I had such a great time recording this album with Challenger, and your mix sounds incredible! Your attention to detail and those extra touches truly made a huge difference :)

Awesome video! Been a fan of Vulture since the first EP/Demo! I was barely processing my guitars in recordings and never got the results I wanted and this video really opened my eyes! Thank you! Also, how did you do the EQ match with the Dokken guitar tone? Did you find part of a song that didn’t have drums and bass playing or are there stems of that album out there somewhere I don’t know about? Haha
@hellforgestudio3 ай бұрын
You can find Tooth & Nail's isolated guitar tracks here on youtube - it's rather low quality, but it was enough to get in the ballpark. Then I had the guys play that main riff for me as well and so the matching could begin :)

Klasse, informativ und sympathisch rübergebracht. Kleiner Fehler: die normale Supraphonic LM402 ist ne Aluminium-Snare, keine Stahlsnare ;)

really cool to see you use ampsims to achieve a "nasty" retrosound by using the infinit tone sculpting options those plugins provide. I avoid ampsims because I feel a lot of the time they sound kind of generic and lack a lot of the characte and "fun" that real amps provide. but if you are going for a really specific sound, the ability to really zoom in and do tweaks seems really powerful.

That's exactly my take on this. While I do enjoy recording the real deal, I love, as you perfectly put it, the infinite options and the freedom I gain from being able to explore whatever a band could desire :-)

@@hellforgestudio how many hours did it take you to figure out all these eq over eq over eq and then again, more eq tricks until you felt that you have really nailed the sound the band was trying to achieve? (I do like the result, but it looks like the way that lead to it was super complicated)
@sergeipismeny5 ай бұрын
P.S. Also, if it wasn't a case when the guitar tone reference is someone famous who even has a signature amp, but someone you have no idea which gear he used, which ampsims would you choose to start experimenting with? Would you attempt to use Amplitube for an actual album, or would you consider one of Neural DSP's products a safer bet?
@hellforgestudio5 ай бұрын
It did take quite a while! We had a soundcheck session where we tried a few "real amps" before, couldn't get anything pleasing and then decided to go with a prepro-guitar sound during recording to not waste any further time. During mixing we tried several different setups just to return to the previous sound, re-doing everything... it was the third revision where we finally were satisfied with the guitar sound. Final mix was done within the presence of the band - because we still weren't satisfied with the guitars and had to do another soundcheck. Can't give you an exact number of hours, haha, but it was about a week worth of work span over the time of several weeks during the full production (starting during pre-production and finishing during mixing).

If I don't know where to start, I like to go with my gut feeling or with the band's for that matter. Often times someone in the band has some personal preference, so I like to start from there (if possible). Funny that you ask specifically about Amplitube as it is the single one amp sim suite I personally dislike, haha. I bet it works great, but I don't like it in particular. As you can see in this video I like to use different amp sims, preferably THU since it is so flexible and has a lot of options - plus I simply like the GUI. But I do love Neural DSP as well, there are so many great manufacturers, can't go wrong with either.

Thanks for the detailed videos! It was mentioned on metal blade's channel that the guitars were recorded with a plugin and the Marshall's weren't used. Which plugin was it?
@hellforgestudio6 ай бұрын
For the amplifier it was Overloud's TH-U featuring the Randall Lynchbox and for the cab we used the output section from Softube's SilverJub2555. I'm thinking about doing a rundown of the full setup in the future, since it's quite complicated (in my humble opinion at least).
@sergeipismeny6 ай бұрын
@@hellforgestudio Randall, out of all of them? That's unexpected, but definitely did the job. And yes, a full rundown would be cool! Danke once more!
@hellforgestudio6 ай бұрын
@@sergeipismeny I agree. But if I remember correctly the George Lynch signature model is designed after his original Plexi, so it at least resembles an old Marshall 🤭
