Nate, I'm seriously worried about your safety. You're taking on responsibilities that you shouldn't have to take. Your name isn't on the deed to the house. You don't have a permit to do construction work on the house, which could get you fined or arrested. Nathan, I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with just getting the heater out. About the tap that was ruined on the end, don't throw it out. Grind the tip slowly away, not letting it get too hot. Just a little at a time. Once you get to the good portion, you can turn it into a bottom tap, where the cutting part will get good threads down to close to the bottom of a hole. I live in Elkhart county, and if you live in Marion, I will come help you work on the heater, if you need help.

A socket wrench with a bunch of extensions is all I can think. The head of the screw could be 1/4" or 5/16".

Nathan, I think your unit was probably made in Elkhart county. A long extension 1/4" drive with a bit on the end would probably work. The piece in the center of the flue looks like it was added later by the previous owner. I have many tools, and looked your name up and I think you live in Marion, Indiana.
