Lupone was great. And I saw Lansbury perform Madame Rose. She was fantastic. And I love the Bette Midler movie. She was great. And I love the Imelda Staunton video. She was great as well.

The Crash of 08/the economy contributed to this shows run and Patti as ROSE coming to a halt. This and many shows at the time. Patti ranks with Bette and Ethel in my book

The best Madame Rose's are Merman, Lansbury, LuPone, Midler, and Staunton. I like Peters in most roles but Madame Rose was wrong for her.

Saw Patti in Company in NY a couple years ago and she was great. Saw her in concert last week in Sydney and she was amazing. Still has it.

These lyrics are amazing. The irony of “sunshine and lollipops” in the psychotic break are amazing. And Patti delivers the incredible power and ironic “optimism”. It’s like watching a horror movie! Guys, this is what musical theater can do that no other medium can do.

This song encompasses the heart of the American Dream and perception of Manifest Destiny - or “Sunshine and Santa Claus” - a narrative that is ultimately a fable but chase after as adults with the perception that with a will there is always a way. Despite the grandiose Disney like message of the song, it’s sung in a tone that constantly flirts with rage.

Patti lupone does not do even a modicum of restraint so not surprised to see Mandy Patinkin giving her applause he doesn’t either

The waves of shivers running through my spine throughout that performance until that last note....thought I was going to faint...wow, just wow. There's a reason why she's Patti Lupone.

Play video Momma Rose I had a dream, a dream about you, baby. It's gonna come true, baby. They think that we're through, but baby, You'll be swell! You'll be great! Gonna have the whole world on the plate! Starting here, starting now, honey, everything's coming up roses! Clear the decks! Clear the tracks! You've got nothing to do but relax. Blow a kiss. Take a bow. Honey, everything's coming up roses! Now's your inning. Stand the world on it's ear! Set it spinning! That'll be just the beginning! Curtain up! Light the lights! You got nothing to hit but the heights! You'll be swell. You'll be great. I can tell. Just you wait. That lucky star I talk about is due! Honey, everything's coming up roses for me and for you! You can do it, all you need is a hand. We can do it, Mama is gonna see to it! Curtain up! Light the lights! We got nothing to hit but the heights! I can tell, wait and see. There's the bell! Follow me! And nothing's gonna stop us 'til we're through! Honey, everything's coming up roses and daffodils! Everything's coming up sunshine and Santa Claus! Everything's gonna be bright lights and lollipops! Everything's coming up roses for me and for you!

I'm so glad that they stayed with the show until I got to see it the following year. There was a comment about her performance being terrifying, and I wonder if anyone else noticed the similarity in her last spoken line and Darth Vader's last line on Tantive IV in Star Wars?

Saw her in this as a young adult and it was a core memory as a lifelong musical theatre fan. Missed company but finally got to see her on her tour last night and she did two numbers as Madame Rose. If you get a chance to see her you must, far better in person than video can capture, that voice is beyond bounds.

Patti Lupone is a naturalistic actress who is stuck in character every second. More conviction is not possible, plus this foghorn of a voice.

Here we are in court today Rose just took the stand She's divorcin' me for reasons I still don't understand That dress is showin' more of her Than I've seen in years And the story that she's tellin's Even got the judge in tears She's accusin' me of hangin' out With girls of ill repute Adultery, abandonment Even alcohol abuse I just heard my mother shout Your honor throw the book And even my attorney Just gave me a dirty look Everything's coming up roses The house, the car The kids and all the cash Everything's coming up roses And I'll be lucky If I keep the shirt that's on my back My head is buried in my hands The courtroom is adjourned She got all I ever made And all I'll ever earn If I had a handkerchief I'd break right down and cry Why, even Johnny Carson Got a better deal than mine Everything's coming up roses The house, the car The kids and all the cash Everything's coming up roses And I'll be lucky If I keep the shirt that's on my back Everything's coming up roses And I'll be lucky If I keep the shirt that's on my back
