Reginald Fessenden was a Canadian radio pioneer who on Christmas Eve in 1906 broadcast the first program of music and voice ever transmitted over long distances.😊

It's not actually the sparks themselves that emit the radio waves. The sparks act as a high-speed switch, that generates RF energy at high frequencies due to the rapid rise and fall time of the current that is flowing through them; these rapid transients are caused by the microsecond-scale changes in the resistance of the spark (breakdown of the air) from just a few ohms to infinity. The radio waves are emitted by the conductors that are connected to the spark, and by whatever conductors (such as your kite-supported aerial) are connected to _those_ conductors. Of course, the spark gap is a part of the circuit, and so contributes a tiny fraction of a percent to the total power of RF emitted by the circuit. But the spark, in itself, is not the point from which radio waves are emitted. You could substitute a rapidly modulated MOSFET for the spark gap, and get the same result. Of course, Marconi and Hertz didn't have anything like a MOSFET available to them 140 years ago.

26:05 Haha I did the exact same thing and I was petrified of how Dad would react when he got home. I even tried 'sweeping' the area again with the magnet to try and improve the situation.

Sir, Thank you for each of your series. I have taped many of them and have started a few young geeks to be on their way with your appealing and captivating presentations. It is great to see the remastered episode here. It looks so much better. Your programs are a valuable resource! The kind of television I miss these days.

I am really thrilled by these episodes. I could watch them over and over again. An English version of the "Sendung mit der Maus" (A popular kid's series in Germany) for adults but spiced up with English humor. Though I believe Tim is a pyromanica. He likes sparks, fire and explosions :)

I was gutted when the telly's went up in smoke at the end. I bet there were a few collectable sets there. Everyone chucked their tv's on the street because a tv advert lied and told everybody they wouldnt be able to watch the new digital dvb service with the old tv sets, and that they would have to buy a new flatscreen dvb tv. Well that was terrible, most people fell for it and chucked some expensive sets out. all they needed was a set top box to plug into the scart socket at the time. LIES LIES LIES !!!!!! Its hard to find them old classic sets now.

Ah, I remember it well. They made learning fun. At the time you didn't realise how much you actually were learning as, I guess, it was what I would call 'edutainment'. Can you imagine Health and Safety now, this program would never have been made and we would have missed out on this treasure. Thanks Tim and Rex [RIP].

Had never known of this series before. Splendid! Did skip over the regen/super regen stage, but as that didn't last that long and there were undoubtedly a multitude of various sub developments it seems a reasonable compromise in order to keep the length acceptable. This could have expanded to all day long. (Are these things covered in other episodes?) Very enjoyable and quite well presented. Glad this lives on here, would be tragic if it didn't! de Stu AI7AN
