Great lecture. I was astounded that Hooker would go to such lengths to avoid responsibility for the defeat at Chancellorsville. Always thought that while he was personally brave and did the Army much good with his reforms after Fredericksburg, that he had some questionable traits, but didn't realize how much he lacked in integrity.

You did a good job of locating where you were standing in the first position, even including a map, but for the second location, nothing much to provide a location.

Bless the soldiers for their sacrifice to us. Very sad they never got a chance to live their lives. Brave soldiers who died on a cold, farm floor.

Great to see Pennsylvania has this wonderful flag center. Well done!

Union designating flags began in 1862 under George McClellan. This was a very complicated system that went from corps down to regiment. This was replaced by the Butterfield system in 1863 which was corps, division and brigade only and that system was modified later in the war but would be in essence the same.

The carrying of two flags by US units started with the Blue Book of Baron Von Steuben. This would change a couple times in the 19th Century before the Civil War through the several drill manuals from two to one and back to two flags - National colors and regimental colors.

The 1861 US flag regulations stated silver embroidered stars. Embroidery was too time consuming to do so they went with gold paint instead.

Samuel Brewer was the original flag maker for the Philadelphia Depot. He continued into the Civil War for a time but others from that city picked up afterwards by Horstmann Brothers, Evans and Hassall and William Schieble. Horstmann's were the largest militaria makers before, during and well after the Civil War into the 20th Century.

Ron Kirkwood's two books on the Spangler farm are important additions to the understanding of medical care during the Civil War. Both are well researched and well written!

For your consideration…. David Acheson died on the second day of battle. He was a Captain with the 140th PA Volunteers Company C . He was buried on the field and a large round stone was carved to mark his grave. His family reburied him here in the Washington Cemetery in Washington, PA.
