I've recorded the sounds of predatory birds like falcons, hawks, eagles, and even the warning "chuk-chuk" sounds that seagull's use to warn other gulls of approaching dogs, children, etc. and have played these sounds back on a portable cassette right in front of feeding gulls and pigeons but they take no notice. You would think this would instinctively scare them but it doesn't! I can only assume that I would have to really blast these sounds at a much higher decibel level for them to have an effect, or perhaps gulls and pigeons will only react to the SIGHT AND SOUND of predatory birds circling overhead for them to fly away in fear. Possibly because predator bird species may not be as prevalent in cities as compared to outlying areas, gulls and pigeons haven't learned to fear them. Notice too that pigeons eventually catch on to the lack of danger presented by those stationary fake owls placed on building rooftops. Some cities deliberately place falcon nests on high buildings and bridges to hopefully reduce the populations of gulls and pigeons, but how effective is this, really? What DOES work is if I am feeding gulls and pigeons and I suddenly make a loud "pwissshhh"! sound. This always frightens them several yards away from me but their greediness soon overcomes their fear and they soon return to continue feeding unless of course I repeat the sound. Another trick I use is to point a closed umbrella at the flock and then suddenly open it, thereby enlarging its size. They'll retreat very quickly to this but stay back and watch to see what else I do, if anything. Also, if I see a large flock of pigeons on the ground, I'll simply raise my backpack up in the air suddenly and they'll take off in a panic. Gulls and pigeons are always on the lookout for small children and dogs who like to chase them. They fear cats as well when they make an appearance. If I am feeding squirrels, these birds will notice and try to grab what I am feeding the squirrels, but generally they keep away, allowing the squirrels to feed, probably because the squirrels will approach me much closer than most of the birds will dare to--save for the few birds brazen or greedy enough to grab and leap away. Clearly, the squirrels' relatively small size presents less of a threat to gulls and pigeons who tolerate their presence when feeding. The only time I saw someone actually CATCH a gull was when a guy was tossing scraps up into the air so that when the gulls flew overhead and greedily dipped down competing to try to snap up the food, the guy managed to quickly grab one by its legs and hold it until it pecked his hand, thereby forcing him to release it, so if you want to try this, wear gloves! Of course, release the bird afterwards, as you may be in violation of local laws.

So far, so good! The seagulls have been gone for well over an hour. They had been making a racket since the middle of the night and appeared in my dreams. Every so often I can hear one or two seagulls for a few seconds but they don't stick around.

I'm swooped at if I try to do gardening. They hate me even more since I 'stole' (aka took to the wildlife hospital) an injured chick. But I will try this when I'm gardening. It certainly seems to quiet them down when I'm in the house and they're getting noisy.

Only on second day but so far so good. We have about 300 gulls sh itting all over our docks and boats. I hung a plastic dead seagull outside and blasted this sound. They all came circling from every direction. I think they were ready to help out a gull in distress. I shut it off and 5 minutes later they were gone. I blasted it again and many reappeared but after that all is quiet. I think they think there is some kind of danger and dont want to hang around. Time will tell. Maybe have to automate it to blast every coupes hours? Ideas?

I can’t believe these birds are protected - they are not endangered, they’re a flaming nuisance. They raid bins and rubbish bags tossing it all over the place, crap everywhere and have absolutely no regard for peoples sleep patterns! Utter vermin and it should be permitted to cull them!
