Nice to see that Rupert the Bear could get a gig as the drummer for Steeleye.

Just how old is the original song? 15th century?

I've been listening to this song since it was released, first time I've seen them preforming, only took me 50 years.

50 years on, and I can still sing along with all the words in the chorus. Fantastic song.

Maddy’s voice is perfect. Her ability to sing in odd languages is fantastic. Another favourite is ‘Cam Ye O’er Fra France’.

A dreary, depressing dirge - grates on me nearly as much as that appalling 'Fairytale of New York'.

I was 21 in 1973, and me and my long haired mates enjoyed singing this together whilst driving around in my old 1935 Morris 8 Tourer, attending gigs. The 1970's were great fun, although we were always skint !

Remember singing this with my old mate Julian in a concrete stairwell at Leeds Poly Student's Union ca.1973/4 - much to his delight at making sounds that worked! The accoustic was great - especially after a pint or three of Tetley's bitter. He's dead now, so cheers Jules!

Melbourne, 1974, Melbourne Town Hall, not the biggest venue, but it was intimate and even though I was stoned I still remember it. The audience was such a mix of young and old, all there to enjoy Span.

Remember seeing this lineup at Hindmarsh, South Australia. I was transfixed then and still am by this tale of moral ineptitude judging a book by its cover.

Thank you to Lord Smith, Governor Warren, Paady O Ryan .. Michael Killpatrick, Arthur White, Kevin Powers, Cruz Ramos .. The proof is in the pudding. People need people. They want love. They get confused. Love is not free. It's conditional. We all want to win but there can only be one winner: Kid Blackie The Non-Pareil. 👋

Why is that mad woman holding her head like that? Also, this is not the original melody for the verse.
@spanfan7669Күн бұрын
She is not holding her head, she has covered her ears (probably with a finger in the ear as well) so she can hear her own voice better - the days before in ear monitors. I guess you are young! And she is not mad, why would you think that? Steeleye did indeed slightly adapt the verse melody for their version, not a lot of people realise that, and usually sing the Steeleye melody (it is better after all ;) ) as it was Steeleye who made the song popular. Before they recorded it (1972), it was a very obscure hymn/carol.

A 13th century origin story with one of the most disturbing themes in all of folk history- Little Sir Hugh (9 years old) of Lincoln- She sat him on a golden chair, "she gave him sugar sweet She lay him on a dressing board and stabbed him like a sheep" - Steeleye's version I believe toned down the most horrible symbolism of this ritual murder to avoid dealing with antisemitic accusations behind this death.
