this wad is so unsettling. it doesn't need monsters to be scary. it doesn't need ambience to be distressing. it doesn't even need you. it's hostile, claustrophobic, willing to end you if you dare make one mistake... i love it. it absolutely deserves the hof.

When I suggested looping levels through the use of the original secret exit code, I did not expect it to be used to create something so piecemeal and nerve-wracking. That last level demands a precision of movement and patience lest the constant looping and multi-exit "must-be-tall-as-this-sign" tomfoolery finally get to the player. It's not perfect, of course--it all rides on 1,000HP barons and punching Imps, but hey, no Shotgun Guys around every fucking corner, right Dewzan? Painloop! Because slaughter combat puzzles suck. Beat it, bitch!

As the footage wore on, I realized the main malady is its linearity. Can you imagine a well-defined storage facility being this finicky with so many doors and hall-chamber-hall-chamber setups? Nightmare Mode is impossible, citing both minimal medicine and no sign of an early chaingun. And I didn't see one Zombieman. Did I miss them?

I think the detailing is done in a way that makes it feel very excessive, like adding detail for the sake of adding detail, and the map layout in general doesn't seem very inspired. I often compare maps like these to Alien Vendetta's "One Flew Over the Caco's Nest", because I'm personally not really a huge fan of either, and there's such a big contrast between OFOTCN and most other levels. OFOTCN imo is excessively detailed and lacks creativity in level layout, like this level. I'm going to coin a new term called "OFOTCN Syndrome" that this level certainly has, as well as sub-ep.wad.

I can. Rise of the Triad soundtrack? Check. Intricate lighting regardless of how simple the hallway looks? Check. Color-Coordinated lack of texture misalignment? Check. Blazing Rising Staircase that didn't exist until Doom II came out? Check. Set-Piece of door at bottom of stairwell guarded by rabble of Imps led by Baron? Check. Routine use of Thing placements (i.e. tons of tiki torches) as notable decor? Check, Check, and more Check. Point is, you were too bogged down by the minutiae of an editing program, one lacking the on-demand forecasting of what you were making that, all things considered, you couldn't create something this intricate back in 1994. Also, it's a E4M2, ergo Ultimate Doom ergo 1996. Unless someone made an earlier version and ported it here, only to put it on E4M2 for whatever reason, this ain't no '94 custom special.

Even though they're Hall-of-Shamers as you say, the first level presented here is adorably hilarious. Why couldn't Dewzan play this WAD? Chief issue: the texture work needs redoing to personalize each chamber for easier memorization. I don't think the play-by-play is really all that terrible--just that it needs half its length and three times the variety.

The first level really is quite the work of art. Good thing they weren't shotgunners. I personally wouldn't Hall of Shame this mapset, I mean sure it's tedious and monotone design, but at least there's still fun to be had mindlessly slaughtering zombies without any unfair design.

Scarily enough, the grotesque visual style and approach are downright captivating. It's not often you're reminded that suckitude is not without rubber-banding. Doesn't hurt that the play-by-play isn't terrible, too. I decided to download it.
