Great Interview. Rich from Solstice called the main guy at Deaf Forever (don't know If he meant Kühnemund or Mühlmann) an " old bolshevik" . I agree with him, the "Deaf Forever Forum" reminds me of my school class in East Germany in the 80's, where we learned how great communism is. I was one of the first customers of this magazine in 2014 at Party San Festival and i have stopped to buy it in 2017, because of all their extreme left wing views and their blatant hatred for Germany in general. As far as i'm concerned: Screw them.

That is a great conversation. I have been working with research in the the past 17 years (using metal music as my fuel while do research), but my research is focused on the life forms that we have here on Earth. My research is focused on biodiversity, how the different forms of life change in space and time. I do believe that this planet is not the only one with life forms. I also know that the key to understand better how life exist in the universe is by looking at all life forms that we have here. First we should fully understand how biodiversity is distributed in space and time. How it changes. Then when we have a full picture of all life forms around us here, we will understand better how other life forms could originate and exist in other planets/dimensions. I always prefer to do this conversation by being pragmatic. Our time here is extremely limited, we are nothing in comparison with the geological time scale. As species we are very young in comparison with mollusks (invertebrates, exist on earth since around 600 million years ago) and fish (around 450 million years ago). I wish bands and people in general could be more interested on learning about those topics. The most rare phenomenon in the universe maybe is life it self!!!

This stream hasn't started yet but when talking about libertarianism it's important to distinguish it's Left-wing flavour from the Right-wing flavour, as although they may agree on, say, freedom of speech, they're extremely different socio-economically. Further, or as as aside, freedom of speech *SHOULD* in theory be already accounted for under liberalism.

"The Mantle", "Ashes Against the Grain", and "Marrow of the Spirit" are perfect album. Agalloch was killer at MDF, minus kinda shit sound and mix.

Best Manowar was when they played metal and didn’t sing about it. The Ross the Boss era is/was untouchable. The rawness of those early albums made them sound so huge.

You have a great "deep-dive" into Venom here - the post-Possessed albums that most people have forgotten (or didn't even know about). I also have the Deadline demo thing on vinyl. Bits of it are almost unlistenable, but it's interesting. Some of the riffs appear on Prime Evil, Dancing in the Fire, even Mantas's Winds of Change album. Also, I definitely agree that Brian Johnson would win in a fight against Cronos!

I just want the albums I had on CD in the 90s on vinyl, it gives me joy having them rotating on display on the shelf, but I have given up on finding original pressings. I scored an original pressing of Schizoprenia for a bargain 10 years ago and found Seventh Son kind of cheap last year. Special edition colors for new releases was fun for a while but now that has kind of lost its charm imo since they release like 10 different colors now and usually get repressed with new colors after a few years.

The idea of a hotel asking you to take out the trash is crazy to me or check in at 5pm, I think in the states it's still check in around 12 or 2 still
@hkrug666
@hkrug666 Ай бұрын
I don't know about the rest of the states, but on the west coast, every hotel I stay in, check in is at 4pm and check out is at 11am. You can ask for early check in or late check out, but it's up to them. When they call my room at 11am telling me to check out, I just tell them I'm running late and will be out by noon. But at least there is no cut off time for check in. Once I showed up at my hotel in SF at midnight, and had to ring the buzzer to be let in, but they still checked me in.

The Mantle was a big one for me when it came out and it's the one I return to from Agalloch. As you mention in the interview, time and place was important- I was 19 or 20 and starting to dive more into the underground. There's no denying they tapped into something timeless with that album, and Tom an extent they did that across all of their albums. They area playing in Melbourne in a week or two and I'd like to hit it but I'm not sure if I'll be able to. I might have to see if I can swing it..... cool interview.

