It's getting to the point people who buy new homes will have to export their energy to the grid. Now EVs are becoming ever more prevalent there's a real issue with the electrical generators can not meet demand. Kinda catch 22 now.
@jesflynn404827 күн бұрын
well done for posting this; i'm astonished/bemused/disappointed at the lack of 'forward-information' from the energy suppliers regarding the future of 'the grid' and what needs to (or, rather, will) be done for the UK energy supply. The level of education amongst the general populace ('consumer') in this area is shockingly (sorry) low. Obviously peak-solar time photovoltaic generation is going to be priced to zero fairly soon; the UK has very little storage capacity - with little possibility of significantly increasing such - hence the rapidly growing rooftop/industrial/farmland generation capacity will soon result in overcapacity. Time-of-use/generation pricing will be the only power flow management tool being used in a decade or so, so why domestic batteries aren't being 'pushed' more is a mystery - if every uk home had just 5kWh of storage on a smart-managed grid, the resulting ~100 GWh would probably (?) do teatime (and the christmas turkeys) ok...
@alexlovett199127 күн бұрын
@@jesflynn4048 when we got quotes for solar they all included battery storage, same goes for other people I know who’ve had solar installed. VAT was also removed on home storage (I think this year). I think for a lot of people an EV might come sooner than PV, in which case they’ve got a massive battery sitting right there. We’ve genuinely considered getting a second hand leaf and a vehicle to grid charger to act as a large battery instead of increasing our home storage.
@shaneskelton-pd3rm27 күн бұрын
Having gone down this route I say Battery first every time - its you access to store energy from the grid overnight, normally about 17p per unit. This can keep most homes going through the day, especially between 4-7pm, the expensive time. Solar panels are a great boost in the summer and allow you to build up an excess £ to supplement your winter payments. Battery’s first guys!

Can’t really see this happening in the UK, I think octopus with their dynamic tariffs will be more useful for creating big loads during peak production. Personally I’ve covered my roof in solar and it’s very rare that I export to the grid. In the winter we charge the batteries up on the night tariff and the solar supliments it during the day. In the summer only a handful of occasions did the car get fully charged and we exported. With the drive for more electrification (heat pumps / evs / home batteries) there’s going to be increased electrical demand and less need to export.
@danderhallrailway514027 күн бұрын
I doubt octopus model is sustainable. In the summer I was being paid 15pkW from them to export while they were also paying people through negative pricing to use the over supply. So the excess is costing the supplier 20pkW. I fully expect it to move towards being only covered for a set amount of export to offset the costs and to encourage being able to live and use your own supply
@alexlovett199127 күн бұрын
@ I don’t think residential solar is that big of an issue, it seems that UK wholesale rates are driven more by wind than solar. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong I’ve not looked it up at all recently) I could see octopus adjusting the export rates to a dynamic tariff so that in the peak of summer you’d get a very low export rate but on the very cloudy days we’ve had recently have very attractive rates. (They may have something like that already).
@danderhallrailway514027 күн бұрын
@alexlovett1991 I agree the dynamic pricing would be ideal. But what it does lead into is that it will be best coupled to domestic storage.
@alexlovett199127 күн бұрын
@@danderhallrailway5140 agreed, it probably is likely to encourage self storage (not necessarily a bad thing) Batteries make sense with solar anyway, and they’re great paired with a night tariff in winter.

