Please consider the safety implications when undertaking this. Most mains domestic fridges use earth bonding for safety. To see is your fridge is earth bonded perform a continuity check between the earth pin on the plug and external metal chassis. Earth bonding means the metal parts are connected to the planet Earth (in a domestic setting this is a buried 1 m long copper rod). Your campervan is isolated from Earth by the tyres. Although your inverter has a three pin socket, the earth pin is probably not connected to anything - the 'Live' and 'Neutral' outputs are typically floating and interchangeable (in a domestic setting the Neutral is also remotely earthed). All this means that if you get a single fault mode occurrence, one of the floating wires could connect to the exposed metal components with difficult to predict and possibly hazardous results.

Aye. You’re not wrong. Please be aware that these brackets may have been updated/improved. I’ve left this video up incase these older ones are still around. Personally I don’t think I’d fit an awning to a future van. Most likely go for a tarp. This is fifth season and as we rarely use sites not out much. It’s a lot of extra weight. Saw a great tarp setup at willowfields recently.

Ah good to know. It’s just that a debate was had in the comments that I’d put them in wrong order. I have to say I did wonder at the time and slavishly followed instructions. They didn’t seem correct. Perhaps it’s the instructions they’ve changed. If you ever need spares I’d highly recommend “agent Fiamma”. They were excellent. There are some parts differences depending on serial number. I broke our rule and left it out unattended. A squall came through. Thankfully easy to fix. I videoed that but like loads of other vids I’ve done nowt with it.

If you look back through the comments you’ll see i now have an inverter with a switch. So I’ve now done away with the relay and low current 12volt. The stat has now simply replaced the inverter power switch. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Hello thank you. Yes that system worked perfectly for me using the very cheap inverter that I had. More recently I have installed a fridge freezer and an inverter which has an on/off switch. So I’ve done away with the relay and the 12volt through the stat. I have simply modified the inverter switch so that it is now simply switched on by the thermostat closing the circuit. No need for any 12 volt power through the fridge. I hope this makes sense. As it happens I’m at a van meet right now. There’s lots of ideas on various things being thrown around.

@@craster_van_kippers Motothome fridges (and cookers) are not only so expensive, I find them so ugly and clunky!... I love if you did a how to fit a domestic built-in oven + cooktop combination or a small domestic cooker (if either is possible)... I've looked all over the place for months for this information and haven't had much joy. Aesthetics and safety (and of course cost, but to a lesser extent) are my main concerns.... I saw in America they are using that cute camp cooker, but I worry about the safety, of fitting it permanantly, as the equivalent 'Kampa' camping cooker specifically says not for indoor use. Also an electric set-up (instead of having to have yet another fuel with the LPG, and the safety and inconvenience of it) would be better to my mind.

Surely not when the van is parked up? You’ve probably wired it through an ignition key trigger so it’s off with key out. Sorry just seen this. Notifications not working. Yes the relay method works fine. The stat circuit goes to the relay coil. However. Since then I’ve bought a cheap relay with an on/off switch. This does away with the relay completely. I took out the inverters on off switch and wired the thermostat in instead. This does away with the 12volt stat circuit effectively turning the stat into a simple switch.

Thank you. This was rigged with the kit I had at the time. Sadly I damaged the inverter physically and so replaced it. The new one has an in off switch. I did away with the relay and rewire the on off switch through the fridge stat. Much simpler and I now run a fridge freezer. At van meets I’ve met people who have followed this all are happy except one who had bought too fancy an inverter. His didn’t like the load on startup. This was corrected with a time delay relay. Ie fridge turned on inverter who’s out put was delayed by 3 seconds. Try a mock-up first before installing.

Someone asked about running other devices from the inverter so can you switch it on for those. I chose to run the fridge from a dedicated inverter sized just enough to run it comfortably - 110 litre Beko TSE 1284. Victron Phoenix 500VA did run it, but went into overload for 20 seconds when the compressor stars. So changed to the 800va version and that runs it fine. Inverter fan only comes on for a second when the compressor starts. I’d also came up with the hinge pivot point pin solution to door lock. Lovely solution. If you put the pin in with the door ajar then tie the pin back to the bench it will hold the door ajar for winter storage. I also put in expanding rods at the back to hold the glass shelves in place and same at the front to keep stuff on shelves. I installed mine in a Hymer when the 3way died so used the original wall vents and extra vent fans I had for that. Works fine with proper fridge & freezer temps of 4 & -18 or lower even in temps up to 40 in the van. I have a second smaller inverter for any other stuff. I think 240 volt (or 110V in the US) is the best and cheapest option, but people love to try to pick holes in it. ‘Inverter will kill your battery (rubbish). ‘Fridge won’t handle the movement’ (rubbish). ‘Too noisy’ (not silent, but very quiet). It’s by far the cheapest option even if you opt for quality components.

