About the Panerai movements : at that point, the Valgranges or "7750 without the chrono" were quite new and they were a good way to increase diameter for time only and time + date watches. The movement is wider that most automatic movements, the small seconds is far enough from the center to fit in well with the proportion of a 40+mm watch, the movement is generally sturdy as it pretty much only has one bridge. You still see it in use today for these reasons. Tag re-labelled it and used it in some no-complication Carreras, Chopard used it in the time-only Mille Miglia.

Not sure I would consider any Rolex as a one, and done..As a matter of fact, I would never even consider a rolex, and yes Rolexes are definitely boring.

I have two pre-loved *gtdupe* that people left the stickers on, and when you remove them, the hardware looks different than the hardware right next to it that the sticker didn’t touch. It’s not because the other has scratches, the sticky stuff affected the finish.

What's a high horology movement in your opinion? H. Moser has a 3hz movement. It must be pretty bad since they don't even say that anywhere on their own website. They only get 72hrs out of a 3hz movement. GS and GO get 120hrs and 100hrs respectively out of 4hz movement. What's so good about their movement? It's a time only watch without extra complications and has a low beat movement and low power reserve compare to its peers.

I was also thinking a Hamilton (and staying well under $1000 for reasons best left unsaid), but as this is for a wedding, I was thinking something a bit dressier, like a Jazzmaster Viewmatic or maybe a Tissot Visodate. The Visodate skews a little dressier but has the better movement in it, where the Jazzmaster has the more attractive dial imo and is more versatile. He should also be sesitive to whether his groomsmen want the upkeep on an automatic. They may very well want the set it and forget it virtue of quartz (the quartz Visodate is also a better looking dial imo).
