i guess in a sense, this is why we reject khabar al wahid too. if only 1 in 100 or 1 in a 1000 people claim they saw something that the other 99 didn't see, we can safetly conclude that 1 was hallucinating. same way, if only 1 in 100 companions is related to have said that the Prophet commanded Muslims to do xyz, we can safetly say it was a fabrication because it is not conceivable that the Prophet would only tell 1, 2 or 3 companions a command of God and not tell all the others too.
