Yes, we use planers with deep diving Rapala Magnums and Mirror lures. Both probably dive 20 to 30 feet. But I like the lure to bump the bottom, this will trigger strikes. Fishery great as close as 3 to 5 miles offshore about 20 to 30 feet deep. The fisheries even better up by Crystal River although it’s a long run to deeper water. Often the Gags will be caught really shallow (10-20 feet) as long as theres structure and food. If it gets too cold food becomes scarce and they will slide deeper. Water temperature from 60 to 70 ideal. If it gets below 60 bite can get tough…

Great video, Living in Tarpon Springs this is how we would often fish for gags, at times we used planers to get the bait down more. Found a many nice spots fishing this method. Mark the spot, check the bottom finder for structure, anchor up and fish frozen sardines to get scent and activity in the water. Catch a small gag or two then fire down a hand sized pin fish and hold on. Not many fish hit harder and fight harder the first few cranks than a 15 pound gag in 30 feet of water.

Nice video, I disagree with Captain. Goliath are not endangered, they are everywhere offshore where I live in Tarpon Springs. They need to be harvested as they have taken over most reefs and wrecks and eat anything that fishermen hook. Hope you guys are venting those small Reds seen some floaters in the video. Would really like to see some 20 plus pounds Gags. Those huge copper belly gags will pull a Red backwards. Gags are much more powerful and in my opinion better eating…

@luckystrikelivin
@luckystrikelivin Ай бұрын
Just a reminder! Assuming usually doesn't end up well. It is a 10 hour long day and we can only show so much. We are legally required to have a descending device on all our boats. Also, this fishery is our livelihood and we do our best to protect it. Every grouper that floats gets picked up and sent down on a descender.
@HeadedWestFishing
@HeadedWestFishing Ай бұрын
@ didn’t assume anything. you can clearly see it in your video of them floating off? You’re saying after you’re done fishing you pulled anchor and went to retrieve the floating fish and descend them down? lol they would of been dead by then but nice try. No harsh feelings but if you want to preserve our fishery try and preserve the lives of the small ones that’s all. 🤙
