The first documented potato caper was done by long-time Tulsa resident William “Wild Bill” Setley in 1897. Setley played for the Class-B Toronto Maple Leafs that season. The starting catcher for Toronto in 1898, Roger Bresnahan. Setley played seven years of minor league ball before becoming a minor league ump in the Texas League before retiring to Tulsa. Wild Bill Setley would make for a fun Nerd episode.

Smith was right about old Oiler Park in Tulsa. Tulsa did not go without baseball after the team moved to New Orleans. Tulsa resident and country music legend Roy Clark bought the Lafayette, LA team and moved them to Tulsa for the ‘77 season. During an exhibition game between the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros in April of 1977, a section of the bleachers of Oiler Park (renamed Driller Park) collapsed. Seventeen people were injured. Fortunately, no one was killed.

If I had a nickel for every time a team named the Browns moved to Baltimore and took on a bird as their nickname, I'd have two nickels. That isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

The 1914 Austin Senators of the Texas League also had a 31 game losing streak in 1914 covering the dates of June 14 through July 11.
@minorleaguenerd2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this information. Their losing streak was not mentioned in any of the research we did about losing streaks. Just now looking up newspaper articles it isn't fully clear how long it lasted, as again there's conflicting information both in articles and in the league standings. But it is clear, they had a long losing streak. Thanks for watching!
@scotthanzelka39122 ай бұрын
@@minorleaguenerd I checked Dallas,Galveston and San Antonio papers and they all agree that the streak lasted 31 games starting with game 2 of a doubleheader on June 14 and ending on July 12 with a win in game 1 of a doubleheader.

Would critics discuss the altitude playing a factor in all the hits? Like the Rockies today?
@minorleaguenerd2 ай бұрын
We didn't come across anything from that time during our research. Most of what we found came from just before or just after their move to New Orleans. But we're pretty sure it probably was discussed.

No problem at all. His name was Don MacLean. Baseball Reference doesn't list where he was from. He had a brief career in the minors. www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=maclea001don

I went to dozens of games at Bosse Field, the E-Sox first, then the Trips. The ballpark was so poorly lighted you could barely tell where the ball was going. But the first year the Brewers were there, the creator of this video doesn't include, they actually borrowed players like Collucio and Mitchell from other teams because the Milwaukee farm system was only a year old after the move from Seattle. The next year, they won the AA pennant. The E-Sox were in first place the year the parent White Sox were so terrible that they literally pulled all the E-Sox and sent them to Indy to replace the Indians who were called up to replace the terrible Sox team. You can't do that today. E-Sox went from 1st to 4th inside of 2 weeks. They played some notable teams, like Birmingham, which had Bando and Reggie Jackson. Lack of Sunday beer sales in Indiana hurt the franchise for the first couple of years until the state finally let them sell beer by the cup.

Damn shame the city let the Triplets leave. At minimum, the city should at least have a team in the Midwest League with South Bend, Ft Wayne and even Bowling Green. Very little interest in semi-pro Frontier League.

MLB will never agree to affiliated ball in Bosse Field. The upgrades would essentially doom the place and whatever charm it has would be forever lost.

Evansville did not know what we had. How do you not support a Triple-A club? We have a difficult time supporting all of our sports teams. Well, at least for the last couple decades. There was a time when UE Aces basketball and USI Eagles basketball were supported. It’s just sad that we don’t seem to appreciate what we have. The Tri-State needs to realize that we are not a big league metro area. We are an area built for minor league sports. We need to embrace that.

I have a St.Louis Browns cap like the bottom one in the middle.Had they moved to Los Angeles,I would have changed their name to Blue Sox.The AL would have had the Red Sox on the East Coast, White Sox in the Midwest and Blue Sox on the West Coast,all three colors of Old Glory.If some city such as San Jose, Sacramento or Salt Lake City ever get an AL franchise,I hope they consider that name.My parents and I drove by Mission Stadium when we went to HemisFair in 1968.
