Mcguigan, what a legend, what speed and stamina. One of my favourite 80s boxers.

Ive always thought their should be a retirement home 🏡 for boxers who have come upon hard times . Eg sadly matthew Saad Muhammad died on the streets. Randolph Turpin committed suicide. Chris Eubanks and frank bruno both have mental problems. Over a decade of recieving constant whacks to your head will take its toll. Some boxers need to be cared and looked after.

I was in the same class as Howard at Penydarren Primary school and all these years later still have three main memories of him. Age nine I went one and a half punches with a future world boxing champion. Pushing game turned to punching and Howard punched me. I punched him back, he punched me again and I fell over and started crying. Howard helped me up---friends again. Years later, at Swansea Uni, we had two brothers in the Engineering Dept who both played for Llanelly: one of whom also played for Wales. Wales were playing Scotland up at Murrayfield and Howard was fighting in Edinburgh the Friday night before. We asked the brother of the Welsh international player what he'd had to say about the game, which was the first he'd played at Murrayfield. Answer: very little. The Welsh team had been taken to the fight the Friday before the game and his brother, who'd just played in a winning Welsh rugby team only wanted to talk about Howard Winston and his left jab !! And a few years after that I emigrated to San Diego, Ca, and used to cross into Tijuana, Mexico to look around the shops and have lunch. Chatting to the Mexican shopkeepers, they couldn't find Wales on a map----but they'd all heard of Howard Winstone!! Having been on the end of a Winstone punch in school I've always remembered Howard as a tough kid from Penydarren High Street who grew up to be a World Boxing Champion,---and a gentleman.

My father use to tell me of the people who would take advantage of Winstone and never pay for any drinks, he became a drunk regularly having fights and losing to bigger men. Sad, great boxer

Looking at the links on Bomber's Wiki page, life didn't get any easier for him after this video. He ended up stacking shelves in Asda, and his girlfriend had terminal cancer.

I idolised Herol and went to see his fight against McCallum. He was my main inspiration to take up boxing. I got to meet my hero 13 years ago when I had a personal training session with him, in a small gymnasium in Muswell Hill. We talked about the McCallum fight. He said to me they (the judges) should have just given it to him. He told me about his upcoming book as well. After the training session Herol introduced me to his then fiancé Karen, who was working in a women’s clothing shop just around the corner, on Muswell Hill Broadway. I had another training session with Herol in a boxing gym in Finchley the following year. Herol was a defensive magician, and his skills were mesmerising. He deserved so much more in boxing and in life.

Agree it will always live with him. The receiver of the punch of the century . However at british and european level, bomber graham was a superb defensive slippery boxer. However Julien jackson was a world class puncher, probably pound for pound hardest puncher of that era .

Graham was a fine boxer and he comes across as a very decent guy, but all the athletes who suffer from depression post-retirement are a bit of a drag. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, and instead come up with a plan B given you can't box forever. Go to college and become a car mechanic, a chef, an architect...anything, but the secret is not to mope, but to live life and be busy. There are many former athletes who have let go of their past and successfully navigated this. Don't let your career/job define you. Or if you do, make sure it's a career you enjoy and one that has longevity.

So underacted by the British , but so highly regarded by American Boxers, trainers and pundits . Joe was a brilliant defensive boxer with a chin of Iron , and if you were a top 10 contender you had better be on your game to beat him , unlucky against Ernie shavers , and lost by one round to Lyle and came close to Frazier ,

gosh! had never even heard of him, despite being in my teens in 60's England, and being aware then of Billy Walker (also born in '39), Henry Cooper, Brian London, Joe Bugner, Terry Spinks, freddy Mills, and etc..... another wonderful boxing documentary/history lesson.... thanx again B of BB (aka WOODDDDDDDYA?).....

a truly excellent documentary, and for me, something of a trip down memory lane. it's in the vein of those understated yet highly informative 'quiet' sports documentaries such as the 1964 Tōkyō Olympics official film, dir. Ichikawa Kon, and cycling videos such as 'Eddy Merckx. The Greatest Show on Earth', and 'A Sunday in Hell' dir. Jorgen Leth. (all of those are on YT). this however, is certainly the most interesting and agreeable boxing documentary I've seen. so thank you much B of BB. (tip of the hat also, to Woodddddddya, who appears to have been the previous uploader)

Fascinating seeing London back in the 70s. A different world. Bugner looked great and seemed well liked by the public. I think it was the British press rather than the public whom he sometimes had a problem with. Bugner was a naturally big man whereas I'm convinced that many modern boxers are unnaturally big due to performance enhancing drugs.
