Since this video is taking off, I should say that Sir Gunnar declined to have this video posted on the Royal University of the Midrealm channel when I turned over this found footage to the RUM staff because he has changed his thinking on several points in this class in the years since. I hope that he might re-teach it with his new ideas on camera.

There are some awesome things here to digest and break apart! Thank-you! I did notice that a number of the people swinging at the pell tightened their hand on the "hard swing" and made their shot worse even though it was delivered with more power. That tightening of the hand was changing the angle of their shot throw and putting a lot of stress on their hands, wrists and elbows. -Sir Frug

Why do they use undecorated straight sticks, instead of larp halberds and spears that are shaped like the real weapons? Are rules against weapons with shapes? This looks a bit silly with straight sticks.

Darkmoon is very spear heavy, so House Gilchrest (green with golden crosses) which was shield heavy was put on Atlantia's left and charged straight into them. I know, because I am the one on the far left front of the advancing east.

it seems as if there are way less people in this compared to your videos from like 10 years ago, why do you think that is?
@barry14924 ай бұрын
Lots of reasons. There tends to be more competition for large events from within the SCA with continued growth in The Great Western War, Gulf Wars, War of the Phoenix, Great North Eastern War, Lillies, War of the Wings, etc. that pulls away from fighting at Pennsic. There's also more competition from related hobbies, like SCA fencing, HEMA, Larps, and steel fighting. But in addition to all of that, there's just a lot more opportunities for both people who are into the fantasy/role play side of the armored fighting, or the adventure sport side of it. The former competes with gaming stores, video games, home movies, VR, and even and endless supply of books, while the latter competes with the growth of rock climbing gyms, parkor gyms, crossfit, mountain biking, etc. etc. Those are my personal thoughts on the subject. Maybe that explains the decline since the 90s more than it does in the last 10 years, but regardless, I think there's just shifting trends.

While centering the wenches does not make for a very interesting video, it does reveal you as a man of fine tastes.

Re" darkmoon has been on cleanup crew From what I've heard, the EK left flank kept getting overrun, so Atlantia moved over to secure it with more numbers.
@Rancorous_Redwood5 ай бұрын
This was a fun battle setup. It had a lot of the fun of a bridge battle with way less injury. The thinner lines let more interesting tactical things happen. It is a shame that my clearest moment was getting spectacularly knocked off my feet on a cross-charge; but hey, I lived through it!

Re: Numbers There was force balancing taking place all week. It appears that the East started off bigger, then shifted some allies over before Monday. We were still bigger, so we shifted some more over. Then it seemed that the Mid got bigger. Etc.

is that butted or riveted mail?
@RenegadePaladin5 ай бұрын
Butted, as described at the beginning of the class. SCA's armor standard assume butted mail over a gambeson as the baseline by which one is supposed to accept blows (regardless of how you're actually armored), so this class is supposed to show what exactly that can really take.
@RobDegraves5 ай бұрын
@@RenegadePaladin That is despite the fact that nearly no one used butted chain mail historically.
@RenegadePaladin5 ай бұрын
@@RobDegraves This class is part of an effort to update the armor standards. The current ones were laid down in the late 60s when we had much less idea than we do now. I suggest going to watch the beginning of the first part of the class, where the Society Earl Marshal talks about this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5mmdH2Dpcp3rcU

@@alexc6324 The instructor was letting people decide what they wanted to use and everyone was picking the sword. The axe is in a later part because it took that long for someone to pick it.
@alexc63245 ай бұрын
so basically everyone carried a spear in those days because it could do the job, a few carried a sword or big Seax in battle because it was excellent against poor buggers who didnt have any metal armour. Im looking forward to part 2 and the single handed axe. Anyway thankyou for posting and I really like that you measured the strength of the blows beforehand. Good work fella.
