Sensei, this is another great video that I like to come back to watch from time to time. The idea that the left hand needs to move straight forward and not move up (which is a bad habit I have developed) is very key. It is crazy how small inaccuracies in the fundamentals (that go unnoticed) can develop slowly over time into huge problems. Suddenly one day, you ask yourself, "Why am I not hitting right? Where has my sae gone?" .... and then maybe we don't realize it is a problem with the left hand, so we try to fix the problem with "more tenouchi," which CAN develop into using too much arm strength and too much right hand. Or we try swinging bigger... and we are trying to go fast in keiko, which then develops problems with timing, footwork and ki-ken-tai-ichi. One small problem can develop into multiple big problems!! Anyway, this is a great video and your slow demonstration and explanation is VERY good!! Thank you so much for your efforts and example!

If you truly wanna get into the mind of a beginner, you can switch from left foot back and left hand on the end of the shinai to right foot back and right hand on the end of the shinai for a bit. Mirror mode is fun to try every once in a while

Yeah, I did a couple videos on changing the fail of the 5th dan for me to a pass which I trained a year for from the fail, and what made the difference was mainly kihon and some of it was psychology of performance on the day. Mainly it was kihon though but applied kihon.

When I started practicing kendo using the shinai was compared with fishing: the movement of hands was like throwing ahead the floating part of the fishing road. If one is fishing and he / she is dropping the elbow too fast the floating part will drop too near, and it should be as farthest as possible.
@KendoGuideАй бұрын
That's a great analogy! I used to tell people that. I think it helps with people who actually fishes. And also it needs to be ajusted a bit. But it is very very similar! Thanks for sharing!

Knees over toes is not a bad thing. Check out RP ( Renaissance Periodization) fitness here on KZbin . You'll see proffesor Mike Israetel ( hope I spelled it correctly) talk about form for squats. Full range of motion is really key for them. For Kendo application like Mawari Suburi or something like that it's not necessary to go so low, but for outright muscle development and strength gains the range of motion is a big benefit.
@KendoGuideАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your insights! A lot of fitness experts say many different things so it is important for us to listen to our body. When knees hurt, we need to check our form. Same as kendo, isnt't it? What is Mawari suburi? Is it Matawari Suburi? I think you meant Matawari. That is as well. People put a lot of effort in these suburi but their posture is sloppy. Do you have a video of Matawari on your channel?

I found an iaito I like and now I need to find the correct size for my height. Many people have told me to get a longer one than the sizing chart says. What do you recommend? I'm 180 cm tall. Thank You Hiro Sensei!
@KendoGuideАй бұрын
Thanks for your comment and question, @somethingsarejustrainworld5018! 😄 What my sensei told me is that you grab the sword with your right hand at where you're supposed to grab on the tsuka, then relax your right arm. The kensaki of your sword should barely touches the floor. That is the length you want. I am sure some sensei say different things but that is what my sensei told me. Hope this helps! PS...Please subscribe to my channel if you haven't! Thanks for your support! 🙏

Hiro Sensei, I wanna know why you use bokken most of the time instead of shinai. Is it beacuse of the weight?
@KendoGuideАй бұрын
Thanks for your question, @behic5010! 😄 Good question! Firstly, we used the bokuto because my students could grip it correctly because of its oval shape. That's all! PS...Please subscribe to my channel if you haven't! Thanks for your support! 🙏

In this exercise, is there emphasis on activating the right glute?
@KendoGuideАй бұрын
Thanks for your question, @vincenthernandez1646! 😄 I am not really focusing on that but you can. The main purpose of this exercise is to use the right knee to recover from the posture after having your feet apart as you do in fumikomi. That is the main purpose. Of course, if you want to focus on the glute, you can as you can see in this video: mmstrength.page.link/o87AaBMiw7NA5Qg56 PS...Please subscribe to my channel if you haven't! Thanks for your support! 🙏

@ thank you, Imafuji sensei. The reason I asked the question is that I’m not very physically coordinated. I worked with a professional physical trainer to learn how to activate specific muscles. When I push forward, I activate my upper leg and left glute. That helps a lot but I still struggle with the latter portion as you cover in this video. I love how you break these movements down in your videos. I’ll try this exercise with the right glute in mind. Thank you, sensei.
