This is top songwriting: the song keeps this duality between D major (happy memories of him as friend and lover) and D minor (now a stranger, melancholic mood). In the verse, the D major chord occupies the most important positions (first and third), and so it is as if the first impression that comes to mind seeing him are happy past memories, but then the chords turn into D minor right away, as realizing that this is no longer true, and then back to D major as if she would try to hold to what he was for her. The strangeness is in some small details the harmony as well, as the contour rises when the chords from the parallel minor are used, which is kind of contradictory and makes the borrowed chords from minor more prominent. The closing diminished chord that was not heard before is a last note of additional sadness to finish it all.
