Thanks for sharing. Your story is great. I hope you can motivate and train a lot of parents and teachers to improve their efforts and thereby give their kids better lives, God willing. The detail is beyond me but I want to learn the science so I can use the level of detail you have. It seems you've been quite clinical in diagnosing and addressing reading problems. I'm impressed. I hope you can share the story with people effectively. You have affected me. Thank you once again. I also want to give you a message because our paths might never cross again. It's a religious message. The message is to submit yourself to God. Islam is the truth.

I am just now (March 14, 24) findig this training. You mentioned a 2 part writing training in February. Is there a way to access a recording of that, or is there another one coming up? Evaluating writing is something I really need to learn.

Reading but can't spell -this is even continuing into adulthood as a teacher. [ '78 graduate ]. Just found your site - but- had found that wonderful book in '97 at Chapters while waiting for my sons to pick out books. I rolled my eyes but picked it up anyway. OhMy! I found a kindred spirit as I felt I was bucking the teaching of reading on my own against the tsnami of the forced methods of the time. [ Spec Ed - Closed the door and taught in secret ] Until this book - I only had M.J. Adams Thinking and Learning about Print My addition to the informations in these books is the fact that I had worked with the hearing impaired so began to teach hearing children to read as I worked with the hearing impaired. This method also suited children with other auditory issues - even LD are not seen as having issues in this area. Also further research in this area had me realize that my Dad, I and my youngest son all struggle with APD - so I am very sympathetic to these students. We don't hear it like others do! Reinforced by Diane McGuiness, I went forward with my program with joyful results. I would love to chat with you - this auditory aspect was the last missing piece - for many kids of all ages. Would love to make this method available. Set up is a bit difficult but follow up / monitoring is soooo easy that it can be done by parents and volunteers. With some kids - the difference improvement can be rapid. I need to change how I am approaching this child if they are not feeling a noticeable change in the reading immediately. I expect their decoding to be at the level of their listening comprehension in 6 to 12 hours of 1:1 instruction. [ has been as little as 1-3 as it was just a glitch ] Would love to chat - could talk reading all day. A passion. Been asked to write up the program but is multifaceted and am having difficulty - Still chugging away at writing it up - in the editing phase.

I understand being parsimonious with our time, but what about students with Dyslexia who have been introduced to these words over and over and it is still not orthographically mapped? What do we do with those children?

Learning this is what changed reading into something enjoyable for my son. He used to approach reading as a test of remembering the rules correctly. This gave him freedom to just try a different sound which alleviated a lot of anxiety for him. Thank you for this webinar!

You have such a level-headed, honest and humble view of the strategies used to teach reading. You want what is best for students even if it called for you to make some changes. If only all people interested in this work approached the topic in same manner.

Eileen said, "Words are made up of sounds. You can isolate the sounds. Sounds can be written in many ways. You never have \E\ is e (short e sound). It's never an issue b/c \E\ is a sound and you can spell it a bunch of different ways." I guess I don't understand how that makes learning to read or spell easier. It still seems like you have to be able to memorize things as you work with them so that you know how to use it later. Like \A\ can be spelled using eigh. If my student has a small working memory and is not able to memorize much, how does this help her?

At the 5:00 minute you show part of an easier to follow sequence that is in the book. Great, since I found the book order confusing, But where is the link? I can't believe so few people have watched these videos. There are fantastic! I would not have understood how great the Scratch Sheet Spelling if you hadn't demonstrated it! Thorough!

I don't understand why Phonographix doesn't find another word to use instead of DOG. The O does NOT make the /0/ sound! At least not in the Midwest. Listen to the "o"s in Hot Dog. Completely different. On a separate subject, I cannot for the life of me figure out the two different /th/ and /th(underlined)/ sounds all "th" sound the same to me. can you help with that? Thank you. I love the whole system in general but these are two things that bugged me after reading the book.

The "o"s sound the same to me 🤷‍♀️ The difference between the "th" sounds is that one is voiced and the other is not. The "th" in the, this, that is voiced, but the "th" in with, math, bath, thin is not voiced. (Voiced means your vocal chords should vibrate, if you're not familiar with the term.)

One thing that does confuse me is the use of [u] when describing schwa sounds. Why isnt the symbol for the schwa [ə] “uh” sound used and replaced with the [u] “oo?” I understand children may not comprehend the difference so maybe that’s the reasoning?? Why not teach these symbols simultaneously?

I’m currently working on my masters in SPED but have a masters in Voice (opera performance) I took diction in undergrad and it covers ALL of this. I feel like I’m sitting through a broken down version of the class because diction was so in depth. I am however learning what tests to administer but I am getting more out of KZbin videos than class. Could I have been given credit for this class or must I take the RICA to gain credit?
