Mount the rotator at chest height at the base and just have a long shaft going up. Much easier to work on the rotator and you dont need the control cables going all the way up the mast.

Why are you climbing an aluminum tilt over tower? Kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it? If you would have positioned the tower so it tilted away, perpendicular, from the side of the house, you wouldn't need to climb it. All the rotor work, antenna, etc, should have been done on the ground then raise the tower up. Oh well, to each his own.
@StuntProgrammer7 ай бұрын

why not simply lean the tower over and to the antenna installation...some simple braces under the tower body to keep it off the ground and a boat wench to pull it back up would seem to me to be much easier way to go...not to mention to make it easier for maintenance in the future.

this is some neat stuff. good to know you're not one of those people that buy a SA without TG :) those knipex pliers are sweet, i've never seen those before. added to my christmas wishlist. would have bought them on the spot but couldn't justify the price when i already have so many different pliers and wrenches. for a moment i thought you couldn't split the line with the T at the beginning but then realized each frequency will only see one side of that. when deciding on whether it is a duplexer or diplexer, i'm confused if the criteria is the way it's used or the way it functions. from the way it's used i guess a diplexer requires both signals to go the same direction at least it seems that way from what i see online, and a duplexer is for separating rx and tx but the way it functions a diplexer uses filters and the 2 frequencies have to be different whereas a duplexer isolates the ports based on direction and rx/tx can be on the same frequency. i was trying to figure this out but now i'm even more confused lol.
@StuntProgrammer9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I love those Knipex. One set I bought myself and the other was a gift. A bit costly for sure, but very handy. A duplexer usually refers to a device like this for handling signals with relatively small bandwidth and relatively close spacing -- for example, two individual FM signals in the 2m amateur band. A diplexer usually refers to a device for handling relatively wide bandwidths (often an entire band or more) and relatively wide spacings -- for example, the entire 2m band and the entire 70cm band. Typical designs (in my limited experience) aren't directional. A duplexer is good for building a repeater while a diplexer might be good for attaching separate 2m and 70cm antennas to a dual-band radio. There are applications outside of amateur radio as well: I once used a pair of diplexers to send satellite television out from a distribution amp in an equipment room to a receiver in the lobby and FM broadcast band back from an antenna in the lobby to a tuner in the equipment room over the same run of coax -- the equipment room was steel on four sides so we didn't get good reception in there, but we wanted to listen to the radio.

The two small wings on the connector pin are remnants of when the pins were on a reel. I presume the machine that then clips them loose from the reel just bends the tabs up instead of trying to flush-cut them.

Another method: For those with low aptitude for CW,join the Navy and get assigned to Radioman "A" school. 4 hours a day of code practice with a Navy Chief Petty Officer leaning over your shoulder does wonders for your ability to concentrate. Reached 22 WPM while the rest of the class was doing 26 or more.Wait, that won't work. Navy did away with Radioman. Relearning code to copy it with a pencil instead of a typewriter to get a ham license, SuperMorse worked great, but is DOS program.

It came with the tower, which I bought from Universal Towers. I think it's specific to their tower sections, but you might check with them to see if they have something that would suit your application. However, I should mention that this isn't really what I would describe as a tilt-up tower since it doesn't have provisions for tilting it with an antenna installed.

I have made v-pole antenna. Using nooelec product LNA. Using RTL-SDR. Using SDRSharp software. To recive FM radio broadcasts to function properly, it's must use the LNA above. But after several weeks of trying to receive pictures of NOAA15, NOAA18, NOAA19, MetopB, MetopC, never got a good signal at the working frequency of the satellite. The reception location is in the middle of a field, an open area without obstructions (houses, trees). I have adjusted all parameter settings (frequency, bandwidth, etc.). Where do you think my mistake is?
@StuntProgrammer Жыл бұрын
Hey, Supri! During a satellite pass, do you see a signal in the RTL-SDR waterfall (but can't decode it well) or do you see no signal at all in the waterfall display?

Can you tell me how heavy of an antenna you plan putting on that 40' tower, and whether or not you two think that you would be able to walk it up likw shown in the video (w/o a winch system) ? Also, do you think it is possible to walk it "down" (by hand) w/o a winch with like 25-Lb hex beam antenna on it ?
@StuntProgrammer Жыл бұрын
The antenna I put up (an A3S) weights 27 pounds. I'm not sure about the mast and rotator. Personally, I would not have tried to walk it up with any weight on it. It was not trivial for two of us to walk it up empty. Consider that the tower acts as a third-class lever and that your mechanical dis-advantage /increases/ as you walk it up. As it reaches vertical, I think you'll be at something like an 8:1 disadvantage, so your 25 pound antenna will feel like 200 pounds. Plus the mast, rotator, and so on.
@stevejoos8953 Жыл бұрын
@@StuntProgrammer Ok, thank you for that (although, your sped-up video of you two walking it up *did* make it appear "trivial"). Would you be willing to explain to me what your final tower elevating solution was (or "is")? - Do you have some sort of winch system etc. ?
@StuntProgrammer Жыл бұрын
I put it up empty and have climbed it to work on it and install antennas. I used a tramline to get the big beam up to the top. The next couple of videos in the series show how, more or less.
@stevejoos8953 Жыл бұрын
@@StuntProgrammer I see. Thanks for that info. I had to hunt around for the video, but I did find it. It would be nice if the "next" video link would somehow pop up near the end of the previous video. I see people do that, but I myself don't know how to do it (but would love to learn how to do that). One last question(s): Why did you go with a tram-line option instead of a cable/winch option ? I thought that was the main selling point of these light aluminum towers - easier to winch up. As far as climbing, I couldn't seem to find out how much weight these towers could support as far as someone climbing them. I'm 220 Lbs, and I'm wondering if a #9-50 would even support my body weight at 50 feet. Are there any specs on that, or general guidelines on that? Thanks again!
@StuntProgrammer Жыл бұрын
I thought it would be interesting to learn to climb and do tower work. When I was looking at towers, I think I found that the crank-up and tilt-up options were more costly and more complex than a static tower. Given those factors, I decided to buy a static tower and climbing gear. If you're looking to adapt a static tower to be winched up, it's probably a good idea to ask the manufacturer how high up you need to winch from and what an appropriate method of spreading the load would be (or perform your own engineering calculations if you're comfortable with that). Likewise for determining the safe load when climbing -- it may be specified or the manufacturer may be able to give guidance. I suspect most tower designs focus on strength against overturning (and maybe twisting) and end up "pretty strong" in vertical loading as a side-effect. But it's worth checking!

Could you please tell me what adhesive you used to secure the click wheel ground tab onto the metal ipod frame? That part is driving me crazy.
@StuntProgrammer Жыл бұрын
I /think/ I re-used the adhesive that was on it after cleaning with alcohol. If not, I probably used a bit of 3M 300LSE adhesive. I don't imagine it's ideal for the application, but I think I would have had it handy.

@@StuntProgrammer Thanks for replying. I reused an OEM click wheel on a new iPod build and now it feels like the sensitivity has gone down or like it has a dead spot. I can no longer do fast scrolling. I used electrical tape on the frame and wonder if the grounding tab is causing this issue.

They're OEM. It looks to me like they're steel square-tube with some tabs. There's heavy-wall aluminum tubing where the bottom tower section attaches to them -- I imagine to spread the load over more of the thinner tower tubing.
