Liquitex matte medium is not a varnish!! Its a Medium for acrylic paints and to use between layers of paint, not as an finish. Medium is other kind of stuff than an varnish.

I kno this is an oldie video, but in case someone come check the comments: I use the medium and varnish for malleable heads (Barbie/Monster Hogh, etc) and the medium acts as a base/between coats only. The final protective layers are done with the varnish and I saw no problems with flaking/peeling and doesn't scratch way too easily in my experience. May be different on a hard surface, but just a heads up for whoever have it and want to give a try. OBS: I used it on airbrush, mainly in very humid/warm enviroments and waited a couple hours between medium coats (3 to start as the base) and a full day between the last medium coat and the first varnish coat.

You need the varnish, not the medium. I've been using the varnish spray and soaking it in water (to remove freckles I didn't like, etc. as I paint) and it works amazingly. In fact, it takes some serious elbow grease to get it off.

What about matte varnish? Checking the bottle backs medium says it's for preparation while varnish says it is for finish.

And it's water soluble. So who wants a faceup that just washes off? I also experimented with it, and it's just NOT a good sealant for faceups.
