@@treyaintserious There’s nothing innovative about the Swing Lead. How you get to it…that’s where the innovation lies. I love how coaches say there’s nothing new left. Everything that can be done has already happened in 140 yrs of the game. It’s not the X&O drawings on the chalkboard or today, on the computer, but the concepts. What is the process in each of the players minds. The process that aligns them into a single play. How they get from there to here and back. Thats what it’s all about.

@ yup, a reinvention or repurposing of older concepts. Some concepts gain more popularity with certain stages of the football cycle, and it’s so beautiful to see. I remember going over a Dick LeBeau playbook from his time with the Bengals and his Thunder/Lighting (2 roll safety pressure) has picked back up with teams in this modern era as teams are looking to stop the run with pressure like keeping 2 deep. Warm ups (huh!?) and our bell corn running back who was one of the best in the conference this year before the end of the first quarter there was simply no way to recover. Don’t get too cocky though, we beat FSU in the very first Rose Bowl playoff game and then had our MVP from that game suspended before the cha pho shop game by the NCAA (for something that happened dirinfnthe season, they let I’m okay in the semi final but not the championship….make THAT make sense) and the. Lost to your Buckeyes! Eyes on the prize, they look unstoppable right. Ow, but so did we after taking our Florida State in 2015! @@MichaelTorrance-p8c you are right about “cocky”! That’s where I think the media and social media as such an effect. These kids are reading and hearing. Even the coaches. Remember when Ryan Day yelled about Lou Holtz comments. Ridiculous. The old great coaches of the past would be disgusted by all of this nonsense. And they would certainly preach focus and ignoring all the outer distractions. It’s just that it’s SOOO much now it’s very hard to ignore. So everyone was big time on the Oregon bandwagon. Even at the start of the yr. I said it in my CFB preview. I like Lanning. I like Will Stein better. The talent is there as well. But this isn’t their yr. Yet. For the buckeyes I think they are more veteran team and also they only are having the hype now. Just 2 weeks ago everyone wanted to fire Day. So I don’t think they are listening to the media and fans at all. But if they do they will get too cocky as well. And they could have a letdown but it seems that somehow this has all come together at the right time. Honestly, there are flaws in Days strategy as a HC, imo. That’s the truth. But he’s a smart guy. As I said in the vid - Nico MAY not be the primary - I'm not in the locker room to know 100% - but Stroud came off of him very quickly - I appreciate the comment - yes - spacing > lead swing - no doubt - but I still question that as a "check down / last resort" because Nico - if he really was the primary - had space ... plus, how is he "hot" with no blitz happening? btw - love all the unbalanced stuff happening - the unbalanced line was a big thing in the Single Wing Power days of last century - but the unbalanced spread is a whole other concept and been a long time coming ... air raid and other route ideas would do unbalanced route designs - but now we even see 5 eligibles on one side of the field at a time - cool shit!

In the end - the wording is for the team - to be on the same page - I'm studying the ideas behind it. The idea is that the "primary" doesn''t necessarily have to be the first read. For me, this first read is really secondary Only throw it if there's a massive window -- otherwise - whip around to the "pimary" which was the swing to the other side. The whole idea is the simplicity of the read and the Quick Game ideal.

A lot of Slowik's strategy is repetition and misdirection. He'll call a play one way in order to set up the same play, or one very similar, to go a different way later in a critical moment. A couple of the game-winning drives last season ended with plays like that. It ends up making the defenses look stupid, because taken in isolation, the plays look like blown coverages, but if you look over the course of the whole game, those defensive reads make sense in context, since they'll have seen that "same" play several times by then, only what would have worked those times doesn't this one. That might explain Stroud ignoring his primary read here, in order to possibly set it up for later. Stroud's passing and the Texans receivers' route running are precise enough thst just the slightest bit of slack-off or hesitation on the part of the defense-that thought of "he never throws it over here on this play"-can open up big gains.

Having played a bit of qb, it more about the positioning of the defender. The qb and receiver sees the defender to the outside, the play goes inside. Kurts totally right. We will tell eith an o line and te. Bottom line is that you csnt go diabolicle in crap conditions on the road. Don Correal never ran a west coast offense. Thats preficated on quck reads and 3 or 5 steps. Fouts was a 7 step drop qb with a slow release. He was old school and looked down field and worked his way back on his reads. Bill Walsh is the first to start the quick read qb west coast system
@PowerSpreadXO
@PowerSpreadXO Жыл бұрын
Sid Gillman started it. Check your history. They didn’t call it west coast. Neither did Walsh. The modern pro pass game predicated on drop steps and route design to match was started by Gillman 100%. Not debatable. Both Coryell and Walsh learned from him. (Al Davis as well) Paul Brown liked the older school Spread of Dutch Meyer (Rusty Russell) and one time supposedly gave Meyer’s book to Walsh and told him to learn something. They had an adversarial relationship. As for the reads deep to short or short to deep. Yes. You are correct. 👍 but I wouldn’t call Fouts release “slow”. His read took longer. But his actual release was quick. But again Gillman started all of this. And his mentor was Frances Schmidt. Father of detailed route and play designs with variety. He did it all from the Single Wing but with a ton of variety. Thus Gillmans Sets pre snap were condensed compared to the college spread. Thus the Pros use a lot of condensed sets and spread post snap.