The feed in tariff had a government backed guaranteed payment for 20 years, which lasts until 2035 in my case. As such, I doubt if it can be changed without legal challenge etc. Does the same apply to the SEG scheme?
@authuruksake96928 күн бұрын
UK falls way short of the sun intensity of Australia or even Spain, plus the uptake of domestic solar is also way down compared to down under, where there is a much higher concentration of solar installs... So, I don't see this becoming a serious threat to charge to export, more likely the generous 15p or 16.5p (Eon) SEG, being lowered to say 10p perhaps, once they are able to reduce the large spikes/drops in the grid. Once the grid is in better shape & more importantly managed better in terms of generation/demand, the SEG may fall to 10p, but hopefully off-peak charging could also fall to 5p ??? This might reduce the actual revenue for exporting, but if you export 1kWh excess, you can still charge/purchase 2kWh off-peak, maintaining a 2:1 ration charging home batteries/EV like you do today Finally, if they do eventually bring in a charge to export (wouldn't put nothing past the present government), then OK charge homeowners to export at midday - but what about commercial wind & solar farms ??? Should they also be charged to export when there is surplus generation - after all, the consumers are funding all the kick-backs/subsidies they receive... I mean, fair's fare & all that - yeah but I won't hold my breath on that one & if these large wind/solar farms also get charged to export at peak surplus times, well I guess these charges will simply be added to the subsidies they receive - so again the consumers will help fund it (again) One thing I do know, the "energy experts" in charge, will make announcements/changes, implement them poorly & everybody will be impacted & foot the bill/more subsidies/increased standing charges etc... (Why change the recent format of ever increasing standing charges each quarter) Renewable energy in the UK is just too unpredictable though: Wind "can" generate 60% of UK energy one day, but next day struggle to hit 20% Solar, a 5kW system could generate 5x+ or 25kW on a long perfect summers day 16hours but in dark short winter days, that 5kW array, might only generate 1kW all day on a thick grey day for 8 hours (First week in November was very poor for solar generation) Plus, when you look at the National Grid various data showing all forms of generation, Solar provides only a modest amount of generation in relation to the national demand for 9 out 12 months of the year For the most part it is Wind & Gas battling it out for 60% & 20% (sometimes Wind = 60% + Gas 20%, others it's Gas 60% + Wind 20% Then Nuclear+Biomass then interconnections/import from Europe) What amazes me, is that at times we can still find ourselves importing 20% from other countries ??? So yeah, the National Grid is still in need of a major upgrade & seriously needs to be managed/operated way more efficiently Plus we are way way short of having any sort of excess like parts of Australia has with solar If they ever get close to managing the grid better, then perhaps they could shut down Drax, the green biofuel station that creates more CO2 than some of the last coal stations they closed, rather than consider charging homeowners to export

Ultimately, it's the government's choice - they can either capitalize on Virtual Power Plants, or they can take on the entire cost of the renewables themselves. There's a balance to be struck - and mistakes will be made along the way.

Options are: oversize tank-type electric water heater, space heat or air conditioning during the day, possibly EV charging and definitely, batteries for evening and backup power. As far as the electric providers wanting the system to be fair, if you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

@terrymackenzie678428 күн бұрын
Tariff is everything if you can buy at 7p and sell at 15p you need a home batter to cover your daily use 10 to 15kWh if you don't have electric heating.
@ivanviehoff602528 күн бұрын
It can be even worse. The wholesale price of electricity in GB currently averages around 7 p/kWh, but domestic customers pay a lot more than that. The price they pay includes a lot of money going to pay for the distribution system, and a number of levies to pay for this and that. And the average wholesale price at solar generation times, is lower still, as the demand peak is usually in the evening. So merely having rooftop solar and using the electricity means you reduce your contributions to the distribution system. But you still need that distribution system as much as anyone else when you don't have your own electricity, or much of it, like now in midwinter, even if (like me) you have batteries. In Spain, where there is a lot of roof-top solar, the electricity distributors proposed charging people merely to consume their own solar power, let alone export it, so that they did not avoid that contribution to the distribution system. Btw, if you are getting 10p/kWh for your solar exports that's actually generous. It's more than the wholesale price, which is arguably the most anyone deserves. I feel like a thief, because I'm getting 15p, and that's a currently available offer, not a legacy FIT. But if domestic customers got only the wholesale price, and still had to pay the full distribution system costs like other people, they'd never build it.
