Americans treated the president like a president is supposed to be treated, and I hope Indians will learn it soon enough, A leader is not your father, they are just doing their job in exchange for money.

You're wrong. In western culture we do stand up to shake hands - on this instance, the public were warned by secret service agents to REMAIN SEATED - not to stand up - for security reasons...

it does not matter if the person is a president or prime minister, when someone offers a handshake, it is basic manners to get up.

To begin with, the concept of the 'most important' person' in the country is an incredible statement. India, like the USA is a democracy, not a kingdom. There is no Maharaja or a Padishah e Hind. (s)He is the CEO of the country, selected, elected and paid to do a job. (s)He is a service provider, like Vodafone or Reliance Jio. It's that simple. (s)He gains respect by his deeds, not by the official position occupied. This title is typical of our country's sad VIP culture. The most important person in the country, technically atleast, is the poor common man, struggling to make both ends meet. Obama is seen meeting common people who are (probably), minding their own business, enjoying a sunday with friends. He has gone to the people. Yes, it might seem strange to us Indians to keep seated when anybody, least of all the head of the country, comes to talk to them, but they are not Indians. Women anyway are supposed to remain seated when meeting men. As for the men, well, they didnt ask Mr Obama to come and meet them. Notice how comfortable the people were in talking to him. The US has given full respect to Obama by electing for the max two consecutive terms. On the other hand the people in the metro meeting Mr Modi had clearly been pre selected for this meeting and they were all sent to meet him, like supplicants approaching a Raja. In the Metro scene, the only person who looked comfortable was Mr Modi himself, because this is how he likes things. People approaching him with bowed heads and folded hands. And this will only work in the North. Let him travel in a bus or train in TN or Kerala. People will definitely be polite but they will not be dusting his shoes with their gamchas. Its high time we Indians,. stop treating our elected representatives like royalty and instead, hold them responsible and accountable for their actions. Mr Modi has not held a press conference in his entire term. His is a tanashahi style of ruling. This is not governance. To conclude, there is a saying in Tamil, "vekkya vendi edethhil vekkyanum" meaning keeping someone in his place, instead of raising him up to a pedestal.

Nothing wrong there, Indian culture says to respect elders by touching their feet and democracy says everyone is equal Americans are entitled but here they are not wrong. Chanakya would agree with americans

Americans don’t have culture of touching feet of their elders as a symbol of respect. They call each other by names like Mr John. In India we have Bauji, Mataji etc. It is a very stupid comparison. Love, friendship, relationships, respect - different cultures have different ways of expressing these things. Here in America, e.g. everyone (not only couples) celebrates valentines day like grandfather and grandson can celebrate valentines day because it’s a day to celebrate love. Whereas in India karyakartas of some political parties beat the couples celebrating valentines day, even though the couples of legal age have every right to be together. But the police still harasses the people and support these political idiots. Whereas you can piss in public openly which is obviously a sanitation hazard, but who cares. Tab koi police ni aati. In USA, you can kiss in public (as long as it’s not obscenity) but police takes you to jail if you piss in public, which makes sense. Indians treat celebrities like Gods, whereas Americans don’t give a damn. There are good and bad things in every culture, but before raising fingers on others, we need to look in our own ‘girebaan.’

Are Indian really doing it out of respect? or they are taught from childhood to do the same and they just obey otherwise feel guilty and ashamed. Indians are conformists, Americans are individualistic. Indians takes orders, Americans think for themselves. There is nothing great about being a conformist and naming it as "respect"

You're correct, standing up doesn't always means they have respect for that person but you're wrong too, someone big as him when walked by especially interacting with you and yet you are sitting also doesn't mean you've respect for him. It looks hell disrespectful. Barack Obama holds the kind of position for which he deserves to be respected

it reflects Indian society's embarrassingly sad culture of sycophancy, always kissing the backsides of people in power. It's a blatant falsehood to suggest that it is respect for elders. Indians treat elderly chauffers, maidservants and low-wage workers like animals. True, the US does not have a culture of respect for elders but they have equality, which is an alien concept in Indian culture.

Ok , so I will clarify. *Standing* and *Sitting* don't really signify any *respect* or *disrespect* but really do you have that *respect* in your heart matters. But what makes INDIA different is that WE FOCUS ON FLYING TO BE ABOVE ALL AND NOT PULLING TO BE ABOVE ALL. we know about usa how they learnt to fly and also how they pulled people down during cold war and still they do this. biden didn't even think of the consequences of pulling out of afghan.... when you start something bad then its your responsibility to either finish it or let others finish it. I am talking about terrorism. truth is the truth.... Either you hide it or not. all three so called superpowers are selfish *WAIT FOR INDIA , WE WERE VISHWAGURU AND WE WILL BECOME VISHWAGURU. NOT TO RULE THE WORLD BUT TO LEAD THE WORLD TO SCIENTIFIC AND*REAL* *PROSPERITY*
