Allocation lotteries and drops are stupid. In WI, there is no such nonsense. Bottles placed on shelves of the majority of stores at state law minimum markup prices, I believe it is still 6.5% over mslp.

Didn't get into hunting whiskey until early this year. In Aug/Sept 2024 found 5 of these A123, (2) B522 & (1) B521 at the same store, just sitting on the shelf in the open next to the other EC stuff. They are $76 total (no sales tax on booz state). Got some of the A123, but left the others.

Myron, It's not your palate or preference changing, it's the whiskey inside that changed. KC 9yr used to be my favorite, also. The original KC from 1992 to 2016 was the good stuff. Sometime in 2016, they started the NAS KC & that stuff wasn't even close to the 9yr. Even when they brought the 9yr back in 2020, still no good. Most or all of the older juice is going into the 12yr, 15yr, 18yr or SiB. For WT101, not sure exactly when it took a dive, but I know the batch bottled on 10-17-2017 is at least twice as good as the 1-20-2021 to present batch.

Wouldn't pay over msrp for anything but ECBP C923. That could change if I try something that I really like. This year got a couple E.H. Taylor BiB at $58.98 at a grocery store. Think that is absolute top dollar for that bottle & didn't like paying that. Could have bought more at that price, but left them. They raised the price to $69.99 & they are just sitting there, nobody is buying. At same store got some Blanton's $59.98 & one Eagle Rare 10yr $58.98. Won a lottery this summer to get Stagg 23B $70.

Great episode. I really try to avoid secondary. However, Stagg is one of my favorite pours. I paid $185 each for 24B and 24A. To me, that’s worth it but to each their own! $200 is my limit on that bottle. Life has gotten more busy for me in the last 6 months and I don’t have the time or energy to drive all over town trying to find it for retail.
@BourbonDrop3 күн бұрын
I can't argue with that. YOLO. If you got it, spend it. A buddy of mine buys what he likes no matter the price. If he feels like it's worth it, he snags it! He trades Staggs away. He hates them. 🤣 24B is such a monster. BTW 🥃
@Posterharpua3 күн бұрын
here's a beginner's guide to secondary: have patience, and simply do not participate. Better to just support your local bar and pay for each of these whiskies as an individual pour, realize they are NOT worth the secondary market price, and move on to what's sitting on shelves because there's some pretty elite bourbons and ryes to be had at retail price. you can basically set an upper limit of, say $140 for a bottle and do VERY VERY Well in the retail space. VERY Good video for the newbies, here.

I agree if you get Weller 12 for retail hold onto it for a treatable asset. You can easily get $120 men for it from a bourbon group. I would pay $120 for old Weller antique because it’s so rare and even if it does appear in a store, it has to be pure dumb luck to get it at retail.

Secondary really comes down to your area. State Controlled is much easier to get allocated at a fair price compared to me in Michigan where we don't get a ton of Allocated overall and no one sells it at MSRP...double MSRP is the bare minimum. You really need to understand your area and what the average price you are seeing. Weller 12 for example...cheapest that has every been here is 150 at one store. Typically 200+!
@BourbonDrop4 күн бұрын
That's insane! Here in MD it's pretty much the same. Most stores have crazy prices on BTAC and Weller. I even know of a store that had Russell's 13 for a Thousand. 🥃
@robertreitermanjr29734 күн бұрын
@@BourbonDrop That's why I really pay attention to the area...here...West side vs East side of the state is different. This is why it's helpful to travel to the states around you. Ohio is Weller land...they get it all and for a great price. Just need to pay attention to the trends of the area. We don't really see RR13...only seen a couple in the past few years...did get one for 250...but that was the only one and the only time I was able to get it.
