A wrong and dangerous method for righting a swamped canoe. Do not stand in a canoe, especially while trying to lift weight that will put your boat out of balance. You're in danger of having two swamped canoes! There is a much better method!

I have used the services of Algonquin Outfitters many times over the years for both family and non-profit group trips. Always an A+ experience. I also own a Swift Kipawa canoe built by Swift Canoes. 😊

I just showed my 9 year old where the instructor allows the paddle to contact the gunnel, which I strongly discourage my boy from doing. We decided I need to talk to this instructor's mother.

Really effective stroke! I paddled for quite a few years before I started using the cross draw a lot. Watch C-1 races…They all paddle offside almost as much as on.

Good demo. Another way to steer is using a “C” stroke. Depending on the situation, start with a small draw stroke, pull straight, end with your rudder stroke which can be a really hard pry. Unless you are on a leisurely calm lake, end your power stroke at your hip -not behind your body. You have much less power behind your body. In whitewater, it’s important to lengthen or shorten strokes depending on the situation. I’ve seen beginners with only one stroke length!

Would the same technique work with a kayak? You'd have to lift each end in turn to get the water out.

Soloing is best best done using a kayak paddle. Unless you're a glutton for punishment, then by all means help yourself. Only time you should be soloing with a single blade is in fast currents or whitewater.

That’s probably the best explanation of the J stroke. I was doing most of those errors 😂. I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working for me. Most of the videos I’ve watch make it look so easy

It should be noted that the stove should be lit and run with the gas canister in the normal position for a minute before inverting the canister. The preheating tube needs to be hot or the liquid fuel could flare up.

The C stroke is a great stroke. I would not say it should end in a pry, that probably has to do with the large bow out of the water. The basic principle is that if you paddle on one side of the canoe, the boat will curve away from that side. If you paddles in a curve under the boat, in the opposite direction then the boat goes straight. Equal and opposite direction. The paddle through the stroke is offseting every unwanted movement of the canoe. The smoother the stroke, the more elegant and efficient it is. But depending on the conditions it may need tweaks like pries or draws mixed in. One should always look for the least intrusive correction.

That style of paddling is fun, but can be a problem in wind. The front is well out of the water and depending on wind direction can prove uncontrollable. In big open water, where a lot of accidents occur, it is important to think like a sailor. Balance with the wind. this can require some unorthodox positions in the boat, to get it to weathervane to your advantage. If a person is tempted to move back to get a piece of the seat, the bow will rise even further out of the water, and the immersed sections of the boat will start to behave like a log in a rolling contest, then if the wind comes to the party you may find yourself swimming in the water. Not that these are bad techniques, but one has to experiment with them in safe, warm conditions, and poke around to discover what they do well, and what they do not.

I wonder if these are better than the Ally canoes. I've paddled an Ally once and will never do it again unless i have to. It was a dog to paddle, had no glide, poor maneuverability and lousy tracking. I'm guessing that the inflatable hull of the pakcanoe helps some.

The problem with the J-stroke isn't that it's awkward, it's that it's painful! You are contorting your wrist into a very stressful position, and doing it over and over must wreck havoc on your wrist joint. And I don't see why it's more efficient. They're both stern rudders. The J-stroke uses the same face of the paddle for the power stroke and the pry/rudder, but so what? How much more efficient could it possibly be?
@jimsmedley234
@jimsmedley234 2 жыл бұрын
It's neither awkward nor painful. It's more efficient. This is because you don't change change the power face of the paddle. This has to do with hydrodynamics. Want proof? Watch any canoe slalom athletes at the Olympics or any World Championships (C1 or C2) - you will never see a goon stroke, only the J-stroke where needed.

Looks like this is marketed as the NEXT. Which I think is a better name for it. When manufactures use only a few model names then and two or three additional words for different versions, it can only lead to confusion.

63 lbs is heavy for portages. If you can afford one, a canoe that's under 30lbs is much better. 14 ft Prospector style is ideal.

Its not meant for calm lakes. It's for rapids and intense waters, better off buying aramid if you canoe your local pond.

I only argue with people I like. With your technique your paddle will be 4" too short. My bent shaft paddles have a bend starting at top of forehead, not bottom of nose. My straight shaft paddles, that I use in whitewater, are 4" longer. I've been canoeing for over 30 years. I'm 6' tall and my knuckles do not drag... well only a little. Maybe you're sizing a paddle for a flatwater racer, those people that have a 90 stroke per minute cadence. I'm no racer, but I'm 68 and I go faster than many people. I reach forward and use my torso and arms together to pull back. I use a Bending Branches 54" bent with a rock guard tip. My Grey Owl 54" bent needs reconditioning. Both fine paddles.

Exactly how my dad taught me just fucking brilliant. Makes canoeing way more fun you can canoe on your own, with friends that can't paddle worth a shit and its honestly just fun to paddle when you don't have to struggle in the wind or just going all over the place because you have to change your paddle side every 2 seconds.

I really dislike the J stroke, I never got good at it and it seemed like a good way to get nerve impingement in my wrist. The goon stroke comes natural and is more powerful, at least for me. Thousands of wrist contortions a day can't be good. Seems like a cause of tendonitis.

Surprisingly the difference between the two is not that much using this technique. At no point are you lifting the full weight of the canoe. When you are pulling it out of the water, you slide it along your canoe which takes most of the weight. When you then flip the canoe back upright, most of the weight of the canoe is on your canoe as well.
