One thing I’ve been doing is tuning the six string to a G so I have double base Gs and don’t have to worry about avoiding the 6th string tuned to D. I replace the six string with an A string, which I can tune down to the G the same as the fifth string so it doesn’t add too much tension to the neck, which would happen if you tune a six string E up to G.
@MatthewMoranMusic4 күн бұрын
@SlideDogsMusic-rw3zk interesting.. I spend so much time between open D, G, and standard that it may not work for me.

Hey, Im not trying to be weird or anything but man ! Let me start by saying I got a classical guitar the other day (actually I'm sure it's a flemenco) Anyways I am still semi new with guitar. Sorta. Music is embedded in who I am, piano mainly. But I picked up guitar a few years ago, then didn't have one to play for so long! And the style I feel in love with more than anything is the classical/nylon strings..ANYWAYS i love open tunings and came across your videos for chord shapes and more detail about open tuning. And then started listening to your other videos. Not only do I love the style you play but your story about your son hit me hard. I lost my dad to heroin about 3 years ago... I lost my mama Christmas eve going on 10 years now...(Wow it doesn't feel like it has been this long) ...after I lost my mom I completely lost it. I fell into a dark road and the more I went around my dad the more I became lost wasting away with drugs he introduced me to, and so on and so on. I broke free of that life completely now thank God... But yeah I could go on and on about my story. But your my music and your story I already feel as if I know you in some way. I am working hard building guitar playing skill. Im trying lol😂 Piano all day every day! I definitely am following your channel now sir. BtW Christmas being emotional for me and the fact I know what it is like to be on the other side of addiction and loss I can write lyrics!! I have a few songs I've written (lyrically) I'm sorry I don't mean to be a little much. I get excited over music especially when I can relate to so much
@MatthewMoranMusic14 күн бұрын
Well... you are probably weird but for all sorts of other reasons. ;-) But there is nothing wrong with weird... it's the perfectly normal that freak me out! Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story. I feel I rambled a bit but the story seems to have touched a number of people. Keep up the guitar. My advice is to start by learning a couple simple songs you enjoy. That seems to provide the impetus to continue learning. Of course, if you are playing a lot of piano, you already understand the music journey. Thanks again for watching and thank you for the follow and the comment.
@HeidiMyself14 күн бұрын
@@MatthewMoranMusic yeah I'll get there. Me normal, absolutely not. I uploaded a couple of videos I did earlier. I am brand new I've only had this guitar for maybe a week now. And before that I've not even touched a guitar in a few years and even then I barely had the chance to really learn much. I am beyond happy to get the opportunity to play again.. I don't have anybody I can go talk music with or any of that. I guess reaching out on KZbin is all I can do 😭🥺 I'm sorry kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGGzlpmfhcykiKMsi=frf5nGTTYvJpqAom
I get confused when you don't show all of the strings in your chord diagrams. It's so much easier when you show the chord diagrams rather than say " put your first finger on this fret " I like the video but again please show all strings in the chord diagrams 😊

This tuning is known throughout most the community as dad-G-ad, what is the logic behind tuning the G string down a half step when you can accomplish the EXACT same sounds and chords without even touching the G string? Just wondering
@MatthewMoranMusic22 күн бұрын
I'm familiar with DADGAD... but, even if close, that is not open D turning. Yes.. dadgad is often used. But there are plenty of songs written in Open D (or capo'd). For instance, She Talks to Angels is in Open E - but due to string tightness, I prefer to tune to Open D and capo on 2. The G string tuned down to F# becomes G#. This is correct for that song and the chord voicings used. The chord shapes would not be the same and the strings, all open, open would NOT be a D chord. The D does not have a G, it has an F#. While close, they are not the same and provide different options and benefits. Use either at your leisure and based on need.

I've been working my way through this flu... I'm mostly better but a lingering cough has made singing a challenge. However, even with that, due to some of the work I did with Leo, my vocal coach, I was able to work on a few takes yesterday afternoon and try some things that have never found their way into any previous songs. I'm taking it easy but excited to work on some things this coming week.

@MatthewMoranMusicАй бұрын
Not sure what you mean. You can't hear the tonal differences when only using partial chord shapes in open tuning? For sure more subtle than an entire chord shape but when played in a song or performance, it definitely creates a new sound. I'd play around with them and see what you come up with. If I misunderstood the comment, let me know.
@MrBarrynicholasАй бұрын
@ With any tuning and for whatever reason, the sound is most important. To me the droning and duplicate notes merge and become uninspiring.
@MatthewMoranMusicАй бұрын
Fair enough. I enjoy Open D and G but I'm experimenting with a few others. I also understand that, for certain voicings, playing only 3 or 4 strings is far better than playing all of them. In any case, thanks for stopping to comment.

Thanks mate, this was an eye opener...I mean I knew some stuff, but this approach of just listening what you get by playing around with two center strings, this might work for me very well :-)

I had a bit of an epiphany... or a smack on the head moment. I'm going to record a new original - acoustic - and a cover, each week. Also, going to create a video with an update of what I'm working on for live gigs, recordings, and about the songs selected that week. There is a story behind this song. I wrote it in 2007, right after a monsoon flood destroyed our home in Arizona. But I'll save the story for the video. ;-)

I really like the way you made this video. The framing of the video itself and the sound of your voice and GUITAR is it a difficult set up?
@MatthewMoranMusicАй бұрын
Hey Kip. Super simple. I am using my cell phone for the video - Samsung S22. I have a Zoom H4Essentials mic slightly above me to the right (so that my vocals are not drowned out by the guitar). The H4 captures two channels - though, basically the same. I bring the video and audio into DaVinci Resolve and use the auto-sync to waveform, which sync's the separate audio to the video audio. I mute the video audio and then apply a little reverb and a PSP channel strip to the audio. Ha.. that probably doesn't sound super simple. But it really isn't bad. I guess I'll make a video. ;-)
