I think wind might be plein air painters’ worst enemy (worse than rain, heat, cold, etc.?) Anyway, you both kept painting, and with good results. My favorite part of your painting was the bit of seasonal orange you added, and how you used that paint with water across the trees on the mountains to soften the images. Thanks for sharing your outdoor painting adventures.😊
@LauraGYoungАй бұрын
YES. Wind is the worst, by far. But we just learn to put up with it. It's the price we pay for living in paradise, I suppose. Heh. And thanks for the super kind words! It makes editing all those tedious blown-out sound levels worthwhile. :)

Look at that golden fall color! BTW, I did my first plein air event a couple of weeks ago. It was only three days (yay!), and the weather was lovely the entire time. I sold both of my watercolors at the sale afterward, including my quick paint entry. My acrylic from Day 1 came back home with me. I loved the whole thing! Thanks, as always, for your inspiration and patience when the weather tries to scour everything off of your easel!

Oh, Terri that's wonderful!! Congrats! So glad to hear it went well. Plein air events can be so much fun -- and selling one's work is the icing on the cake.🧁🎨🧁Colorado's had a warmer than average fall so far, but we can feel change is a' coming (especially in the mountains in the morning -- brrr.) Such a pleasing place to paint. Colorado has so many from which to choose. You painted this stream site so that it was even more stunning than in really is. I giggled when you got the blue blob of color from your paper towel…😅…no, I’ve never done that…never.😬It was masterful how you dealt with “fixing” it. Another absolutely wonderful painting. 😊 Do you enjoy painting with others as well as painting alone? I am a plein air painter and paintout with others each month. However, I really enjoy painting alone…but it’s much safer being with others. Happy painting.😊

The blue blob of doom! I wish I'd had the presence of mind to film it before frantically blotting it out. It was an impressive amount of blue, I must say. And yes, we are SUPER spoiled here for choice of places to paint. As to painting alone vs. with others -- I enjoy both, for different reasons. Alone = I get to pick the place and time, and can concentrate better. Group = I get feedback, friendship and the latest local art news. (And you are right -- safety in groups is best. I have several hair-raising stories...) Happy painting to you, too, L. :)

Hi! Thank you so much for this informational video! Does the Edgar Whitney's "Complete Guide to Watercolor Painting have a section about value like the watercolor basics book? Thank you!
@LauraGYoung2 ай бұрын
Hi there -- I'm fairly certain it briefly touches on it, but honestly I haven't read that one in a long time! If I remember correctly it's a classic mid-20th century style book which was very popular here in the States, as Whitney had tons of students who went on to become instructors, themselves. EDIT: You can get a good preview of it on Google Books to see if it suits you: tinyurl.com/5za9cy9n Best wishes, L

@@veaceslavanapislaru7310 Haha no worries! I would say that Watercolor Notebook has fewer pages on it, but discusses things that I haven't seen many other books cover such as how to reverse or rearrange values, or how values are affected by what pigments you use. Watercolor Basics, on the other hand, keeps it a little more simple yet has a whole chapter dedicated to step-by-step value exercises. Hope this helps. :)

Sorry, dear Moon! Believe it or not, this was MUCH darker before I adjusted it for the edit. (Apparently my Insta GO3 camera hates overcast days and deep shadows) As I mentioned in the video and in the community notes, this wasn't up to my usual standards of filming, but I felt I needed to include what footage I managed to get as I've had people at the gallery asking how I did this piece; so I thought I'd share as best I could. I'm enjoying this since I can't travel anymore, the kids bring home photos from Colorado, but it's not the same. Glad you're watching out around you for the furry neighbors. Even in Central Kansas. at our old farm, we had mountain lions! Someone had released a pet along the river near the farm & it regularly came through our land & often stole calves & sheep from the neighbors. In town I don't need to worry what's out there behind the bushes anymore. Coyotes came up to us during the day, but the bobcats & lions were more dawn & dusk visitors. My kids often saw & heard the lioness & her cubs. She came to visit one of their bonfires (I think she wanted hotdogs) but she scared the kids to death. After a couple of visits we gave her a wide berth, and I only ever saw her from afar, about 1/4 mile or so. I had two questions, first, in the last video I watched from May 2023, you mentioned the dryness, which we deal with here north of Wichita as well. Do you ever use a vaporizer or humidifier in your studio? I have to use one most of the time, due to lung issues, and I notice when it's running I have a harder time controlling the water on my paper. Our dryness is usually in the winter or late summer when the heat hits 100+. Second question, which of the Sapphire brushes do you recommend? Blick has them on clearance, sadly no rounds, but I have very few flats so I was thinking of stocking up on some flats and oval washes?
@LauraGYoung4 ай бұрын
Answers! :) 1) We have a whole-house humidifier that keeps things around a steady 40%. Outside it can very dramatically, especially as we have such wild temperature/weather swings. 2) Yeah, the flats are great. I'm sad they might not be available for much longer. I have them in a few sizes but mostly use the 3/4" and #12. No experience with Sapphire oval washes, but I imagine they could be useful for larger works. And wow, that's cool, that you have had all those encounters with a a safe outcome. Mountain lions and bobcats are abundant in the foothills here, and we've had more reports in recent years (probably 'cos we have a higher human population than ever). There's been two attacks not far from this area -- younger animals that weren't as experienced and therefore hungry -- so I'm mindful of their presence. That being said, I'm far more wary of moose! Thankfully, those (mostly) keep to themselves along the river corridor. However now that we've got two wildfires going on at once, it'll get interesting in the coming weeks as this tends to disrupt normal patterns....

I love how this turned out! Wow. Just lovely. I'm a newer subscriber, and love your plein air and love of nature that you share. Towards the end, did you add any white paint, or did you just pull color out to get the leaf veining and rose petal details? Thank you for sharing some of the names of the wildlife you are hearing too. The architecture and city paintings bring great joy too. I love all the variety! Paula
@LauraGYoung4 ай бұрын
Eeep, thanks so very much Paula! :) :) Nope, I didn't add any white paint, but lifted out some outer sections of the petals with a stiff scrubber brush, using masking tape to give a clean edge. As for the leaf veining, that was all done with "negative" painting. (I might do a video on this technique sometime, as it's super useful when working with transparent watercolor.) I've got a lot going on over the next couple of weeks, but hope to share more adventures soon. Bestest wishes, L.
