Many HK people were really afraid of the Mainland Chinese government, communist party. Many of them chose to immigrant to other western countries. I had relatives immigranted to America and Australia before 97. I think they all made the right choices. My cousins all became parents and live happily overseas

Unpopular take for a proud US citizen: by backing Kuwait and destroying Iraq’s ability to field a normal conventional army, and not looking the other way, we created a lot more troubles than we stopped. The destruction of their regular army, Iraq being bankrupt, as well them becoming isolated from western influence, led them right into Irans arms (who they hated before hand) and led them to becoming more or less a terrorist Islamist state rather than just another tin pot dictatorship. We completely destabilized the balance of power in the region. The ensuing terrorist attacks and the war on terror is a direct result of our victory and sanctions. We still deal with it today. If we had retained amicable relations with Iraq as it was, the extremism that exits there and in the surrounding regions wouldn’t have been or be as it is. And Iraq instead of being a purveyor of that, could’ve been a friend against it. Particularly against Iran, one of our greatest enemies, who has only grown so powerful bc they have no rivals to keep them in check. Who was their rival: Iraq. It’s not like we don’t deal with bad ppl and bad nations anyway. IMO, we made a bad mistake.
