This song was sung by the fur traders traveling in the Apalachian mountains back in the early days of the 1800s. The Oneida Nation's Chief Shenadoah (1706-1816) featured in the song with the beautiful daughter. My 3rd grade teacher taught us this song way back in 1958.

I have a question. Have you ever reacted to the TNT Boys? If so, have you been able to analyze their young voices and their voices after puberty? I struggle with all the riffing they do because they are not hitting pitches like they did before puberty. I would love to know your thoughts.

Geoff is a master arranger and for this one he let out all the stops. Carol of the Bells as you've never heard it before. Just epic. His lowest in this is D1.

I agree with you about the “distorted brass” bass booster, being a bit too much. Slightly less so in the second chorus? But not many reactors have also picked up on it…. I’m grateful you managed to resist the temptation to watch this or any of the many, many reactions of this 😂 Even though I’m not so keen on that artistic choice there is no taking away from the overall completely epic arrangement that has got so many views in this competitive Christmas release scene. ❤

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who felt that the distortion sounded a bit too strong! 🤣

You guys are the first reactors I’ve seen who actually laughed at the part where the group all danced off camera “accidentally” and j. none waved them back over. It makes me happy to know that at least one other person actually noticed and laughed at that joke; I was starting to think I was the only one who found that funny!

Hi and sorry your Christmas wasn't the best. I struggle to listen to PTX they, in my opinion, are way too polished, produced and clean. I prefer to listen to independent artists who have the freedom to add their own ''spice'' and Geoff surely does with this version. 1 million views in a week and a half, I think he nailed it and outshone PTX in every way, just my opinion mind : )
@ZhenYaoYin9 күн бұрын
No worries, everyone's entitled to their opinion! While PTX will always be our first love, we both agree that VoicePlay and Geoff tend to be more ambitious with their arrangements. The interesting thing is that all of them have Ed Boyer as their mix engineer, so technically they all have the same person 'polishing' their audio! 😆

This was ‘Carol of the Bells’ as heard from up inside the Cathedral Belfry! And for me part of the feeling of those huge cathedral bells comes with that distortion you mentioned. As if one continues to hear the echoing ringing of the bells overlapping. That change in cadence in the beginning also helps it feel like the start of a group of bell ringers with the way getting one of those huge bells ringing would begin slowly.
@ZhenYaoYin9 күн бұрын
Ooh, that's an interesting observation... Never thought of it as "slow buildup for ringing bells"! 🤔

This is actually my favorite version of this. I'm old, cranky, and nothing irritates me more than hearing things done the same way I've already heard them for 70 years. Some folks crave the comfort of repetition: to me it's just massively boring. So that may well influence the way I hear this. I loved the surprise, and the "Geoff-ian" musicality of it. I thought it was gorgeous.
@ZhenYaoYin9 күн бұрын
Totally agree about repetition! Variety is the spice of life 😉

I always love Geoff's interactions with himself; this one seemed to have more than usual. Even though the tone was very dark, he smiled at himself more often. And when tenor Geoff was singing that highest line, the Geoff to his right, our left, closed his eyes and seemed enthralled. I have never seen him do that before. It was glorious. He planned to do something else (he won't say what it was), but "the boss", Kathy said he had to do this carol and make it epic. Mission accomplished! Great to have you back!!

Thanks for this reaction to Geoff's epic Christmas release. A little over two weeks after release this one exceeded one million KZbin views on Christmas Eve. I have run out of superlatives! I enjoy the unexpected ways that Geoff arranges music nearly as much as his vocals. Since Geoff adds all of the instrumentals himself using his keyboard and plug-ins it's really interesting. Judging by his album art, the Geoffquakes did some damage!

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I’ve missed your reactions. As you’re probably aware, VoicePlay released two songs in December. First was Zat You Santa Claus?, which was a lot of fun. Then later in December the released a new Warframe song, Party of Your Lifetime. Before those, they also released Stand By Me. Since it’s in vertical format many reactors skipped it, thinking it was a mini. But they only filmed that way because Mykal’s time was so limited and they had already spent a couple days setting up and filming Be Prepared. So I hope you’ll also react to that one and feel the love for this original member of 4The Love.

This is like a movie score in the background, isn't it? It's been called the "Die Hard of Christmas carols." The first time I heard it, I thought it sounded like it belonged in the background of a Christmas action movie, and felt a bit silly thinking that. Not just me, though, apparently. Welcome back and happy 2025!💜

Welcome back! Geoff created such a fascinating arrangement of this piece (and on the Patreon release, he was lamenting the repetitiveness of it, but he truly has a gift for enlivening repetitive songs, doesn't he?); I think he took Carol of the Bells from being one of my favorite carols to possibly my very favorite (but particularly his version). Although his cover of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen may give it some competition... But anyway, I'm always in awe of how he transforms familiar songs into something both new and yet respectfully resembling. It's such a fine line to walk, and he always does it masterfully. And those signature crunchy chord progressions he always throws in- delightful!

Even with the repetitiveness, Carol of the Bells is already one of my favourite Christmas songs, so I always love it when artists put their own spin on it! 😍

You were talking about his "wall of sound".... it seemed to me that he did not have any one voice obviously singing melody with harmony around it. He sounded as though every voice was equal, and maybe passing the melody from voice to voice, none of them holding it for very long. He did something similar when he did God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

It seems to be that they got inspiration from the BTS Butter Hotter version, where the members are doing sily things in the background. :) I love Voice Play's humor for the song!

Imagine was shot in a private residence which was available to rent as Geoff liked the white room so he could mimic Lennon's video. The grand piano is just a shell into which Geoff plugged his keyboard. Geoff does love to use discord in his arrangements, just as he likes to go from simple to complex as the song goes along.

Yeah! The "Hey y'all!" Geoff often does in his end credits, came to my mind, too when he said "..y'all's neighbourhood". 😄 And like to say, the narrator in the Original was Vincent Price. Here it is "Geoff Priceless".😄