Thanks for watching. I’ve left this up to prove theory. However things have moved on. I accidentally damaged that inverter and replaced it with one that has an on/off switch. Therefore I now run a simple cable from the stat and soldered it across the switch terminals. Generally fridge stats are live terminal 6 switches to terminal 4. We also changed to a fridge/freezer which has been a game changer. I will be adding a small fan to the housing to expel hot air as we’ve again been in upper 30s on this trip (Romania). Also if the fridge doesn’t have the normal black “radiator” on the back, you’ll need free space down each side for its own heat to escape. The fridge freezer is now running in a 2kw max inverter which was £68. Do a mock-up off the van first. I’m using lithium batts now which great. However 3 days no solar or driving was a problem because of wife’s coffee machine, otherwise fridge freezer has not been an issue.

Hello Last year we spent 9 weeks in Portugal now running a fridge/freezer. The temp in south west France was in 40s. We were on hookup only two nights as it was included. We coped 90% of the time. In other 10% our AGM batts ran down to 11volts and our replacement more expensive inverter shut down. So now I’ve just done another van which now has the agms in and the original fridge. All is working great leaving it on psrked up at home. We put two 100 amp lithium in the black van and I have never seen voltage drop below 12 1/2. Those batts cost £680. The other van has a cheap ish 1000w 2000w peak pure sine inverter which cost £62 two weeks ago. It had an on off switch which I’ve connected to the fridge stat and ditched the 12volt and relay. This is much simpler and wish my original inverter had had a switch. We are about to go to Germany and daughter taking other van to Holland. I’ll let you know how we get on but I can assure you that it works great. We will miss every show this year sadly. Did get to Willowfields in April.

Very good idea, most people wouldn't think about, if something goes wrong inside the camper van. And that's a very easy fix. Cheers.

Thanks. I know it took me a while to realise. In fact I’ve just realised that my habit of reversing up to bushes or a wall needs to change as well. At least at night.

I learned "backing up to the wall" the hard way. I parked at the airport but because of covid couldn't get back for 4 months. Of course my battery died so none of the auto side doors could be opened. We were able to open the lift gate at the back about a foot and my slender little grand-daughter managed to shimmy in and unlock a door. But the whole incident really raised my consciousness of ingress and egress.

Yeah. We probably consider it safer against intruders but getting out is important as I’ve realised.

Great video. Apologies if I missed it but how long is your awning, your amazon link says it was a 340 so is it 3.40m. I have a long-wheelbase Peugeot Boxer L3H2 and the Fiamma supplier recommended a 3.7 awning in length because of the bracket spacing on the roof, would you be able to advise? many thanks John W

At this stage you might have the blinds sorted? Just an idea for the back windows is to use PVC electrical trunking 25MM as runners they can conform to the bend in the doors and let the blinds slide very easy, plus you can carpet it in 4 way stretch or paint. Its very cheap also, hope this helps. Great channel and videos with very good information. Cheers.

Thanks. You’re right. Things have moved on. I had a Guinness explosion one night which ruined a blind. I’ve since replaced these with good old Hopvaals running in 25mm trunking. The back doors have proprietary blinds which I got cheap in clearance. Check out @campervancreations. Jamie is great but went quiet as he’s recovering from a serious op.

I have a problem with fridge or inverter as there pulling 5.7 amps. Was fine but chances are it's fridge. I'm thinking about a table top freezer instead of fridge using a fridge temperature control. what do you think?

Yes they’ll draw amps when running. The point of this is that the whole system shuts down when low temp is reached. A lot of people leave their inverter on which of course wastes unneeded power. Thanks

Why does the screen illumination look like it's dimming and brightening?

The display does this whilst charging. It becomes steady when you’re drawing more out than charging Is putting in. If this irritates you, the backlight can be extinguished.
