I just wanted to express my appreciation for the work that you've done in creating a very understandable perspective of the Writings. I am thoroughly enjoying your talks. Please don't stop. A religion that forbids sex outside of marriage, gay marriage (and views homosexuals as sick and in need of a cure akin to conversion therapy), views humanism and secularism as "forces of darkness", and bars women from membership in its ultimate ruling body, hardly seems like a "religion for the modern age".
@jwwiegley
@jwwiegley 2 жыл бұрын
It's a very fair point, and people should contemplate it before committing to a moral code. People have and always will desire greater liberty, greater freedom to make whatever choices they wish. You mention marriage, but why have marriage at all? It could be seen as an arbitrary and outmoded institution as well. So the question becomes: how much social structure and stricture is beneficial to our spiritual development, and how little is truly necessary? Who/what is the standard for drawing those lines? Is it a divine messenger, or the sensibilities of popular opinion? As far as I know, there is nothing in Bahá’í law that would permit enforcing these standards on those who do not accept them, so if you find them unacceptable, leave them. It's up to each person to determine if they might offer solutions to our problems.

@@jwwiegley I think my point was clear... a religion that claims to be "for the modern age" yet clings to archaic beliefs is somewhat problematical. The Baha'i faith teaches that homosexuality is an "affliction" that should be overcome, immoral and against nature. This is no way accords with modern scientific understanding, even though the faith also says science and religion must agree. It also claims men and women are equal, yet, unlike secular institutions in most (all?) modern countries, it forbids women access to the seat of ultimate power and authority within the religion. And the rather quaint, puritanical law of no sex before marriage contributes, I have little doubt, to the very high divorce rate among believers which, at least back when I was a Baha'i, was clearly far greater than the general population. If despite things like these, one wants to believe, and seek to get others to believe as well, that's all fine. But to pretend such beliefs lend themselves to the modern age is something else again.
@jwwiegley
@jwwiegley 2 жыл бұрын
@@c.a.t.732 This Faith is a remedy for the ills of the modern age; if not, what is the purpose? The world doesn’t need another system of beliefs. I hear your points and have heard them before: homosexuality, women serving on the Universal House of Justice, sexual restrictions, etc. Discussions on these topics are long and protracted, so it’s not anything I can address in a few KZbin comments. If you believe these particular issues invalidate the Faith and its approach, there is not much else to add to that.

@@jwwiegley Briefly, I'm not trying to "invalidate" anything... I was just pointing out that such doctrines hardly seem to qualify as "modern", but rather quite the opposite. Have a nice day.

@@c.a.t.732 My word choice definitely needs improvement; I didn't mean to sound accusatory, but was trying to be direct given the briefness of these comments. My apologies. A question that remains here is: What is "modern"? Progressive definitions of modern are much different from conservative ones. Modern science has yet to fully agree on the meaning and causes of sexuality. For example, in Scientific American I read recently: "Analysis of half a million people suggests genetics may have a limited contribution to sexual orientation." So is there an objective standard of truth by which to assess whether the Bahá’í Faith is progressive or regressive? How is that standard to be determined?

Mysticism? Silence. Bahá'u'lláh is speaking: In the following provisional translation of a passage from the Tablet of Unity, Bahá'u'lláh specifically refers to a number of Sufi orders as examples of this process: The Holy Law (Sharí`ah) of the Messenger of God may be likened to an ocean from which innumerable gulfs branch out. And this is the cause of the weakness of the Sharí`ah of God among the peoples. Until now no-one, not kings nor subjects nor the indigent have understood the reason for this, nor have they appreciated how to regain that power that has vanished and the learning that has fallen away. Thus one gulf is Shí`a, one gulf is Sunni, one Shaykhi, another Shah Ni`matulláhí, one Naqshbandi, another Malámatí, one Jalálí, another Rifá`í, and yet another Khárábátí. Thus are multiplied the innumerable pathways to hell. Thus do the stones weep and the Pen of the All-High laments. Seest thou what has befallen a Sharí`ah whose light illumined the world and whose fire, was the guide of its peoples. Well is it with those who ponder upon these matters and investigate then and are fair in their judgement. Thus did this difference in public rituals become the cause of the shaking of the foundations of the Cause of God (Bahá'u'lláh unpublished) Lawhi Ittihad in persian. Adiyyeh hazrat mahboob Written(revealed) for a Parsi of India Who came to Iran to try to abolish Shariat law of Jazyeh,religious islamic tax to pay inorder ti remain Zardoshti, here Bahá'u'lláh is telling him that Shariat is the light of the world. So Bahá'u'lláh is telling him (us) that he did wrong to abolish the Jazyeh. Firtunately for Zardishti of Iran HE SUCCEDED. KUDOS to Maneckji Limji Hataria (1813-1890) .

Alláh'u'Abhá, a very inspiring and thought provoking seminar, rich with the elixir of quotes and Divine scripture we are so blessed to hold. The collective and individual Spiritual development of man is the driving force of his material, social and economic progress. In a world so interconnected, it becomes imperative that the inequality which exists in our Spiritual development is addressed and given top priority, otherwise, and inevitably, this inequality of Spiritual development will cause material, social and economic inequality which will make some susceptible to becoming victims of racism, prejudice and abuse, thus inhibiting their Spiritual development further, and others perpetrators of racism, prejudice and abuse, thus halting their spiritual development and sending them into a downward spiral. So mankind needs to develop in unity or not at all, hence world unity being the primary goal of the Baha'i Faith, if we are to reach our potential, either spiritually or physically, socially, materially economically.... The contradiction you are so eloquently presenting is in my view the biggest clue we have to the purpose of our creation and the gift of free will. It is indeed impossible for "the other" to recognize the "One". The key to recognizing the "One" is therefore not to be the "other". What makes us the "other" is our free will, coupled with our cognative ability, physical form and animal instinct which are all necessary for our survival in this world, yet make us the "other". What all religions ask us to do is surrender that free will over to the will of God, at least partially, ie doing what religion asks us to do, even if we don't understand why, for the sake of God, or wanting to go to Heaven, or not wanting to go to Hell. So the real question about contradictions in religion is not can we or can we not know God, the question is why are we here if we are of God and why are we burdened with free will, physical form and instinct. The answer to this question we are told is Love, the reason for our creation. But we really don't know. Alláh'u'Abhá

Nice video! For reference, this operation can be done as well with Emacs built-in macros quite easily.
@jwwiegley
@jwwiegley 6 жыл бұрын
Not quite so easily, for me (I use macros constantly). In this case it takes quite a few keystrokes to setup in the incrementing register, which you have to reset if you insert out of step. Someone else suggested a regular expression with a Lisp replacement, which would work nicely here (though be even more typing), What I like most in this case is that it’s interactive, I can build up the scope of the change gradually, and then the change itself is extremely brief and easily checked. That said, macros and multiple-cursors can be combined! So I’m in no way suggesting that the one excludes the other. Together they are insanely powerful. Magnar’s own video on multiple-cursors shows this.
