I finished the game yesterday. It was wonderful. As a fan of the franchise I think Mel is as much a part of the Portal universe as the official games.

Seeing how this game lines up 50-100 years after the 7 hour war, I would have loved to seen some combine buildings or and APC, just something that points at HL2 in someway. Still, this game blows me away, Mel is cannon for me.

This made me gasp when I got to this part the first time holy shit

So chell was stuck at the underground facility and she noticed that she slept 200 years that is because of the relaxation vault causing all the city and buildings to be abandoned and empty

Then, Mel was no more. She just can't survive there

so this game is like a prequel to portal 2

looking at the ruins of what was the pinnacle of the achievement of aperture science, I would prefer to work in it

I love how at the end, it reveals that in this universe at least.. Wheatley was NOT the one to wake up Chell, but AEGIS as part of it's failsafe to stop GLaDoS.

I just realized that the combine will probably kill mel on sight...

actually, I find it kind of sweet that at first mel wasn't strong enough to open the door hatch, but finally, at the end, she managed to finally get out and open the hatch. It's subtle easter eggs like this that make a story satisfying. Mel's character arc was truly complete.

A small theory: the ending of the game does not imply apocalypse happened. What I think it could be is that the Apeture Science facility was completely abandoned after the GLADoS incident, and so Combine wasn't aware of it, so it was left completely abandoned. What I think this and Portal 1 was trying to imply was that GLADoS is aware of the Combine and so tries not to bring their attention by keeping all the test subjects who survived.
