After almost 30 years, nobody can still figure out what inspired Ely to come up with arguably one of the greatest Filipino songs of all time. Ok here is a hint: Ely likes Motown. Marvin Gaye. Listen to "You're All I Need To Get By." Then you will understand how Ely came up with El Bimbo's structure.. Key of G, but with Dominant 7th on the 2nd chord (A7), which is ingenious by the way, as you decipher that this is identifiably American blues Gospel in origin with a 1-2-4-1 dominating progression (G-A7-C-G). Blues and Gospel roots, where every English band of the British Invasion appropiated and feasted on (if you don't wanna say "they stole" because the Beatles are cute). I know, who would have thought that Ely was inspired and heavily influenced by Black music. But the evidence on El Bimbo's structure is undeniably overwhelming.
