It make me sad to see these beautyful creatures kept in prison. 😢 They deserve to be free, they belong in the wilderness! I don’t like zoos or aquarium parks.
@B2-BradyBrandwood8 күн бұрын
Yeah it’s definitely a touchy subject. I also hate to see whales killed and slaughtered in the wild, octopus laying on ice in seafood stores… For some animals life in an aquarium may be better…. Who knows.
@Iris_Germany8 күн бұрын
@@B2-BradyBrandwood You are absolutely right what you said about killing whales and octopusses! The German Marine biologist Robert Marc Lehmann who leaded a great aquarium sone years ago told in his videos that the happy and healthy looking animals in aquariums are a product of dumping not good looking animals and catching „fresh ones“ in the wild so that visitors will never see the suffering ill animals. It’s all about making money with these poor souls and Robert regrets deeply that he has done this. Because of this I will never visit a zoo or aquarium.

My favorite outtings are zoos and aquariums. I agree with the educational purpose of keeping them ethically but I CAN'T STAND the BS lie of claiming giving animals "enrichment". I mean for cripesake! Nobody's fooled into thinking the animal is better off in captivity unless its truly incapable of living in its natural environment.

"Most ethical in the US" does raise some questions, regarding the Beluga whales. Is enclosing them in tanks ethical at all? How much farther could they go to make them more comfortable? I don't have the answers. These are just questions, not judgments. I have not been the this facility. But I do know that keeping marine mammals is not the same as keeping fish and invertebrates. That said, Belugas can be easily seen in the mouth of the Churchill River in Churchill, Manitoba, after the ice breaks up. This is their natural habitat. Family groups with young can be seen. They come into the river to rub on the river rocks and slough off old skin. I was there on a bird watching trip in the mid-90's, all you need to do is hang out by the mouth of the river in mid June and you'll see them. Also, the wildlife in the area is spectacular. It's easy to fly or take a train into Churchill (can't drive there) and then get around on the local roads by rental car or ATV. Moose, Caribou, Arctic Fox and more are all in the area. As a bonus, you could see seals on the remaining pack ice, and polar bears. There is also some long, interesting history in the area. It is a beautiful location I wish everyone could see at least once.

BTW, the train ride to Churchill from Winnipeg traverses a variety of habitats, and can be worthy of a trip in itself.

Wow, what a fantastic facility!! The leafy seahorses, the Belugas, that walkway entirely surrounded by sea creatures, the wall of moon jellies--all of it was amazing. Happy belated birthday, Brady; I'm glad that you got to spend the day doing what you love and I hope that the coming year will bring you much joy. Greetings to Leon and the gang!

I'm always torn seeing animals in enclosures. I've decided in my old age I'm happy enough just seeing them on my tv screen in wilderness documentaries. Still, it must have been an amazing experience getting to see them up close.

Well, it's still captivity, how nice it may be. They can only swim a short distance; their surroundings must be boring. Why should it be possible for humans to see wildlife up close?

Thanks for bringing up the captive critter issue. If an aquarium ( I hate zoos) is done correctly providing a natural habitat and room to move , I hope that it inspires and educates people on ocean conservancy. When I was a wee child, Jacques Cousteau films sparked my passion for the sea and it's inhabitants. I've been a lifelong fan of ocean critter docs and watch YT vids of people who travel the world and scuba/snorkel and am so shocked by how the fish population has decreased. You got to see a Whale Shark and I am so envious!

I do love seeing animals that I would otherwise never be able to see (in aquariums and zoos), but I hate that they're confined and not in their natural environment. However, I think it's one of those necessary evils. After all, the more we know about them, the better we can protect them and their environments. It also protects the few remaining creatures that we have lost in nature, so that they're not lost forever.
@Jessica-rh1et13 күн бұрын
Speaking on the beluga whales, as long as they are kept ethically, I think having them there helps spread awareness and also instills awe that encourages people to protect them and maybe encourage some to get into marine biology. Seeing them reminded me of the movie Star Trek 4: A Voyage Home where humpback whales were taken to the future where they were extinct. They were considered endangered when the movie came out and it got a lot more people involved and donating to their cause so much that humpback whales aren’t endangered now. ❤

Where as much as you love the beluga whales, my favorite are the rays. From tiny coffee saucer size to big batwing and manta rays. They fly thru the oceans
@KovietUnionDefector13 күн бұрын
On the Beluga subject .....it is comparative to keeping 5 people locked in a shipping container with a window for their entire lives. The range in distance and speed that they travel when they are free in their natural environment is vast and fast. Basically these beluga are entities of higher intelligence who do not belong in a " fish bowl". It is vastly different to the life Leon enjoys with you Brady. He is slow moving with a small range in distance. So ethically it is not an issue. The Beluga's or ANY Cetacean in an aquarium needs to stop.

I'm a month late but I'm gonna comment anyway. I've fostered and owned many, many cats and kittens in the past and Jet's leg looks like a birth defect to me rather than an old wound. With an old wound it normally doesn't look that clean and the fact he was like that from the first day you saw him makes me think more on the defect side. I've fostered 3 kittens with similar looking deformities, one of them did have to have it amputated for the same reason as Jet but the other two kept their stumps and are still alive and kicking to this day without it. Cats and kittens are incredibly good at adapting especially when it comes to missing legs.

@Aurora_26216 күн бұрын
What kind of monster is ok with offing animals for no good reason? God commanded us to be good stewards to His creations. God breathed His breath into All of His creations, not just man. The book of Job illistates just how much animals mean to the Lord. I, for one, am grateful for this family and their kindness to animals. May God bless them with wisdom and the funds to continue being good stewards. Intelligence dictates empathy. Lack of empathy dictates you're a soulless, narcissistic troglodyte with sociopathic tendencies. Keep yourselves away from God's creatures. You don't deserve their love.
