Amazing man, I thought I’d done something by making a hammer handle out of an old broken hammer handle. And out of all the rudimentary woodworking I’ve done over the years, I never realized that a 64th of an inch would make a difference for the hammer head to fit

Thanks, it’s crude but helped me make sure it’s gonna work out. Btw hammer and ax handles are an art form so don’t be too hard on yourself

You probably already know this: that style of bracing is Norwegian in origination. Awesome thanks for sharing. Do you have any books published on Timber framing?

FYI, there are many ways to do the English tie joint. The problem with tie below plate, is that the weight of the rafters is putting pressure on the post and the tie joint, especially if the distance from the tie to the plate is a lot. The English tie joint makes a hard triangle and is much stronger. In old barns and houses in New England, structures with Tie below plate are almost always "splayed" from the weight of the roof system pushing out on the posts. While, english tie joint based structures rarely have that problem even over the course of 300+ years

I got it from looking at many old houses here in CT, and also it is fairly well drawn out in Fredrick Kelly's book called "Early Domestic Architecture of Connecticut" which is a treasure of a book for everything from timberframing to interior design of period houses. The Champion House in East Haddam CT has almost the same buildup as this, but with a slightly smaller under-crown (which in hindsight I would have made mine smaller as well)
