Borgs serve kept improving, and by the time he won his first Wimbledon, his serve and Volly game improved every year, too ! Borg won 3 Channel slams 1978 1979 and 1980 winning The French Open and Wimbledon back to back within 2 weeks, which is a feat that will never be duplicated. Especially since the grass was so much quicker back then. This makes him the goat 🐐

This video missed the best part. Shortly after, when the umpire shortchanged Borg again unfairly, McEnroe, out of support lost a point deliberately by hitting the ball up into the stands. An epic moment because what McEnroe was saying was, ‘Of course I want to win, but there’s no glory for me in doing it unfairly.’. Then at the end neither shook the umpires hand, He was a total asshole who didnt like Borg, obvious to all.

Nice! However, this was the 1980 final, right? Not 1981 Because in 1981 Lendl won against Gerulaitis

Ah, nevermind. It was played IN ja uary 1981 but record books count it for 1980 as it was the season ending tournament for that season

The umpire isn't going to change his mind. Borg must have known the rules and that he was going to have points deducted if delayed the resumption of the match.

It is interesting reading the comments comparing champions of yesteryear to today's. Borg , McEnroe, Connors ,Laver etc had a winning mentality ,a desire to be the best .If they came along now that desire would be there and they would do whatever it takes in today's game to get to the top,it's something inbuilt in the top sport stars that separates them from the rest, just like Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in today's game .

I think nadal would have had a lot of trouble on clay against borg. There are no weaknesses in his game on clay especially the backhand which nadal loves to hit to
@Hmt20002 жыл бұрын
I think prime Borg would beat Nadal at RG if the conditions and rackets are like in the late 1970’s. If its modern rackets its a victory for Rafa.

@todeotodeo1403 жыл бұрын
Borg was playing Orantes's game. He would Micky mouse and then Orantes would come up with a big winner. You can't out Micky mouse and Micky mouser. You have to beat the guy or beat yourself as the Micky mouser will hit the ball back to the center of the court forcing you to hit big from side the side until you hit a winner or most likely hit it out or in the net if you are not totally on top of your game.

Great to see some pre FILA era footage of the Boy Borg. Fred Perry was asked after this match if Borg could ever win at Wimbledon to which he replied, 'Certainly'. He knew that Borg had been brought up playing on the fast Swedish indoor courts and had learned the proper footwork to anticipate and move properly around a court, so that combined with his natural speed he would be able to get away with not serving and volleying much. A very shrewd judge and prediction.
@Ruda-n4h4 жыл бұрын
Although Borg was essentially a clay court player he was brought up playing a lot on the fast Swedish indoor courts and had learned how to move properly and anticipate, which helped him on the grass at Wimbledon. People forget his speed and footwork were two of his biggest assets not just his passing shots and topspin.
@dansmith97243 жыл бұрын
He has a good volley on him too. He can serve volley better than 99% of modern players👍

Notice how close Borg is standing to the baseline when receiving serve compared to a few years on when he had a habit of standing way back.