Exactly. Breaking down this particular for an hour is a little silly imo. And I wouldn’t call McDaniel a “diabolical genius”, but I like what he’s starting to explore. My podcast (drew @powerspread) previews of Sundays divisional games talks some about this. I want to explore it more. But it’s not only about an Organization Historical Culture or even the Culture in this year. It’s what kind of Culture you have that day! Something to do with momentum for sure. But more. What’s that famous line? “Culture eats scheme for lunch!” McDaniel imo gets that. Yes, it ain’t Madden. I played at Bucknell back when Schiano was our captain. Also in western Pa Gateway HS. Played at three rivers in Pitt back in the day. So I have a little idea about the game being played on the field.

Spread is a little bit of a silly term that gained popularity, but Power Spread was something I started to use back in 2009 to describe the new schemes in CFootball in the 00s that were able to combine a strong run/power game with a spread pass game. It continues to evolve and combine with Pro and AR concepts and yes everyone does it now. The first real spread sets began in the 1920s with Rusty Russell and continued by his good friend Dutch Meyer in the 1930s at TCU when Sammy Baugh played. Thus the term "spread offense" that gained popularity in the 00s was silly...football has spread for some 80 yrs previously - it was the power w/ the spread exemplified at first by Rich Rod and his Read Option out of Shotgun (it was already experimented with before that - Ben Griffith - Manny Matsakis) that was a new way of packaging old elements of the game.

It's a very close version of walsh of style. He's creating routes horizontally on timing to create space on short passes AND when wrs catch their scheduled passes the other wise receivers are set in leverage in their blocks to give the receiver max yac. So a te might catch a 5 yard out but a wr running a 5 yard post with inside leverage on his cb can nail the ss or rolb on the tight end on a crack back block. It's why it's timed that way and the routes go horizontal. It's designed also to let the receivers hunt the defensive players Belichick uses more of a numbered do your job system which is more about single man mismatches. It's more of a concept based system as well. Mike martz ran the exact opposite kind of system.
@PowerSpreadXO
@PowerSpreadXO Жыл бұрын
Yes. The backgrounds are varied but the WC concept started by Sid Gillman was based on spacing after the snap and timing. Yes it sets up many things. Blocking after the catch included. Those are more schematic whereas my intention is the general concept of Power and Spread as it relates to space time team. And the aggressive variety and possible flexibility involved. If I get too detailed it becomes a coaches session. There’s actual coaches out there for that and honestly that’s very in depth for the casual understanding. I do want to provide more details. The question for me is which ones. The historic connections are something I’m thinking about because I’m a history buff. Even going back before Walter camp. Here’s some of that for what you mentioned Reid is a BYU guy first then he learned the Walsh stuff. Then studied the Spread/PS stuff. Walsh of course got his stuff from Gillman first but then Coryell as well and meshed into his own. Coryell was from Gillman and Dutch Meyer Spread concepts. Martz is Coryell+. Then of course. Belichick. Now remember Weis was his first OC at NE. Everyone talks about the Erhardt Perkins simple conceptual ideas of Power with some of that Gillman WC pass Spread. (Not necessarily wco of Walsh. There’s a difference) Weis also dabbled in the Run &Shoot. That was Tiger Ellison from DMeyer again and his own thoughts also using some Gillman. Mouse Davis turned it from a Power Spread to a Pass Spread. So Weiss was a mix. PLUS Bill and Josh went to Urban to learn some PS and Pass Spread. This all became a bit of where Josh headed in his ideas. Which end up morphing around the talent. Which was Brady. Which became EP stuff anyway. Pro Power + a Pro Spread with a little other Pass Spread ideas. Back to Reid. So a BYU guy. What’s that. Some Gillman and even earlier spread stuff from DMeyer (Lavelle Edwards goes way back. I have the connections. This reply is already too long!) but when Lavelle latched on to the Walsh stuff his main man late great Doug Scovil along with others put together a unique “college” version of the WCO of Walsh. Air raid is that mixed with R&S and the brain of mumme and leach and then power added first by Franklin then Holgorsen (PSAR). So Reid was already doing a type of WCO then fell under the pure WCO guys. But BYU guys tend to be more flexible and experimental. Also with a dual threat QB. Morphing to the talent. So the BYU Pro Spread is perfect for PS. SO Reid gets Alex smith (urban qb PS) and eventually denotes his buddy Childress to study “Spread”. The difference being. A spread pass like WC or WCO spreads and spaces post snap. Spread or power spread is spread pre snap and not necessarily post snap. So back to my yes. Yes. Reid is still very WCO in his passing. I call it PRO PS. Capital PRO cause heavy in those concepts. Pro PS a little less heavy. Some Air Raid thrown in. Maybe old Gillman or Coryell style too. Etc. but now for me Reid is FULL PRO PS. because his experimentation has gone above and beyond. Like the Catch Options by Kelce. All the misdirection. Play action. Motion. Etc. PRO. But the full gamut with PS thrown in. Especially with Mahomes.

