So happy for the Casillas brothers to have been able to carry VGS on for all this time. Our band played with them frequently when they were a four piece, the backyard era, the Spanky’s era. One thing I would add was that they had the coolest, most supportive dad. When they were teenagers and it was still socially risky to be a punk and parents were rarely hip enough to get it, he stood by them and seemed to back their every move. I’m sure it helped tremendously to have the approval and encouragement of such a good father. So cool to see it’s paid off for the brothers. Great interview, Matthew. Thanks for doing this.

Drums make music rock and roll. Xylophone in a punk band is pure party mode.

I think it's sad that female bands, even now, have to struggle for acceptance, and there's an assumption that if a band is all female, then they are either 'ultra' feminist, lesbian, or put together by a record label. Over the last few years I've got into a lot of bands from East Asia, and despite them supposedly having attitudes that are meant to be 'behind' the west, they don't seem to face the same issues, and there are a ton of all female bands, and nobody bats an eyelid. High school students of both sexes there are also encouraged to play musical instruments - all kinds of instruments - which helps. One punk band I have got into is Rumkicks, an all-female band from South Korea. They get a fair bit of online abuse, and virtually all of it comes from the USA, where punk seems to have a real problem with deeply misogynist fans who think punk has to be extreme, violent, and male. Oddly, when I touched on a similar subject with a band from England, they said acceptance was actually hardest from other women in the scene.
