I remember trains arriving and departing at Newcastle, but not the cows being herded through the streets. Grew up in Basford, 1941 to 1960, up the hill from the station.

So many junctions on a working railway, this is great historic stuff, minus the music which was a little bit annoying, thank you for posting.

Excellent vid. I travelled that line a lot in the late ‘60’s and the stations were still there but most of them closed. My dad was a Traffic Controller in Stoke Power Box. He’d have loved to have watched that film. Superb! 👍

I shall probably get panned by the “It’s easy to be wise with hindsight “ brigade. But the report on the loss of the railways in the potteries predicted at the time this was going to lead to to much traffic for the roads to handle. Anyone who’s been to Manchester can see what a asset the Metro is. Retention of the potteries loop line would have created a better Metro system than that for the six towns. But politicians are never wrong??????

It was via a tunnel under Hartshill, emerging very close to where the Crystal Ballroom used to be in the 1950s

The main commentary on this is provided by the late Hughie Brown, who was a friend and colleague of my Dad. Hughie is waving from the brake van at the start in Stoke North Yard. My Dad filmed the departure from Stoke Yard, taking the staff at Hartshill, and the clip at Silverdale so Hughie must have filmed the tunnel shots and arriving at Newcastle Station.

Borough Arms Hotel just up from Bridge. Sidings used to go low level past Titley and Sons. fruit merchants , and ended about where the Crystal Ballroom was built....Sid Chadwick ( Hartshill ) Radio Shop used to get some of his stock dekivered via the goods sidings off Newcastle Station. There was also a branch to Stoke, via Hartshill Tunnel , with the Diamond clay Halt...Happy Days from the 50's and 60's.........anyone else remember ???? H6UK

I remember working there, when I was 17, just before the line closed for Goods traffic. There were two Signal men who worked alternate shifts and didn't get on with each other. One was able to quote Shakespeare plays. At the time I was there, the Station Master was a great chap, called George Wilkinson and a delivery driver called Jack and a wonderful character called Alan. We used to sort out the parcels for delivery around Newcastle area, each day. On this video clip, it shows a shed which was used by a few of us railway workers and adjoining Scrap Yard workers, where we would have our Tea and snacks. I recall sleeping there for a couple of months, when I was asked to leave my digs in Basford. This was in the middle of Winter until I found new accommodation in Stoke. Yes, I have fond memories of that time
