How bad does a 12volt kettle suck?

Less concerned about time and more concerned with State of Charge. The appeal of a 12v kettle is using the DC 12v port on your power bank and avoiding the efficiency loss of the AC inverter. It would be helpful to run the same test with 1/2 liter (Aka a large hot beverage) on a power bank from Jackery or Bluetti etc. Run the the first test as 12v DC at 100% state of charge and measure the capacity of the battery used. Then repeat from 100% state of charge using he AC inverter and see if the power loss from conversion to AC is made up for the shorter time requirement. So much power is lost to AC conversion so it is useful to find DC capable alternatives even if they are a little less convenient.

You are wrong. It takes 90Wh or 330kJ of energy to bring one litter to boil. So 300W @ 12V should heat up within 20 minutes. But with 90% efficiency required power increases to 200Wh and with lesser efficiency comes a point it is impossible. You need a thermos type water kettle to make it work perfectly.

I also had a 12v kettle in my van and had a similar problem that it took for ever to warm up the water. I found that the cigarette lighter power socket had a huge voltage drop and thus greatly reduced the power to the kettle. To overcome this problem I connect twin pair 6mm2 solar cable with a 50 Amp fuse directly on the battery and Anderson connectors on the kettle. It now boils in about 20 minutes. This was fine while traveling but still far too long while taking a break from driving and wanting another cupper. I have now dumped the kettle and put into the van 1.2KVA /230V inverter with a 100 A/H lithium battery that is charged from a DC to DC converter from the alternator and a 700W 230V kettle. It now takes about 5 minutes to boil the water and it also runs the toaster and the induction cooker on lower setting.

Buy a 12v coffee maker? Heats water aswell as much as needed. It never had to boil to get your drinks done. You only need to feel it with your hand and you will understand when it is right temp. best part, you do not need to wait for it to cool down as long. 50+degrees is enough to get tea or 3in1 coffee done. So what if it takes 30 minutes? Totally free energy... i think independence is worth it really!

This video just made my day! Just received my travel kettle, rushed to test it in the car, all excited, 40 mins later, car running, 350ml of water, and still tepid! What a load of rubbish they are. LOL, So glad you did this test, I will just use my camping gas cooker, maybe if I stick the kettle on, whilst travelling to the camp site, it might have boiled a few hours on !! Thanks for the video, it made me laugh with the irony of this daft kettle.

If you could make a kettle inside of a kettle, and then put it on the stove so that the gas goes up and through the space between the inner and outer shell, way more of the energy would be absorbed and it would be much more efficient.

I have a 12v rice cooker, 100w, takes about 15-20 minutes to boil a cup or two of water. if I have an inverter hooked up I can run a regular 120v kettle (600 or 1200w), which still isn't as fast as that Australian 2200w monster!

crap is kinda harsh, they're doing as well as they can with the limitation of the cigarette lighter plug. it would melt with more power, or blow the vehicle fuse. it will eventually boil but it certainly takes a while.

Fantastic short but informative vid. You just saved me some money on doing this experiment myself. I guess they could re design a 12v product simply as a low volume water heater that you have switched on whilst driving so you've got some hot water when you stop, but as a kettle for instant convenience? Not really. I would love to see more vids like this with different types of product, inverters and how this effects battery life and performance.

Pretty simple minded review, 12v kettles are great and you can halve the boiling time if you know what your doing. You wouldn’t have them in your home kitchen but if your camping or work from your car (tradesmen) they are great. If your looking for the stress free life of camping or traveling in a motor home but are to impatient to wait for your hot water probably best moving back to the city so people who really want the stress free life won’t have to listen to what you think of a product just because you can’t wait for a little hot water heated free from the sun.

I have to say, the science on this subject is funny. No info on the 12V output wattage, the 230V kettle was boiling for a while before it ticks off automatically. A bit silly to read the time when it ticks off. A whistle kettle would have been whistling for a while there… All in all a bad show. The point is clear, but the science pretty bad.

Would one of the Waeco Kettles be any better, they seem to have a much thicker cord on them so might be better? My portable gas hob boils much quicker than your fixed hob for the same amount of water in a similar kettle - and that's not on full flame.

It is not because of the voltage, but the wattage. You can buy a kettle with a high wattage if it is available. There are 12 volt cartridge heater/rods/coils that have above 1kW power. Many 12volt kettles have lower wattage because people are using them buy plugging them directly to one or a couple of solar panels. Unless you have a large solar system, you really want a low wattage kettle even though you need to spend a lot more time boiling your water. I believe your 12volt kettle is 300W. Most 120 volt home kettles are now 2kW. Therefore you need 8 times more to boil your water. In a power outage situation, if you don't not have a large electric generator, you can't get much power, so a low wattage kettle is actually better.

Yeah , 12v kettle is designed to be used on Low wattage output device, like Small solar system as you say and cars because most of cars plug wont allow much watts at output. I have a Small heater to put in a cup of tea, it take 5-10 minuts for Booking 250ml but i use literally no power , solar only.

What brand is it? My 500ml capacity 1000W UNOLD travel kettle takes 3 minutes on 230v and 6.5 minutes on 120V. Any 12V 300W should take 10 minutes to boil 500ml and your 750ml would take longer so it doesn't add up. You have crocodile clips as if it were connected to the "cigarette" socket it would blow the car fuse as they are only 8A to 10A output (120W max.). Connecting to a solar panel directly would be best, on a sunny day, as the higher volts of solar direct would boil faster.

@@AK-ho5xo agreed. My multi voltage 110/240v UNOLD 1000W 500ml takes 3 minutes on 230V and 6.5 minutes on 110V. No 300W kettle could beat that..
