Hello! Great video. Very informative about slow composting. I have a question. Do the worms eat everything in the slow compost method? For example, citrus fruits and peels, meat, tofu, processed foods, etc.
@BareMtnFarm40 минут бұрын
The worms in the slow compost method will eat some of those things, but they don't digest everything. Given enough time, the worms will get to most of it. Thanks for your question and watching.

I have a question do you put table scraps into you worm tower and your compost piles? I have a rule that I have done since I started gardening that my father taught me and I have never had any problems with furry friends in my compost piles over the my gardening life of 71 years. This rule is if it goes to the table it goes to the garbage pail not to my compost pile. For fats, cooking oils salad dressings, butters, margarine, or any dairy products etc. If it doesn't go to he table it can then it can go to my compost pile. I also use the same rule for my worm beds. I hope you don't mind my comment. P.S. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I also just subscribed. let use know how your worm tower preforms. Thank You.

Can I use lab serum by itself with just water not adding sugar. And if I can are there benefits to using lab serum by it self. I also was wondering if there is a benefit of using brown sugar over organic molasses. In your case I can see why you use the brown sugar so you can watch it super saturate. But I've read I can add a 1:1 ratio by weight being a little more on the sugar side. I'm also thinking about using sucanat any thoughts on the molasses or sucanat. And any recommendation dose for just lab and dose of lab and sugar solution. Thank you for a great video and great content I've watched a bunch of your video's.

Mostly I think it has to do with the type of steel that is used. These Austrian scythe blades are usually made from a type of steel that responds to the pounding by making the edge hardened. Think of it the same way as a blacksmith beating on a horseshoe into the shape makes it harder. However, you could always give it a try. Thanks for watching!

I found you from a flower podcast you did years ago with Jenny Love. It looks like you’ve switched over to vegetables. Do you still use and build low tunnels the same way as you did in 2017?
@BareMtnFarmАй бұрын
Yes, if we need to build a low tunnel we would use the same technique. In 2021 we retired from the flower farming business and but still have our high tunnels which we know use for growing food and flowers for our own consumption. So at this point we really haven't had a need to build in low tunnel but if we did we would definitely do it the same way.
@CupoTressАй бұрын
@ Thank you! Does that mean you now use only high tunnels and no low tunnels even inside the high tunnel? I’m glad you’re still growing and making videos. I wish you lived next door. I’m a beginning flower grower. I just want to find a mentor or course to teach me how to grow in sustainable ways.
@denisegaetz2916Ай бұрын
@@CupoTresstrue we're not using low tunnels the same way with way we would construct them to withstand weather. We do use a version of low tunnel over sensitive crops inside the high tunnel for frost protection.

Great short! Curious if it was activated biochar?
@BareMtnFarmАй бұрын
The biochar we use was not activated or charged with biology before we added it to the fertilizer making process. Since there's so much biologic activity going on while the fertilizer is being made we just put raw biochar into it. What comes out the back end if there's any char in the solution it's already got a lot of biology attached to it from the fertilization process. We had biocharge when we're making jlf because it's really cuts down on odor.

Have you used JMS on blueberries? I wonder if it would be helpful (or harmful or neutral) for them given that blueberries grow in such a different environment, with such different microbiology, than the leaf mold soil comes from.
@BareMtnFarmАй бұрын
We have used JMS in the spring before Bud break. It's had no negative impact on the plants. JMS is just a simple biologic to add to the soil and doesn't really have any impact negative impact on the plants that we have noticed. The plants seem to be thriving just fine.

Hi there from rainy England! I see you bought in bio char here - if homemade, does this need to be charged? Thanks!
@BareMtnFarmАй бұрын
No you don't need to charge the biochar if you're going to be adding it to a worm bin the worms have plenty of bacteria and good biology in their worm casting so it's simply is just a great attitude to add to the castings. However one thing it is is kind of important is it a big chunks need to be kind of smashed up the finer the material you add the better it works.

Okay, so you're creating an anaerobic environment in there that kills pathogens. What's the role of the aerobic microbes (the leaf mold and the biochar) you're adding, then? Won't that just die too?

I like the low cost and simplicity of the construction, but how durable would this be under redwood trees in California? The redwoods we have frequently drop branches up to 6 inches in diameter during winter storms which would cause great damage to the well head if not protected by a strong roof. Would this type of structure would hold up to this?
@BareMtnFarm3 ай бұрын
This would not work for your application. There is no internal steel or frame structure to give it any support. It is low cost and simple for our purposes of keeping the rain and snow off our pump. Thank you for your question and watching.

Do you use JLF and FAA together ?
@BareMtnFarm3 ай бұрын
No, I use a JLF made from purslane weeds typically to get a higher nitrogen JLF. We don't live close enough to the coast to get easy access to fish waste for making FAA so we try to use what we have here on the Farm.

If the bacteria need "space" and can't live in the liquid at the bottom of the bucket, how does the starter liquid survive?
@BareMtnFarm3 ай бұрын
The Lactobacillus bacteria (LAB) solution is kept refrigerated which slows its metabolism down to where it survives up to 6 months. When we apply the LAB to the food waste as we fill the Bokashi bucket we are cultivating LAB as the dominant bacteria which is pickling the food waste. During this process leachate and carbon dioxide are formed. If the leachate is allowed to saturate the bucket it will stop the LAB from being dominant and will allow other anaerobes to gain an upper hand. This disrupts the pickling process and causes putrefaction. Putrefaction in itself isn't bad and over the long term (think months) will also decompose the waste to a level its safe to use. Our goal is to use LAB to increase acidity to keep other anaerobes suppressed and quickly create a pickled food waste (roughly two weeks) that when the fermented bokashi is exposed to the aerobic bacteria in soil or a compost pile will decompose much faster than putrefaction or materials not treated via bokashi. The added benefit is this happens so much faster than either putrefaction or just burying food waste in the garden and doesn't attract animals.
