥰 I think it depends on your personal needs: I still can't get the philosophy behind the Q, it seems too perfect to me. I do all my personal stuff with the M-D & M8, most of my paid work with the M-D & Canon R. The R is a "soulless" workhorse but delivers. For special occasions where image quality is essential, my gear of choice is the Fujifilm GFX 50S II. The M8 is more than enough for nearly everything, but you could get a 240 for the same price right now. It has the same sensor as the 262/M-D and the aesthetics are closer to the M8 than to the M10. If you're into Leica and love photography, I think both models would suit your needs. 😉 I don't know where you're from, but if you are somewhere in southern Germany, you're welcome to meet up and try out my Leicas! Best and lovely regards, Moe

Yes, I agree. Especially now that my main interest is street photography. I’ve been shooting for 20+ years but only started shooting street a little more than a year ago and it’s changed everything about how I think about taking a picture including what kind of camera I want to use. I have a Sony with all the lenses and bells and whistles of a “modern camera” but prefer my Ricoh GRIII….which isn’t reliable at all…I’m currently working feverishly towards my first Leica…probably an M typ 240 and a Voigtlander 28mm to start with

I’m left eye dominant and therefore my rangefinder experience will be different than anyone who’s right eye dominant. So I’m not even sure if a can use it well enough to justify the cost. ich schreib jetzt einfach mal in deutsch, weil ic vermute dass du auch ein Schwabe bist.... Ja echt geil was du sagst. No Hasselblad X-Pan and H cameras are not rebranded Fuji gear. X-Pan and H1 were collaborations between the two brands Fuji and Hasselblad gave the X-Pan body and lens, design and manufacturing to Nittoh japan. The H1 body is a Hasselblad development, lenses without shutter developed and manufactured by Fuji. The leaf shutters within the lenses are made by Hasselblad in Sweden. Fuji went out of this collaboration after the H1 but continued the lens manufacturing for H cameras. Hasselblad continued the H series alone (H2 to H6, A6) and created his own digital backs after buying the danish Imacon company (specialist in scanners, digital backs and imaging software).

I started my photo education with view cameras, Mamiya 6x7's, Yashicamat 124's, Bronicas and I must list, Hasselblads. I can understand why young photographers would find a "Blad" frustrating. Any camera has to be used and shot to where the controls become second nature. If the photographer struggles with the technology the same photographer has lost their vision. Hasselblads are or tend to be very specific tools of the trade. Commercial and studio work is what I use them for. Times when you are creating not recording, where everything is preconceived and is controlled. I have lusted for cameras for different reasons. I lusted for the Canon 1Ds in 2002 from the moment I put it to eye. I lusted for the Hasselblad for the undeniable image quality not its zippiness.
