One of my friends, Paul, had one of the 4 speeds. His stepfather bought it for him. His brother, Bill, had a black '78 Trans Am, also bought by the stepfather. Bill worked for a Pontiac dealership. I remember riding in Paul's car and the red instrumentation lighting was so cool. I great looking car indeed. As much as I wanted one just like it or at least a Trans Am, that type of car was a bit out of my price range. The insurance alone would have been prohibitive. In 1980, I bought my first new car, a Camaro Rally sport with a 4 speed and blue over blue paint and T roofs. The one odd thing about that car is it had Z28 badges on both doors. I always wondered about that. I had a good 6 years plus with that card before it was totaled. Breaks my heart to this day.

I sold a few of them when they were new. I see it is a 403 Olds engine that came with the auto trans. 403 was used because of emissions. The 400 4 speed would not meet the new emissions. so the used just a few. The 400 Pontiac engines were 78 engines that Pontiac stock pilled for 79. I used to know the number of 400's that Pontiac stock piled.

All 79 engines met Federal Emissions otherwise they couldn't have sold a single one. Now manual transmissions had a tougher time meeting California Emissions so that's why many performance V8 engines with manual transmission were not available in California and this was the case with the 79 Trans Am. All Trans Ams bound for California got the 403 Automatic period, you couldn't even get the 301 in California because it was not certified probably because of the low expected sales for that engine. On Corvette for example there was no manual transmission available in the Corvette in California for 5 years from 1976 through 1980. Definitely tough times to be a gearhead in California.

Out of 5600 1979 trans am with the 403 Oldsmobile engine and thm 3sp auto, there were 1500 trans am that used a 403 Oldsmobile engine with a 4sp manual same as the 400 big block, furthermore the 403 Oldsmobile engine was a 50 state emission control engine the 400 Pontiac engine could not pass a California air resources board emission test.
@thud97979 ай бұрын
This is incorrect. All Olds 403 cars were automatic only. There was never a 403 manual transmission anything in any car including Formula or Trans Am and Oldsmobile never drilled the crank to fit a manual transmission pilot bushing so it couldn't have happened even if Pontiac had wanted to.

I agree - possibly the coolest looking car ever made. Though the 77 Bandit is iconic, those headlights were “disco” whereas these scream Rock! The silver is perfect.

Awesome car. But personally I think the 1970 T/ A . Blue W/ White stripe would be not only the best looking car Pontiac ever made. But the best performance car they ever produced.

My first trans am was a silver with white seats and red carpet, red dash 1977. Bought it new. My second trans am was a 79 black, black interior with the 403. I had ordered a blue 79 with the 400 4 speed, but Pontiac had several delays, I got impatient so I bought the 79 black with black interior. Eventually I painted it black with silver, using the anniversary graphics. Similar to the 1978 corvette pace car. To be honest, that color combination was actually prettier than the 10th anniversary. When the 10th anniversary came out, I bought one with the 400 4 speed. I’m a big fan of Pontiac’s and Pontiac engines, but truth be told, the Oldsmobile 403 was a much better engine, and ultimately made more power, with just a few mods. The Pontiac 400 was not as forgiving if you accidentally over raved it. It would spin a bearing, as one of my friends found out. One of the best old car pictures I have, is that of my 79 black silver parked next to the 10th anniversary. At the time no other car came close to the looks.

The Pontiac Trans Am’s are one of the best looking cars ever, timeless. The 2nd generation TAs had extensive wind tunnel testing and the aerodynamic do work, the front air dam moves air around the car, the air extractors not only vent hot air from the engine compartment, they also keep air from building under the hood, the wheel spats move air around the negative air pressure in the wheel wells, the rear deck spoiler exerts 55lbs of downward force at 70 mph
