This is one of the last episodes of the Susan Stafford era! Within 2 mos., she'd be replaced by a newcomer, a model and a former TPIR contestant, Vanna White, and has been with the show, ever since.

We used to say "retarded" people. Honestly, that's not the worst part of it. It's that most of the people have some kind of disability, like they need a wheelchair or they're blind, or are an amputee; it has nothing to do with intellectual level.

In Michigan, it was on WXYZ 7 in Detroit. WJRT 12 in Flint didn’t clear $20K Pyramid becuase 12 aired news at noon. Other Michigan clearings were WZZM 13 in Grand Rapids, WUHQ (now WOTV) 41 Battle Creek and Lansing thus Lansing did not have an ABC affiliate of its own until October 1990, and WGTU/WGTQ 29 & 8 in Traverse City.

It was the thing back then. Do you know how it began? He didn't just start doing it because he liked to do it everywhere all the time. There was a contestant on one of the early shows who as really nervous and Dawson asked if he could give her a kiss for luck. She says yes, and then when Richard went to the next contestant, she said, "Well don't I get a kiss?" Some people did think it was creepy, so finally Dawson asked viewers to write in if they wanted it to stop, and the viewers overwhelmingly wanted it to continue. People didn't like it back then, just as they don't now, but today society backs them up. Back then they didn't care whether women felt offended or uncomfortable.

It seemed few of them ever turned him down. I think it all started during his Match Game days. You win some money, you get to kiss the star that you matched answers with. Gave ordinary folks a chance to live out their fantasy.