I must ask. What is the difference between tape trading and burning music in the early 2000s? Neither of it was bought but did bring more people to their shows.
@AlanAverillNemtheanga
@AlanAverillNemtheanga Ай бұрын
well because back in the 80s, early 90s you were mainly trading demos/rehearsals and live tapes, buying some as well but without the trading underground bands like Morbid Angel or Immolation would not have had the sales they did when the albums came out, because most of us bought the albums.....of course I had copies of some albums but I bought what I could, the difference between that and trading files I think is pretty clear, most file traders didn't buy physical copy. Apart from the fact that I took hours drawing logos on the cassettes, taking time with the presentation and writing letters, making a fanzine etc. You were still engaged with a physical object......and I think therefore not desensitised to the ultimately reductive and frankly disrespectful process of file trading, in terms of respecting art!!!
@mitchhutchens9573

I’m not going to lie. I did feel disrespectful to underground bands that I loved after I got to know them from burning an album. I remember looking for a Bethlehem and an early Ulver shirt for awhile because of this. They definitely deserved some of my money,

Even though it's the album a lot of "hipsters" caught on to the band and so I think a lot of older fans knee jerk against it, Ashes Against the Grain is the band's high water mark in my opinion. I first came across Sculptured and Agalloch via the old Unholy Metal chatroom on AOL back in the 90's, which I sent way too much time in trying to find new underground bands. One of the guys would pop in from time to time and post those real short, lossy sound files. It's been pretty wild over the years to see how big (in a relative sense) Agalloch became. Also their cover of Kneel to the Cross also got me into neofolk and other related/tangential shit like The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud, some of Boyd Rice's shit and so on.

@@Nizzon. The Mantle is a close second for me and when it was released I was really blown away by it. It was a huge step up from the first album and EP even though I really liked those. The last two albums I had trouble getting into for sure. Marrow of the Spirit is really hurt by the shit mixing and mastering job that was done to it. I couldn’t believe how bad it was and that nobody seemed to notice, it was just all praise - but it was a disappointment for sure after Ashes.

Idk, Timing is everything. The computer, KZbin, burning music. ( double edged sword) is what got me into Primordial and Agalloch in the early 2000s. Where I live you wouldn’t find their music at no music stores. I think that is why European bands like Rotting Christ can come to States and do better. The word is out and to listen to their stuff is a no risk just reward process.
@AlanAverillNemtheanga
@AlanAverillNemtheanga 2 ай бұрын
no risk just reward....interesting, can you expand on what you mean? just that someone can stream the albums easily and then find Rotting C playing somewhere in a 3 hour radius once a year and more easily become 'active' rather than 'passive'?

Must admit, kind of geeking right now. To the Nameless Dead is an art piece. Only hit play. No risk = I didnt have to risk 10 dollars on an album I don’t know anything about. Or a U.S. band that I love that didn’t thank the band in their album sleeve. I could listen to a song or two and if it caught my fancy I dig deeper. I think many people were like that. Especially, during the computer age. Rotting Christ for example: They came out with Genesis when I first heard them . I liked Quintessence and had to spend no money to know they were the sheooot. I go back to Thy Mighty Contract which is one my favorite Black Metal/ ish. albums of all time. It is a classic. Hearing just that record is enough to get me to one of their shows.

I'm 30 and what Jason says about The Mantle is definitely on the note for me, however, I sadly didn't discover Primordial until ~2017, and To The Nameless Dead is still my favorite album by y'all. There's just something truly special about the pacing of that album. Getting to see Agalloch in Denver post-reunion was a crazy experience. A ton of people were there from all over the place because we were convinced they would break up again immediately. The level of comradery in the pit was special. To your point on "peaking": If I were in your position and had created a body of work that truly resonates with people, even if that's a smaller group of people, I would be ecstatic. Finding something that some people truly love rather than many people like is, in my opinion, a much greater accomplishment. Cheers!
@AlanAverillNemtheanga
@AlanAverillNemtheanga 2 ай бұрын
of course....I don't think either of us are under any illusions of becoming any 'bigger' as bands and ultimately what you create should and does stand alone regardless but don' forget, that show you saw in Denver you experienced would not have happened if there had been no appetite among people to see it.....i.e based on some form of relative popularity.....so you kinda need both, plenty of amazing bands and musicians out there will never get the opportunity to travel and play other countries as they never broke through to finding an audience of even 50 people in a bar.....but hey, welcome to the party!!
