Well, in three days I've binge watched the last 38 videos. I just started four days ago with a Vivosun worm bin, so I'm learning everything I can. I've seen not to start with too many worms, but what about too few? I started with 100 with the idea that they'll multiply over time. Great channel, I'm really getting good info.

I started with 100 red wiggles as well. Didn't feel the need to buy more and now I have several hundred in my tote. I really enjoy having them. They're fun little creatures and I love them

Thanks Raist! I think 100 is on the low end but the only real downside is more limited waste processing and (likely) slower reproduction until the population ramps up.

@ it was almost frozen at the bottom. I didn’t get a reading (too cold to go into the garage). It dried out a bit because I turned up the heat on the mat. I think I need a blanket for the outside of the bag if it happens again. I did see a few worms alive though.

Customer of pound of worms few weeks ago. The promise of "pure" vs "who knows which" mix from the most pushed supplier in the google search was my tipping point. All the way across the country usps delivery was slower than I would have wished since there was 2 holidays and a weather vortex in the works. But so far as I can tell things are going well. And today's topic answered some "I wonder" questions since my "HUT" is in our chilly basement.

Have had my UWB for 6 months or so. Stumbled through a very hot summer in Texas and now we are recovering from snow(I know), thanks for doing the UWB series, I have struggled with moisture and how much to feed them. I realize that I have probably been underfeeding them, based on heat and cold cycles and human digestive patterns. Down here, and I know you will cringe, but it gets so hot and dry that I do mist water from the hose directly into the bag. Not a lot but more than I could ever get from using a spray bottle. I find making sure to cover the feedings with dirt helps keep the fly/pest population down. I had a few in ground compost bins in my raised beds that supported a healthy population of worms but also had flies and pill bugs like you wouldn't believe. Thanks for the content. About to start a vertical planter with a vermicompost tube in the center. Hopefully I've learned a few things.

I’m from Killeen and just purchased a UWB and plan to set it up on Monday. I’d do it sooner but we’re at The First Monday flea market in Canton, TX. As a fellow Texan just thought I’d say Hi. My start up will be simple as I’m going to transfer about 3lbs of red wigglers that are currently in a very healthy bin system.into the UWB. I’ve been worm farming for less than a year sp I’m still experimenting.

Mosquito bits granules (BTi) are labeled for fungus gnat control in house plants. Been using it for over a year, works great on other flies like fruit and phorid flies. However, if your bins do not have them, the stored castings will not either if properly stored.

As a viewer, I really appreciate your content. I have purchased some of your worm castings while I was waiting for my worms to start producing enough for me and if I ever find I don't have enough, I'll be purchasing more. And here's another reason to keep these videos coming (although I think it's clear you already understand the value of them), I'm about to show a bunch of people the benefits of worm composting in their very urban kitchens with a little mini worm bin. But when they ask how to get started, I'll be sending them to Urban Worm.

I may not need any of your products, however, if someone is looking to start vermicomposting you are a resource I would gladly pass on. I agree worms are tougher than we think sometimes, Brian! We are hovering between 0-9°C (32-48°F) with our weather right now on south Vancouver Island. There are still tons of red wiggler worms alive in the manure we just spread on our flower beds and in my garden worm buckets. ~ Sandra

Greetings. Is it true that if I make a wormfarm from three parts where the bottom part is for excess moisture from the upper two parts and the upper parts are for compost, that when the earthworms finish with the middle part they will go up and thus enter the upper part? I took compost from the middle part and so on? Thank you very much
@UrbanWormCompany
@UrbanWormCompany 6 күн бұрын
In theory, yes. But if the entiure system is run so wet that the bottom tray has leachate in it, then it's unlikely the worms will move from the middle tray to the top. Worms love organic matter *and* moisture. So if they've got both in that middle tray, then they may be very stubborn moving to the upper tray.
@milosmarkus4468
@milosmarkus4468 6 күн бұрын

Thanks for sharing! If you keep the compost relatively dry, can you still get worm tea? I thought the worm tea only drip down when it's wet.
@UrbanWormCompany
@UrbanWormCompany 6 күн бұрын
So producing leachate which some people call "worm tea" is not a desirable byproduct of vermicomposting. Tea is actutally brewed with a deliberate process. The tea you're referring to is normally just excess moisture released from food waste that leached down through the vermicompost. Sometimes it's hard not to make leachate, especially in the beginning but it shouldn't be a goal of your worm bin. Wet conditions like that help produce anaerobic, maybe even pathogenic conditions.

I have been checking stored castings under the microscope to see how the biology is holding up. I use all natural bedding, leaves, compost and leaf mold, under the microscope I see a lot of unbroken down material that is acting as food for the microbes. What I am looking for with the stored castings is how long will that reservoir of food hold up before I see a decline in the microbes. I use two different types of screens for castings, 1/8th inch and 1/4 inch, I am trying to determine the best way to store castings. There is a lot of advice out there, but what are they based on, without actually looking at a microscopic level? Ran out of pumpkins a month ago, hate it when that happens, I'm a bad worm Dad. Enjoy your videos! Stay Well !!!!
@NanasWorms

Brian, a study on bin critters I looked at said the presence of the tiniest critters (mites, springtails) increases the microbial activity in the castings something like 1000 fold. These critters lay their poop along the channels created by the worms, which then fertilize the microbes and greatly increase their population. I sometimes use a worm bin to dispose of manufactured beddings, but I use natural beddings whenever I can because they produce the best castings. ~ Sandra

Thanks Brian! So my partner farm tested their castings at harvest and again after 6 months. The biology should be stable. We saw very stable bacteria with a drop in nematodes which tend to be the least hardy of the microbes. We did, however, see an small increase in fungi which was nice.
@brianseybert192
@brianseybert192 6 күн бұрын
@@UrbanWormCompany Pretty much have found the same. Few nematodes, no microarthropods ( a lot of body parts ), a lot of protozoa and oocysts with an increase in beneficial fungi. These castings were harvested mid Oct, will be checking in on them through the winter. Stay Well !!!!

Seems to me a realy simple idea wpuld be to put styrofoam or insulation foam on top of the heater to keep the heat trapped and then it will bridge origrate into the mass and out the sides. Or even adding mass like a piece of tile or stone on top. An insulation blanket arou d the bag would work well. You only need 65 to 70 f right?

How is it that those holes don't get clogged as the compost sinks and reduces in size?Those holes are at an oblique angle, what if the pipe were turned upside down, minimising the chances of blocking? Do you measure the moisture of feedstock before building the pile?

I have a Vermahut outside in my garage, and I have a little reptile tank heat pad on top of my warm blanket. And it’s cold as heck out outside right now and they seem to be doing OK. I don’t have too many worms in there and I have only started the bin maybe a couple months ago. So it’s not well established yet but they seem to be doing good, staying warm and moving around a lot.
