To reply to part of your question. Liechtenstein originally used Austrian stamps. The wording on the early stamps is "k.k. österreichische Post im Fürstentum Liechtenstein’" which translates as Austrian post in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Austrian stamps continued to be good in Liechtenstein for a period of time. But whether these stamps were good in Austria I am not sure and that is a good question. Perhaps someone else knows. I was just reading an article about a blue winged butterfly in California that has become extinct so that is a possibility. When I was young I used to see a Goodyear blimp flying around but have not seen one for years. The plant that you could not remember is a cattail. I am familiar with the fox Luxembourg stamp. It is Reynard the Fox. I love Medieval literature and he is part of it. Luxembourg has three official languages, French, German and Luxembourgish. The Luxemblourg thanks stamps would be for WW 2. Korea did a similar thing. Just an FYI, Luxembourg is a Grand Duchy. My favorite stamps from Luxembourg are the Officials that have the word "Officiel" punched in perfins. I am trying to get a full set but am still missing three, Scott notes them but does not list them. Keep on a lookout for them. The SP overprint stands for Public Service.

Haha, who doesn´t want to live in Liechtenstein, which is a very beautiful and wealthy country in Central Europe. But you need a certain amount of $$$ for a living over there. Same with other tiny European countries like Monaco, Luxembourg or Andorra, known as a "tax oasis". And you got a pretty neat assortment of Liechtenstein stamps as well. First they used the Austrian currency: 1 Krone = 100 Heller and then switched to the Swiss one: 1 Franken = 100 Rappen. Back in the days, Liechtenstein stamps were highly recommended as a brilliant stamp investment. Greets from GER, U.

Hello Kyle. Just discovered your channel and subscribed to it as I love your passion and enthusiasm for the wonderful world of philately! As per Lichtenstein, like you said, it is a principality and is therefore ruled by a prince. Luxemburg is a Grand-Duchy and is ruled by a Grand Duke (or Grand-Duchess). The UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Danemark are kingdoms and are ruled by kings (or queens), and if there was still an Empire in this world, it would be ruled by an Emperor (like Napoleon I, and Napoleon III in 19th century France). Getting ready to check your other videos! Cheers from Provence

The colors in the one set of dues are like the early GB Victoria stamps in that the inks will get damaged by water . Majority of the postage dues are easily identified through wtrmrks but silk paper is easily identified through the diff color threads in the paper.

Hi Kyle. "Is it really a surcharge?" around 41:50 on the video. Yes it is, because 12 mark (think dollars) is more than 40 pfennig (think cents). I enjoy your totally improvised episodes. Some day, hopefully, you'll run into a true gem.

Nice, a Cabinets Episode! I tried to quickly read up about Germany and German States, but it is pretty complicated, so I didn't try too hard. But now I learned a bit through your video. The surcharge definition - yes definitions of terminology can be difficult and frustrating, and it is so important, to exactly know what someone means by using a certain term. It was an interesting episode, Kyle. Thanks!

Towards the beginning, you commented that stamps should be about important topics. So, nothing like a pencil, for example. The pencil is actually more complicated than most people think. Look for an essay called "I, Pencil," by Leonard Read, and you can find audio of Multon Friedman talking about it. You won't ever think of a pencil the same way again.

Interesting assortment of German stamps. In 19th century, the German States got different currencies like "Pfennig / Thaler" in most Northern parts and "Kreuzer/ Gulden" in the Southern states. After the unification in 1871, the "Deutsches Reich" had one single currency: 1 Mark = 100 Pfennig. And: Germany never got a double eagle in his coat of arms. If you find these on stamps, they are mostly from Austria, Russia or Albania. 22:45 That´s the third Prussian issue from 1858 (gegitterter Grund), No watermark used for these stamps ! The first issue is easy to identify because the stamps were engraved. 25:00 These stamps don´t belong to a collection of "German States", but to "Soviet occupation of Germany" after WWII. 25:43 This stamp was issued by a private company: "Express", delivering local mail in Hamburg during late 19th century. Greets from GER, U.

Any stamp that has any damage whatsoever goes into my trash. I do not even have to think about it. Lol! I never thought about it but you are correct that surcharge generally means an addition. However most countries surcharge to a lower denomination to keep people from overprinting them themselves. No one is going to forge a surcharge with a lower denomination and lose money. Inflationary period issues are a different matter. I have to agree with you that it may not be the literally correct word to use but it is the word that is generally accepted in stamp circles. Perhaps those paper hinges are homemade. Nice video. I like German stamps too.

I have always loved the Albanian stamp with the shooting star. Unfortunately I do not have any so I will have to keep looking. For #30 & 31 if you look at the app picture the zig zag line around the edge is not consistent either. So having both thick and thin lines may be normal for the issue. The stamp at 30:55- The reason they did not put lines through the 2 is that the surcharge is from 2 Heller to 2 Qintar. Heller is an Austrian currency. I am not that familiar with the stamp but it might be some kind of occupation stamp. Hermes and Mercury are basically the same person but Hermes is Greek and Mercury is Roman. The Omani stamp at 41:57 is a Cinderella. Another one at 50:56. No real Omani stamps say State of Oman. We all make mistakes when beginners. Mine was that I bought a lot of country packets like "300 different stamps from Albania". The sets had all the low values but none of the high values. That did not bother me as I woukld look for the missing stamps and I bought a lot of these packets. It was not until I started going to stamp shows that I realized that nobody would have just the higher values so I had to buy all the sets again. Ugh! Some aquarium shops have seahorses. On top of the pole on the Paraguayan stamp at 1:04:20 is a Phrygian cap. During the French Revolution it was the symbol of freedom so a lot of French stamps have this cap on them, especially Marianne. During ancient times it was worn by freed slaves. Bhutan is cool! Not all semi-postals have the second value printed on them. On the Hungarian stamp Legiposta means airmail. I believe Magyarorszag means Peoples Republic of Hungary. The Bulgarian stamp you picked the wrong one. A sash is something one wears over the shoulder like the Boy Scouts to show their merit badges. Your stamp appears to have a sash but the picture you chose does not. I always love your videos. Phooey on mean people. Thanks for teaching me the correct pronunciation of Pho. I had seen it but was pronouncing it wrong,

@@KylesStamps Depends on the technical equipment. For example, the United States decided for a long, long time to use line perforation. And that´s the reason why older U.S. stamps which are well centered achieve much higher prices.
