At the beginning of the 1967 model year, the 1967 Barracuda got the 383 option, to compete with the 390 Mustang and the 396 Camaro (the 1967 Firebird 400 wouldn't come out until months later). A high performance, hydraulic lifter small block had been developed for the 1967 Dart, to compete with the 327 Chevy II. This engine had a 318 stroke and a 4 inch bore. It had 318 size valves and its performance was so disappointing, that it got scratched from production. The 1967 Dart originally did not have the 383 option, so the 273 was the only high performance engine, until late in model year, when the Dart GTS got the 383 engine. The high performance small block did have an effect on the 1967 and "some" early 1968 318 cylinder blocks. The 4 inch bore was designed to accept a 0.040" overbore for service repairs and he 1967 318 cylinder block got super thick cylinder walls, as did a few early 68 318's. The failure of the high performance Dodge small block went back to the drawing board. It was overbore the maximum of 0.040" which resulted in the 340 displacement. The intake ports were made the same size as the 327 Chevy, as were the valves and the exhaust ports were made as large as possible. The 68 manual transmission 340 camshaft was designed to beat the 327 Chevy and had 20 degrees more 0.050" lift duration than the automatic camshaft. The original designed redline of the 340 was 6,500 RPM, but the desire to protect the cast pistons results in taming down the 340 valve springs, to limit RPM to 6,000 RPM. Mopar did sell heavier, drop in 340 valve springs for racing, but the NHRA wouldn't allow them in stock class racing, so thy weren't available for very long. The 1967 383 A-body engine was standard 4 barrel 383 and power steering wasn't available for 67. The 1968 383 A-body engine was the standard 383 4 barrel engine and not the high performance engine. Power steering was available on the 68 383, but required a specially machined cylinder block to mount the power steering pump. The1969 383 A-body got the full high performance 383 engine and the power steering option used mounting brackets and a pump that did not require special machining f the engine block. Mopar did a bunch of testing and stated the 1971 340 Thermoquad intake manifold with a square bore carburetor adapter, made more power with a square bore carb, than the 68-70 intake manifold with a square bore carb. It likely worked best with a properly tuned Thermoquad, but since Holley carbs were popular for racing, Mopar tested them on old and newer factory intake manifolds. The square bore 340 intake manifold was never opened up on top, like the 1970 383 and 440 intakes were. The 1971 440 intake went even further in high performance design, but the 71 383 intake did not.

Were the 340 CI cars faster than the 383CI cars? I read that MR. Norms in Chicago actually showed MOPAR that the "B" block would fit in an "A", body. These were a really affordable back then. Thanks for the information. 😁
@BrandonLeeBrown
@BrandonLeeBrown 9 күн бұрын
@@kensnyder2340 The factory 340 engines were purposely crippled by their factory valve springs. The 383 and 440 had RPM limiting valve springs too, except the 440 Six Pack. Mr. Norm installed a 440 in an A-body. The factory installed the 383 in the 67 Barracuda, but not the Dart, until late in the 67 model year. The 340 got the same carb as the 68 383, which was larger than the 67 carb. The 68 340 was available with 4.10 gears from the 68 D-100 pickup. 4.10 gears were still listed as an option in the beginning of the 69 340, but I'm not sure any 69 340's got more than 3.91 gears. Some 69 340 cars did get leftover 68 rear gear housings, which would have been required for factory 4.10 gears. The car magazine tests never had much luck getting the 68 340's to run well. Early 68 340's had thick rocker arms, with large diameter valve spring retainers that would interfere with each other. That problem was later fixed.

@@kensnyder2340 All of the 340 camshafts were modern (for the 60's), with more aggressive 75% cam lobes. The 383 camshafts were all older, "old fashioned", with less aggressive 70% cam lobes. Isky makes drop in valve springs for the 340 that allow it to really rev up.