@@PowerSpreadXO I think Reid being buddies with BB has caused him change how he views player groups where he goes "thicker". His philly offenses were usually tight end based with one big wr and one little. In KC from smith to mahommes he's going with Stout players without roles. Tyreek could play rb. Kelce could have played wr. I think Reid will get the point with mahommes where the play will be just deep center. They will just make up a complex route scheme during the play. It will be more of an algorithm response than an actual play. If cb 1 j deep left if cb deep right if ss blitz if fs middle is too long. Simply attack deep center for tight end. Beyond that Reid, shanny, bb, martz, Ernie Adams, are the most current inventors.

In my podcast and SB article at powerspread.net I actually said the chiefs may out rush the eagles. But also said hurts would get his rush yds. As for innovation. College is the key. Belichick was ahead of his time. Going to the college game. And Reid went back as well. They will experiment in college. Too scared in nfl. Money + talent. He wasn't really able to show his brilliance until he got Mahomes and the plethora of weapons they've had. The 2019 Chiefs film is chalk full of this as well when Reid started to introduce more condensed formations. With Watkins and Hill you can see it more with the speed element. In fact, the first game of that season verses Jacksonville you'll see allot of it.

Absolutely. Before 2019. Reid has been working on this for a decade. His roots are BYU driven. He was always experimenting. Wasn’t surprising that he would be the leader of synching power spread from college with the pro concepts. In a unified whole. Not the “fractured” multiple stuff happening before him

Do remember … for everyone here.. I’m coming at this from a power spread perspective. PS = space time team. I’m looking at that macro perspective. Galactic fire you are in line with what I’m looking at. And sharing. Let’s go further back. Before 2019. Before 1919. How about 1902. When these players would literally be bunched in only one little space on the field. Bashing heads. That was simply POWER. They had no larger perspective of anything more concerning the use of Space. But they were starting to delve into concepts of Time and Team. Yost Heisman Stagg. Warner. Some smart men. Zuppke later on. Reid carries their legacy

@PowerSpreadXO absolutely! I remember everybody kind of questioning why he was using so many 3 TE sets in 2016-2017 (in Chiefs Fandom anyways) when he was seemingly putting out no name TEs in Ross Travis and James O'Shaughnessy. Those sets and concepts from that season lead the ground work to his current offense today. Which is incredibly interesting to think about how far ahead he was in getting in front of Vic Fangios defensive scheme that's seemingly causing NFL scoring to be down this season across the board. I really appreciate your historic perspective of the game. I could talk about this stuff all day. 😂

@@TimothyBell90 me too. I’m going to put an intro vid up top for non subs and subs and I’ll have a link to my website and podcast. I honestly have the whole history linked from Camp thru to now with theories on the future. I want to create powerspread.com for the every day football (nfl college and the 2 spring leagues) and keep powerspread.net for the History of the game and maybe some social commentary as well as it’s had a bigger social impact than people may think. I may also start to work with another coach manny matsakis on the full history of how we got from there to here. He had a big impact on many of the coaches and their concepts that led to all this PS and PS Pro stuff. I can break it down from those old guys. To a guy in the 1920s. Then Gillman(Brown). Tiger Ellison. And the 3 off shoots of his Offense and how it eventually connected back to Gillman then the whole Option football thing. It’s finally all come together after 100yrs into this cohesive whole. With PS, Pro with a splash of Air Raid. College is still more daring but the nfl is detailing all of it!

Eagles had breakdowns in coverage all day. Just like Niners game. This time Mahomes burned them where a rusty JJ didn’t. open.spotify.com/episode/6uRKX5w4LtEOfLsA4F7ZdA?si=ITfrI_2ST4m0DnoO7o5Hig

Just to let everyone know -- My Post Below - My Final Pick - in a completely unpredictable game - Eagles Blowout.. Second Scenario - Chiefs amazing Comeback Win... But I could see anything happening - including Chiefs blowout... Also - this analysis of two great coaches Spags and Reid (the video before this one - how you make field play bigger than it is!) is only about the brilliance of these guys. and their way of seeing this great game -- nothing more or less - not playing favorites or predicting in these vids -- My Pick in the Post: powerspread.net/2023/02/12/super-bowl-xlvii-chiefs-vs-eagles/

Apologies to Trent McDuffie as I called him McIntyre accidentally throughout this Video. I have a few thousand names (many college teams) in my head at any one time. In my excitement to explain some of these great schemes I will mix up the names. McDuffie is the Chiefs 2022 #1 Draft Pick - a CB out of Washington U - he is the best out of a great crop of Rookie DBs and overall a great Draft for the Chiefs. McDuffie was a 4Star Recruit who more than lived up to his billing at Washington. He won playing time for the Chiefs to start the year, but got injured the first game. He came back mid-year, won the starting job, and continues to improve as you could see from some of his great play in so far in the Playoffs! Here's 2 links on his prospects and talent coming out of College this past year: www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Trent-McDuffie-DB-Washington chiefsfocus.com/2022/07/03/5-things-to-know-about-trent-mcduffie/
