Nigel was not a great driver like Senna, Schumacher or Prost but he was faster than Piquet. The San Marino accident was in 87 and Nigel was faster in 86. I don't know what Dernie is talking about when he says Nelson was faster before the accident.
@robertwhitten2655 ай бұрын
@@willywonka-nw2pz Did you watch the races or just pulling Wiki stats. Mansell was always faster in 86. The only two races where Piquet was faster outright were Spa and Monza, two high speed tracks. Mansell won in Spa but Piquet was faster in the race. Monza Piquet was faster throughout but as it turned out Piquet was the only one with active suspension. Stop posting nonsense if you didn't watch the races in 86.
@robertwhitten2655 ай бұрын
@@willywonka-nw2pz That's the difference between people who actually followed F1 back than vs people who only see Wiki stats and few videos. There is a reason why when you see the greatest driver list, you see Senna on top even though the numbers don't show it. Senna was faster than Prost most of the time, Prost was faster than Lauda most of the time, Mansell was faster than Piquet most of the times, Hamilton was faster than Nico most of the times. And all these drivers lost the championships to the other driver in a same car. Doesn't matter what the numbers show, if you watched all the races, you'd know.

@@robertwhitten265 - Let me weigh in on this. I can’t speak accurately about pre-2000 F1, but I’m a hard-core fan since 2000. Regarding the Hamilton / Rosberg battles at Mercedes, Rosberg was never faster than Hamilton, and the only reason that he won the championship was because (for some unknown reason) Hamilton’s car’s reliability reached a level of absurd inconsistency. That is clearly the reason that Rosberg immediately retired upon winning the championship - he knew that it wasn’t justly earned.
@robertwhitten2655 ай бұрын
@@lrvracer3515 I wouldn't say "Never". Rosberg did out qualify Lewis in 2014 by a good margin and Nico did win races on pure pace on some races in 4 years together. But, by and large, Lewis was the faster driver including 2016. I don't think Nico quit because he felt the championship was unjustified; I think he felt that he couldn't beat Lewis again so it was just an easy way out.

@@robertwhitten265 If you saw races in 1986 , you would see that Piquet had engine failures in Spain and Spa while infront of Mansell. Also add in Mexico which should have been a win, but due to dodgy tyres became a disaster . Mansell had luck in Spa (spin) and Brands Hatch ( restart) . In 86 Monza Piquet did not have active suspension , That was a year later .

Williams put 2 cars at Reutemann disposal for the Las Vegas race in 1981. Chasis #12 and #17. Reutemann made the pole on the first qualifying session with the chasis #12, the one he wanted to use for the race. However during the practice on the following day, he crashed with Piquet and once repaired, the car never behave in the same way, and hence he had to switch to the chasis #17. He claimed that among others problems, this car had gear box issues. During the race he stated that he used to miss between three to four gears by lap. After the race and back to Didcot, the gear box was reviewed, and Reutemann's assertions were confirmed.

An interesting way of analysing who the better driver was/is, is by looking through a study by Dr. Andrew Bell at the University of Shefield. The way they went about it is probably the most coherent and interesting approach. Good reading to you folks: www.researchgate.net/publication/274080402_Formula_for_success_Multilevel_modelling_of_Formula_One_Driver_and_Constructor_performance_1950-2014
@fam.hunger5244 Жыл бұрын
To be honest - this study is crap in many ways i think. If you look at the best team ranking, there teams that were not really good, but no Ferrari Team of the 2000-2006 era? But BMW-Sauber 2006 on P8? Damon Hill, Marc Surer or Jenson Button among the Top 20, but no Niki Lauda in top 40! Come on, thats a joke!

Dernie's a twat!! If he;s so great, why hasn't he been involved in F1 for years??
@michaelastockbauer6725 жыл бұрын
Andrew Dalton he was involved in F1 for 35 years...thats longer than most of the engineers are...so your answear...a Little bit stupid, sorry. And Mansell was better than Piquet? I am not a fan of Mansell, also not of Piquet. But Piquet is a three times world Champion. He was far more sucessfull than Mansell. So the numbers confirm Dernies words...Mansell was strong physically, but he hadn't a lot of speed. Gerhard Berger says similar things about Mansell. So do guys of Ferrari, so i think, if one is not a Mansell Fanboy...
@michaelpashut16964 жыл бұрын
Danny you are clueless if you and your world of one think Mansell is better than Piquet
@paulconnelly40504 жыл бұрын
Nigel Mansell is the reason I started watching F1 but let’s be fair, Nigel is probably a more likeable guy and some of his performances are legendary but before Piquet had his accident and his eyesight went dodgy, he was better than Mansell. You don’t win three world championships by being worse than your team mate and I’m a big Nigel Mansell fan and didn’t particularly like Piquet because of what he said about Mansell and his wife.
@dannymason63844 жыл бұрын

To understand Reutemann you should read Spanish, there are a lot of books about him published in Argentina, he is not a supersticious, he suffered a bad gear box all around Las Vegas race and a change of tires at mid season which made say him that it was not his season. Besides it, most Argentinians are like him, with a sort of "sadness" or melancholy which is usual in ARgentina. Such "sad gaucho" knew he was a world champion who couldn't be a world champion by a lot of circunstances, and from here comes his despair, which you the British you haven't never understood.

@@user-io4sr7vg1v Reutemann had a wonderful life, he raced 10 years at f1, then after he became millionaire with his soya beans fields and later two times governor of Santa Fe and senator.

@@user-io4sr7vg1v he believed very much in himself, this is the reason why he fought year after year for the f1 championship for 10 years, Chris Amon didn't. I insist that you the English speaking people should read some of the books about Reutemann written in Spanish, you didn't know the real man.
Fascinating also to hear him talking about how to race in a speedway. Incredible.
